Why I Support Steve Bannon and Breitbart

Sunday, November 27th, 2016

I don’t know Steve Bannon. Even though my byline has appeared in Breitbart, I never met the man or even knew his name until he joined the Trump campaign. What I do know is that he is the target of a political ideology in desperation mode, which has been excusing antisemitism for over a decade and euphemistically referring to the murder of Jews in Israel as “resistance.”

Not knowing what’s in Bannon’s heart, I couldn’t say if he spends his evenings at Ku Klux Klan meetings or gearing up for a post-political career in hip hop. The fact is that he headed arguably the most pro-Israel media organization in the world, and oversaw an operation that went out of its way to expose and attack antisemitism at every turn.

But power and politics can bring out the worst in people, especially after a devastating election loss.

The progressive “news” website Salon has been a relentless critic of Israel and defender of the antisemitic Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. But apparently, they’ve found religion and are now the Jews’ best friend – defending the People of the Book from the evil Mr. Bannon and his bigotry.

Last week, Salon published a piece by Matthew Rozsa titled, “Steve Bannon runs an antisemitic website, is a misogynist and will be one of Donald Trump’s senior advisers.” The website in question is Breitbart – the news organization I just described as being “arguably the most pro-Israel media organization in the world.”

Rozsa never cites any antisemitic activity in which he accuses Bannon of participating or advocating. The best he can come up with is a producer at the Montel Williams show who wrote on Twitter, “Sources: @AIPAC is privately apoplectic about Steve Bannon appointment.” If they want to play that game, I can name a dozen supporters of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee who will tell you that Barack Obama believes Zionists control the world. In other words, it’s all crap.

The “credible evidence” is an accusation of antisemitism from court testimony by Bannon’s ex-wife. I’ll let you decide if ex-spouses ever seek revenge in court.

Most comical is the blatant statement, “Bannon is also a notorious antisemite” which links to, “A White Nationalist Who Hates Jews Will Be Trump’s Right-Hand Man In The White House,” published in the far-left “watchdog” Media Matters.

To put this in context, Media Matters combating antisemitism is comparable to the Nation of Islam combating antisemitism.

Mazel Tov, Mr. Bannon! The people accusing you of hating Jews are the same people who blame the Jewish state every chance they get. This meshuggah madness should surprise no one, since much of this smear campaign against you is funded by Israel’s greatest enemy (next to the mullahs in Iran): multi-billionaire George Soros.

Mr. Soros is not hiding the fact that he will stop at nothing to sabotage President-elect Trump’s agenda. The man who told 60 Minutes that roaming the streets of Budapest with his faux godfather to confiscate the property of his fellow Jews for the Nazis was the most exhilarating time of his life, is meeting with fellow rich liberals to “resist Trump, ‘take back power’” as reported by Politico. Add the fact that efforts to discredit Bannon are spearheaded by media outlets that receive funding directly from Soros or one of his foundations, Media Matters and Salon included.

J Street, Soros’ favorite anti-Zionist, Zionist group, is working to put a Jewish face on the campaign to malign Bannon. Considering that J Street raises money for Israel’s enemies in Congress and the Senate, recently endorsing anti-Israel voices such as Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) to name a few, it’s clear that Jews are being used as a political tool to paint Trump and his administration as a band of bigots.

Morton Klein, President of the Zionist Organization of America, may have said it best when he asked, “Would Trump’s extraordinary pro-Israel advisers, such as Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Pence, Mike Huckabee, Sheldon Adelson and Orthodox Jews Jared Kushner, David Friedman and Jason Greenblatt ever allow an antisemite/Israel-hater to work with them? Would Trump’s Orthodox Jewish daughter, Ivanka, whose children go to an Orthodox day school, ever allow an antisemite to work with her father?”

Again, I don’t presume to know what is in the man’s heart. Without a doubt, there is a fringe group of pro-Trump hardcore bigots – racists, antisemites and xenophobes – that have spewed their venom on social media. Despite my disappointment that the campaign didn’t do more to condemn these haters, by no means is this any indicator that Bannon or the campaign agrees with this rhetoric.

The same voices trying to destroy Bannon ignored Hillary Clinton’s praise of the notorious antisemite Max Blumenthal’s writings and her request to Blumenthal’s father, Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal, that Max’s writings be shared with her staff.

Antisemitism is a tool of convenience for the political Left. When opportunity arises, they will show solidarity with the Jewish people by downing a bagel – a shmear campaign, if you will.

ZOA Head Wants ADL’s Greenblatt to Apologize to Bannon

Tuesday, November 15th, 2016

Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) President Morton A. Klein released a statement saying “it is painful to see Anti-Defamation League (ADL) president Jonathan Greenblatt engaging in character assassination against President-elect Trump’s appointee Stephen Bannon and Mr. Bannon’s company, Breitbart media. ADL/Greenblatt essentially accused Mr. Bannon and his media company of ‘anti-Semitism’ and Israel hatred, when Jonathan Greenblatt/ADL tweeted that Bannon ‘presided over the premier website of the ‘alt right’ – a loose-knit group of white nationalists and anti-Semites.’”

But Klein insists that, as pro-Israel writer (who happens to be an orthodox Jew) Joel B. Pollak wrote, Mr. Bannon is “an American patriot who defends Israel & has deep empathy for the Jewish people.”

According to Klein, ZOA’s experience and analysis of Breitbart articles confirm Bannon’s and Breitbart’s “friendship and fair-mindedness towards Israel and the Jewish people. To accuse Mr. Bannon and Breitbart of anti-Semitism is Orwellian.” He cites cases in wich Breitbart fought against anti-Semitism:

Bannon joined ZOA in fighting the anti-Semitic rallies at CUNY, a Breitbart reporters called CUNY officials and Gov. Cuomo aides urging them to do something about it.

Breitbart regularly publishes articles reporting that the Palestinian Authority defames Israel with blatant falsehoods.  On November 13, 2016, Breitbart reported that “the Palestinian Authority’s official TV network has been airing a video several times a day baselessly accusing Israel of poisoning former PA President Yasser Arafat and further claiming that Israel is targeting current President Mahmoud Abbas next.  Arafat died at the age of 75 on November 11, 2004, just outside of Paris. A French forensic team examined his remains and concluded that there were no traces of poison in his body.  Nevertheless, every year around the anniversary of his death, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel murdered him.”

On November 14, 2016 Breitbart reported the human cost and pain to a Jewish student at the New School of finding a swastika scrawled on her dorm room door.

Breitbart publicizes Iran’s violations of the nuclear deal – which pose an existential threat to Israel.  On November 13, 2016, Breitbart reported that “despite a finding published by the UN’s atomic energy agency this week that Iran has — for the second time — stockpiled more heavy water than permitted under the terms of the nuclear agreement it reached with six world powers last year, the US State Department is declining to acknowledge this as a violation of the deal.

Breitbart also reports sympathetically on the scourge of anti-Semitic, anti-Israel boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS).  On November 2, 2016, Breitbart reported that “reports of anti-Semitic incidents on US college campuses have increased, much of it attributed to the rise of the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.”

Klein declared the ZOA is urging “Jonathan Greenblatt/ADL to withdraw and apologize for their inappropriate character assassination of Mr. Bannon and Breitbart Media.”

‘Sec’y of Nonsense’ Kerry: PA-Israel Pact the Key to Mideast Peace

Thursday, September 12th, 2013

Secretary of State John Kerry, after meeting with Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas in London, said that “a final status agreement [between the Israelis and the Palestinians] is important in enhancing regional security and stability throughout the Middle East” (‘Kerry pledges to peace talks during Abbas meeting,’ Breitbart, September 9, 2013).

“Secretary Kerry’s statement is utter nonsense. If the history of recent years — and indeed of the entire 65-year long period of the Arab war on Israel — has made one thing clear, it is that the lack of a peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians is manifestly not the cause of the Middle East’s conflicts, violence and bloodshed.

In fact, it is totally unrelated and irrelevant to the present violence and conflict in Syria, Egypt, Libya, Iraq and Yemen. If Israel didn’t exist, the same problems between and within Arab countries would still exist.

Consider: The Syrian regime of Bashar Assad has killed approximately one hundred thousand people in a war with Sunni Islamist rebels, who have also slaughtered tens of thousands. Massive instability and brutal violence is afflicting Egypt. Yemen has been wracked by internal conflict and thousands have been killed. Libya has become a jungle of jihadist warriors since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. In Iraq, over 5,000 people have been slaughtered in virtually daily suicide bombings just this year. Thousands of Christians have been murdered and many dozens of churches destroyed in Egypt, Syria and elsewhere. Not one of these conflicts has anything to do with the Israeli/Palestinian Arab issue.

Historically, the war waged by Arabs on Israel has had little to do with the numerous other conflagrations besetting the region.

In the 1950s, it had no bearing on the Algerian war.

In the 1960s, it had no bearing on the Egyptian invasion of Yemen, or the bloody emergence of the Ba’athist dictatorship in Iraq, or the Aden (now Yemen) Emergency in which hundreds were killed in violence.

In the 1970s, it had nothing to do with the Libyan-Chad war.

In the 1980s, it had nothing to do with the Iran-Iraq war, in which over a million people were killed.

In the 1990s, it had nothing to do with Iraq’s invasion and annexation of Kuwait — though Saddam Hussein absurdly linked them.

(A personal note: I was among heads of American Jewish organizations flown to Qatar in the late 1990s by the Emir of Qatar, who pleaded with us to urge the U.S. Congress to protect Qatar from a feared Saudi Arabia/United Arab Emirates invasion. This feared conflict — in which Arabs appealed to pro-Israel Jews for help — had nothing to do with Israel).

Why is the Obama Administration continuing to repeat false, ridiculous and discredited ideas invented by Israel’s vicious enemies?

It is not in the national interests of the United States for American officials to go around the world falsely stating that the “Arab-Israeli conflict” (which is actually, purely and simply, an Arab war on Israel’s very existence) is the core of the Middle East’s problems and that solving it is the key to regional stability. Not only is it not the core, it isn’t even a factor.

First, it is nonsense.

Second, obtaining an Israeli/Palestinian peace agreement, even if one could, would not solve other regional problems, which are rooted in the region’s ideological and religious pathologies.

Third, the mis-focus on the Israeli/Palestinian divide skews American priorities — as it is doing right now. How can Secretary Kerry make such an absurd statement when Syria is exploding and the region is wracked by violence and instability due to nothing connected to Israel or the Palestinians?

The alleged Israeli/Palestinian “peace process” has become an obsessive fetish which squanders American resources, credibility and standing. Why should the U.S. talk up a bogus peace process that is not going to deliver? Why should it accept the blame for the inevitable failure?

President Obama should publicly repudiate Secretary Kerry’s ludicrous statement.

Morton A. Klein is the National President of the Zionist Organization of American (ZOA).
