Rare Color Footage of the Liberation of Buchenwald and Dachau

Rare Color Footage of Liberation

See a longer version of the Buchenwald footage here: Norman Krasna’s Color Footage from Buchenwald.

This video shows the Liberation of the Buchenwald and Dachau Concentration Camps. Watch the German Townspeople who were ordered by the Americans to go to the camps and watch.

I find that the color enhances the reality of these images, doesn’t permit them to be overlooked. The black and white images we’ve all been saturated with, unfortunately, have all merged over time into one, continuous and incomprehensible fog. The color, especially when reflected from the Germans being forced to look at what they had done, makes it impossible to overlook the horror.

  5. I remember the pictures on the news reels at the movie theatre when the war ended. I was 12 yrs old (no Tv then.) Some of the German men were kicked in the gas chambers when they tried to refuse entering inside. I believe a local mayor and his and others of his government were among the first ones made to go inside.
It was terrible to see the dead and starving.

  6. I feel sorry for you.

Angela Bradley – you really don't understand do you?? We, the Jewish people are not taking what doesn't belong to us – it always has belonged to us – that little piece of land – out of all the rest of the territory – is OURS!!!! The arabs have rewritten history and laid claim to what was NEVER theirs and say that we have taken their land and think that since they scream the loudest, it must be so. Well, they are wrong – and so are you!!! Read your history!!

  10. It's too bad they slapped some sad music over this. I think the whole point is to show that it's Not a Spielberg movie.

  11. As hard as this is to watch, everyone–young and old–should see it and know that evil exists in this world. My wonderful father was a young U.S. soldier who was at Dachau when those poor people were finally freed. It is burned into his memory still at the age of 94. We must always be vigilant in defending freedom and protecting others, and give gratitude and honor to those who serve in our millitary and carry the heavy load for us.

Make no mistake, there were no tears shed by the German bastards who were to see what they had done. The handkerchiefs were being used to try to escape the stench of death.

There were no innocent Germans…..a nation of murderers. They knew exactly what was going on and couldn’t wait to get their hands on their Jewish neighbours possessions. They sold their friend out to the Nazis. If they had all stood up against the persecution of their neighbours and friends it could not have happened. The fact is that they were jealous of the Jews who never harmed them.

  22. Simon Pinto says:

    Not forgive nor forget

  23. Belinda Lester Goldman says:

Eric Peloquin The teachings of Christ? Where does that leave Jews then given Jews don't believe in Christ? There is no need to believe in Christ or, indeed, any supreme being to have an inherent sense of morality. When talking about right and wrong, the previous writer was talking about having a moral code which human beings can live by without any reference to a supreme being.

  24. Judith Yacov says:

Disturbing and very sobering especially because these things can, are and will happen again.

  25. Eric Peloquin, I never read the bible and I know the diferance between right and wrong. There are tribes in the rain forests of south america who never saw a bible and they know not to lie or kill. Nobody needs your bible or your Christ to be good at anything.A fictional character and a work of fiction are not now nor will they ever be the things that make people good. Six million on my people were murdered by you wonderful christians. I guess Jesus guided them huh?

  26. Sean Lang says:

Thank you for posting this – the colour does indeed bring home the shock that these sights must have caused in those who saw them. People on this forum, as elsewhere, have said that seeing these pictures should make us vow 'never again'. But sadly that is a vain hope, as the people of Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and so many other places can testify. Maybe it doesn't always help to talk of Evil – for who identifies instinctively with Evil? The evil comes through two much more recognisable forces – hatred and fear. It's when these are whipped up in ordinary people against an identifiable group that those ordinary people commit extra-ordinary evil acts. And all too often they only come to their senses when it is too late. So let us look at the images and draw lessons not for other people, for there is little in the end that we can do to change them, but for ourselves. We must abandon hatred and conquer fear and see others not as 'Others' but as people, like ourselves.

  27. Joe Kelly says:

Are you talking about Christian God or Jewish God here?

  28. seeing these awful images in colour makes it even more shocking than the horrifying black and white images …never ever again!

This is about as heartbreaking as it gets. But you need to watch it.

  31. Eric Peloquin says:

Alberto Perez I assume that you are an atheist because the rhetoric you are spouting is point by point from the atheist playbook. Yes, i am sure that you could name multitudes of people who have done wrong and yet go to church on Sundays. There are a lot of fat people at the local gym. That doesn't mean the gym is wrong. Such people are not practicing the truths of the bible. Second, I DID know your reference to the OT. That is why I said that you, like many others, are illustrating your ignorance of the bible and of tribes that the ancient Israelites had to deal with in their land. Have you ever read the bible? Have you ever studied the ancient cultures? I dare say not. Just like Dawkins and Hitchens, you pick out a couple of bloody battles and make wide, sweeping statements about the bible that are quite simply inaccurate. Before you cast such aspersions you would do well to know that of which you speak.
You made my point for me when you said " they preach but they don't practice, like most Christians". Any Christian who commits crimes against humanity will face judgment and is not acting in accordance with the commands of Christ. Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, they ALL acted in accordance with the tenets of atheism. How interesting that ALL of them specifically targeted Christians and outlawed religion in general and Christianity in particular.

  33. Such terrible actions done by humans against fellow humans. That sweet boy at the end; with the tears….

  34. Eric Peloquin says:

Raphael Zigelnik Thank you for making my point quite effectively for me. I never said that people need to know Christ or read the bible to be "good". The bible teaches us that the understanding of what is right and wrong has been written on the hearts of all men. We all have the innate sense of right and wrong. Why do two year old children act guilty when they tell a lie? Why do untouched tribal people of whom you speak have a similar sense of morality as us? Because we all have the law of God written upon our hearts. Our problems arise when we rebel against what we know is right, and we always do.

As for Jesus being a "fictional character" you are quite simply wrong. That a man named Jesus who was from Nazareth and claimed to be the Messiah and was executed under Pontius Pilate is an irrefutable fact of history. To suggest otherwise is completely without merit. Leave alone the bible, Roman history substantiates this fact. The Roman historian Tacitus in his history "Annals" when recording the events surrounding the Great Fire of Rome under Nero said…"Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judæa, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome…". The "extreme penalty" was, of course, crucifixion because it was so horrible that the Romans would not even allow Roman citizens to be crucified.

Christians were not, in any way, responsible for the Holocaust. Hitler was, and as I said earlier, he was following the teachings of his mentor, Nietzsche the father of modern atheism. The crimes of many Christians during the Holocaust were to do nothing, to remain silent. To make that point, Rev. Martin Niemöller who spent seven years in a concentration camp (as did about one millions Christians) said…
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Catholic
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.

However, there have been great evils perpetrated against the Jews at other times in history by those who claimed to be Christians. Please do not identify me with them or with Christians in general. I cannot underscore this point enough. People who did such things were acting in complete rebellion against the teachings of Christ and it sickens me. Jesus Christ was a Jew as were all of his disciples. The Christians Church was exclusively Jewish for about the first ten years following Jesus' death and resurrection. In fact at first the Apostles did not even believe that Jesus' teachings were for the Gentiles but for the Jews alone! Jesus is the Jewish Messiah! We Gentiles have simply been grafted in.

  35. Steve Sokol says:

Too evil to understand. Never a more peace loving people that has brought medicine, technology, humanitarianism to a world. NEVER started a conflict. G_d bless them all. And let us learn from their horrors as they would want us to.

  36. Ricky Height says:

Really! How much of the New Testament-Revelations, John, etc. demonizes the Jews?? If you can only get to G-d thru Christ, I guess that make us all members of the Anti Christ Club. I find, I am afraid much of the Gospels professes a silent call to take action against us, which millions upon millions of Christians have accomplished during the previous two thousand years.

  37. John Topolosky says:

Meanwhile, here in the USA, Obama's Administration has built somewhere between 300 and 600 Concentration Camps (complete with barbed wire) all over this country. And if you build them (at great expense) then of course, YOU INTEND TO USE THEM. If you do NOT believe me, then simply go to You Tube to hear his explanation for them at a News (Press) conference: Simply type into the search tray: "Obama explains the FEMA Camps"

  38. Juana Leilani Madrazo says:

    That was a good order,
To round the Germans and make them go through the camp

  39. Imad Sinno says:

what a terrible thing a human can to others,I hope one day israel and the palestinians will have peace for the future Generations sakes

  40. Eric Peloquin says:

Belinda Lester Goldman Let me clarify. I am not saying that you must believe in Jesus Christ (Yeshua ha Maschiach) in order to know right from wrong. Not at all. The very point that people have an innate sense of right and wrong comes from God. As I said to Raphael…I never said that people need to know Christ or read the bible to be "good". It is because we know right from wrong and yet we often choose to do wrong that we are in need of a Savior.

I will be the first to say that there are a lot of bad Christians out there. A lot of people who do things wrong or do wrong things under the banner of Christianity. I hate that this is true, but it is. However, the fact that there are bad Christians doesn't negate the truths of Christianity. As I said in another post, there are a lot of fat people at the local gym but that doesn't negate the value of that gym. There are a hypocrites in Christianity but that doesn't negate the truths thereof.

You mention that Jews don't believe in Jesus. I am not sure if you realize this, but Jesus was in fact a Jew as were all of his early disciples, the apostles and all Christians were Jews for the first tens years or so following Jesus' death and resurrection. Jesus celebrated Sukkot and Chaunkah. The "last supper" was Jesus' celebration of Pesach with his disciples. One of the great crimes of history is how Gentile influences in the third and fourth centuries (especially Catholicism) diluted and eventually eradicated all the Jewishness of Christianity. In fact, I am the head of a ministry that is dedicated to teaching Christian people about the Jewish roots of Christianity.

  41. Eric Peloquin says:

    Amen and amein!

  42. Eric Peloquin You really need to read Alice Miller's For Your Own Good to understand how the Nazi sense of good and evil was utterly buried and how ripe they were for Hitler given the circumstances of their era. People do know what good is. Even St. Paul says in Romans 2 that the Gentiles can do "by nature" what the law is in essence about–did you not read that? As for Jesus, there are many good statements by him; but did you not read where he damns people he disagrees with, such as Matthew 23 and many other places? And look at the book of Revelation–is that a God of love? Or does it justify the kinds of horrors that happened at Dachau?

  43. Eric Peloquin says:

There is an excellent book entitled "The Liberator" which is about General Felix Sparks who led his unit from the shores of Sicily to the gates of Dachau. His narrative of what they saw and what happened at that place are chilling. This book is an unvarnished telling of the history of a great leader. A worthy read.

  44. Stephen Berson says:

Unfortunately religious brainwashing propaganda is alive and well in the world which segregates rather than integrating people and their respect for life. There is also the quest for power which results in the disrespect for life in mass.

  45. I agree with alberto….. Athiests have committed more murder, and genecide, than any religion to date! May we never forget, or turn aside. It is our sacred duty if not Our G-d given command to end these attrocities…. May we never forget!

  46. Eric Peloquin says:

I am very saddened by your post here, especially because you say you are a Jew. Eretz Yisrael (the land of Israel) is the ancestral homeland for all Jews. What happened in 1948 was the RE-formation of the Jewish State, not the formation of it. The Palestinians are trying to take land that doesn't belong to them and giving up land for peace is an ill advised plan as demonstrated by the 2003 deal which gave up the Gaza Strip. All that was accomplished in that deal was the that the terrorists now are able to hit more population centers such as Sderot, Ashkelon and beyond. It seems you have been influenced by the antisemitism that is rife throughout the UN and the international press. Any and every move that Israel makes to defend its self is scrutinized and criticized yet we rarely hear if the virtually daily attacks on Israel from Gaza. What should we expect? The majority of the Palestinian parliament is Hamas which is an internationally recognized terrorist organization!

  47. Eric Peloquin says:

That is truly amazing. Do you happen to know what unit your father was with? I have read about the liberation of Dachau and it is a stirring yet chilling history. Was he under (then) Lt.Col.Felix Sparks? He was in command of 3rd Battalion of the 157th Infantry Regiment of the 45th Infantry Division.
Whatever unit your father was with, I can only imagine how that experience as such a young age shaped him as a person.

  48. Alexa Raine says:

Mans inhumanity reached the lowest indescribable depths. The breadth of this atrocity on living human beings defies belief. And yet here is the proof that IT HAPPENED.

  49. Alberto Perez the Nazis and SS were pure occultists. And many were Atheists like the Communists that killed 3 times as the Nazis did. 6 million Jews were killed. And 7 million non Jews were killed as well and many were Christian.. Most of the victims that you said were killed in the name of God were Christians in the first place..

  50. Eric Peloquin whether Christ existed or not one fact is true and documented from the beginning of christianity. You christians are murderers and the jewish people have been your victims and scapegoats for the last two thousand years. That is a fact. As for Jesus look up the myth of Horus son of Osiris. Jesus was an updated story of that myth. He never existed.

  51. Jasun Mark says:

Matt Jackson please don't suggest that your invented God sets a standard for good. That's not only false.. it's dangerous. When we allow a made up God to tell us what is and isn't right… we give ourselves a reason and excuse for this to happen again. And it's HAS happened again. In the name of "god."

  52. how do we save America from obama
