California’s Ugly Anti-Semitism Spreads East to Vassar

Threatening, harassing, intimidating and assaulting Jews is now a venerable tradition on California’s public campuses, protected by taxpayer-funded administrators and enshrined by public indifference.

California is the lifestyle incubator of the nation. And now the trendy anti-Semitic thuggery that debuted at California’s public universities has metastasized across America, all the way to the elite halls of Vassar.

Before we discuss the fashionable pogrom that just took place on the Vassar campus where Jackie Kennedy once strolled in pearls, let’s look back at May 7, 2002. On that day, Professor Laurie Zoloth, Director of the Jewish Studies program at San Francisco State University, attended a “Peace in the Middle East” campus rally, organized by Hillel students, where they sang songs and prayed for peace in Israel. Wrote Professor Zoloth:

“As soon as the community supporters left, the 50 students who remained praying in a minyan for the traditional afternoon prayers, or chatting, or cleaning up after the rally, talking — were surrounded by a large, angry crowd of Palestinians and their supporters. But they were not calling for peace. They screamed at us to ‘go back to Russia’ and they screamed that they would kill us all, and other terrible things.

“As the counter demonstrators poured into the plaza, screaming at the Jews to ‘Get out or we will kill you’ and ‘Hitler did not finish the job,’ I turned to the police and to every administrator I could find and asked them to remove the counter demonstrators from the Plaza, to maintain the separation of 100 feet that we had been promised. The police told me that they had been told not to arrest anyone, and that if they did, “it would start a riot.” I told them that it already was a riot.”

Eventually, the terrified Jewish students gathered under the flag of Israel and were led by armed police guard back to the Hillel House. “This was neither free speech nor discourse, but raw, physical assault,” wrote Professor Zoloth, who noted with sadness, “Not one administrator came to stand with us.”

May 7, 2002 turned out to be a grand day for Jew-haters, because things only got better from there. Threatening, harassing, intimidating and assaulting Jews is now a venerable tradition on California’s public campuses, protected by taxpayer-funded administrators and enshrined by public indifference.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY

Let’s flash forward to San Francisco State University today. Mohammad Hammad, president of the General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS), has recently enjoyed organizing campus art projects that read “My heroes have always killed colonizers,” posing on social media sites with a knife that he claims “makes me want to stab an Israeli soldier,” and vowing to use his GUPS presidency “to radicalize half of our population and bring them back with me as fighters.”

Upon being informed of these threats by a Jewish group called AMCHA Initiative, SFSU President Leslie Wong took decisive action by yawning, shrugging and sticking his fingers in his ears. Mohammad Hammad is no longer at SFSU, but presumably he still has his weapons collection intact. But the radical student group that elected him president still has free reign.

AMCHA Initiative, led by the politely relentless Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, documents the anti-Semitic tsunami on University of California’s campuses. At UC Berkeley, a Jewish girl holding an “Israel Wants Peace” sign was ramrodded with a shopping cart by the head of Students for Justice in Palestine. At UC Irvine, eleven Muslim students disrupted the speech of the Israeli Ambassador with such ferocity they were convicted of disturbing the peace. And on and on and on.

The regal disinterest of UC’s Board of Regents has allowed the cancer to spread. If these characters can get away with it in California, they can pull it off in Michigan, Boston, and Brooklyn, too. As Caroline Glick explains, anti-Israel student activists at the University of Michigan recently hurled death threats at Jewish student council members and called them “dirty Jew” and “kike.” Michigan university administrators aggressively intervened — on behalf of the anti-Semites.

  1. Anti-Semistism is different from anti-Israel

California is becoming very anti-Israel and anti-Jewish. I remember listening to the Leno show and the Bill Mars show and when Israel was mentioned the live audience booed.

    It's the same thing

  8. Lani Lowell says:

Apartheid, while a convenient buzz word and sound bite for racists , is by definition, not practiced in Israel . What you , Alex, and your nasty little friends are all up in arms about is that Israel is the only indigenous Jewish state in the world, so by that definition, you are all anti Semites. Many of these ad hoc " hobby" groups are comprised of thankless immigrant kids on foreign scholarships who come here expressly to cause trouble, and the descendants of Nazis, the Islamic equivalent of Nazis( see grand Mufti in 1930 s with Hitler), and the Ku Klux Klan.

  9. In my day we attended college to learn. But in my day, we had professors who more interested in subject matter than projecting their own personal views on impressionable immature children. This entire academic war against Israel has no place in learning centers funded by taxpayers.

Jews are far too reticent to fight against this type of attack until it is a full blown war and that is a disservice to Jewish students who have to bear the burden. Elders, enter the battle; engage!

  10. every one of these "universities" should have a Jewish Defense League that has the ability to maim and disfigure the perpetrators. Jewish students should carry mace, pepper spray, acid and guns. if you imagine there is some other way to stop this you are being fantastical.

  11. Fred Hayward says:

While Islam tells its followers that they are the perfect religion and commands them to bring the whole world under Muslim rule, by force if necessary, Jews do not go around calling themselves the "pure race" (Israel is the most diverse country in the Middle East) and, by "chosen," they believe that they were chosen for extra responsibilities to make the world better, etc. Your double standard of hatred for Jews reveals good old fashioned anti-Semitism, nothing more.

  12. Larry Singleton says:

I just read part of it and this is the first thing that jumped up at me. The "Goldstone Report" was a sham. You're not seriously hyping this Kairos Document/Protocols of the Elders of Zion? Did you put the wrong link.

Israel is appalled and disappointed by the UN Goldstone Report published on 15 September 2009 by the UN Gaza Fact Finding Mission. The UN Goldstone Report effectively ignores Israel right of self defense, makes unsubstantiated claims about its intent and challenges Israel's democratic values and rule of law.

At the same time the UN Goldstone Report all but ignores the deliberate strategy of the internationally recognized terror group Hamas of operating within and behind the civilian population and turning densely populated areas into an arena of battle. By turning a blind eye to such tactics it effectively rewards them.

The UN Goldstone Report barely disguises its goal of instigating a political campaign against Israel, and in its recommendations seeks to involve the Security Council, the UN General Assembly the International Criminal Court, the Human Rights Council, and the entire international community in such a campaign.

Anyway, I suggest you get back to basics and read a simple book called "The Haj" by Leon Uris and follow it up with "Because They Hate" by Brigitte Gabriel.

And maybe you should study that "percentages" stuff when you cite things like "10% Arab" whatever by remembering what percent is jews surrounded by how many Arabs. And its the Arabs who are "making a mess" of things now.

  13. Gary Harper says:

Now you see the result of the socialization of America. These are our ever-so-tolerant liberals.

Vassar is a very strange place. There are those who look down their noses at you when you pull up on the main street in your pickup truck to visit their small but excellent art museum. A pickup truck is viewed as suspicious. But then, others are just the nicest and friendliest people that you could ever meet. Others are of such a self-proscribed social station that they will not deign to look at a commoner like you. I pride myself on not washing my truck whenever I go there, and on wearing worn clothing. Gives them something to feel good about themselves for, and separates the grain from the chaff. Those who still acknowledge my presence are of Hashem.

Liberalism and Socialism are diseases of the mind, the heart, and especially the spirit. Do not fall into that trap. Stay free.

Your enemies here are vocal. Unfortunately, they have positions of power and influence, and certainly have money. These schools are where the future politicians and policy makers are being molded. Good luck. Stay strong.

And know that we recognize that any side can commit an atrocity, that is nothing new. But most Americans do not support the Palestinian call for the annihilation of all Jews. Just those who will never go anywhere but the vacation spots of the world, due to their familial affiliations. What do they really know about hardship, sacrifice, faith, people, country? They know nothing at all.
