U.S. Consulate officials in Ramallah demanded that a visiting New York City official remove his kippa 10 feet from the entrance to the consulate, Brooklyn Councilman David Greenfield said.

He was visiting the American office in Ramallah on Sunday as part of a City Council delegation’s eight-day visit in Israel.

Greenfield implied he might have been able to understand there was a security problem if it were a matter of his standing in the middle of a Ramallah street with a kippa.

The last thing American security officials want is a religious Jew letting Muslims know he is around. Perhaps they might think he is plotting to blow up the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, or even worse, offering a peace compromise with the Palestinian Authority.

But the delegation of councilmembers was simply on a bus next to the consulate, Greenfield said.

Security officers “insisted that I not wear yarmulke when leaving US Ramallah office,” he said. When the officials agreed with the councilman that he was not endangering security, he refused the request.

Councilman Greenfield tweeted:

I’m still flabbergasted that a Jew cannot wear a yarmulke walking out of the US Consulate in Ramallah, Israel.

He told JPUpdate “We had an amazing trip to Israel. However, I was surprised that in the supposedly ‘moderate’ city of Ramallah, the unofficial capital of the Palestinian Authority, it’s unsafe for a Jew to wear a yarmulke

“After all, I wasn’t strolling through the streets. I was simply walking ten feet from the door of our bus to the entrance of the American Consulate’s office.”

  1. US Officials? Really? And who are they to make such a demand? Sounds like Religious profiling! Maybe they should demand that Muslims remove their masks when they burn and behead people! Their NOT US Officials – they’re TRAITORS – Enemies of the United States of America.

  3. Do US officials ask Muslim women to remove their head coverings? Men to remove their head coverings? Ask Imans to remove their head coverings? What kind of hypacritical is this? The Israelis would NEVER make the same request of Muslims coming to an consulate (if that in fact were to happen).

    They are a disgrace.

  5. 1) Greenfield has a First Amendment case against the federal government, if he chooses to file it. 2) Would they have challenged a robed and turbaned Muslim? I think not: that's a federally-protected and enabled minority.

  6. Most of us Americans despise Sheikh Oblunder of Obamastan…but he is our current dictator, at least for the time being. We constantly refer to Psalm 109: 8 in our prayers.

  7. What kind of s do the state department hire to work in our embassies and consulates? My hat is off to you Mr Greenfield the rest of the world has backed up too much already. This policy can only be the liberals trying to appease Muslems at everyone elses' expense and their right to worship the God of their choice. Lets stand our ground.

  8. And are Arabs in mortal danger walking the streets of the Jewish capital, Jersualem? No! Do Jews habitually threaten Arabs who are minding their own business? No! Yet it happens the other way around all the time. And the world is happy with this madness and intolerance, as long as it is towards Jews.

  9. They are Palestinians! The American consulates in Israel are all run by Palestinians now and put the American/Israeli in danger. If a war breaks out the last place and American Jew should run to is the American consulate. They are armed and ready not to protect American Jews but to kill anyone that is not Palestinian. The Israeli government turns a blind eye.

  10. You die and put everyone in your group in jeopardy because you are guilty by association. Jews, Israelis, IDF are not allowed in Ramallah, Gaza, West Bank, Jericho, Area A and certain parts of Area B in the West Bank. They are Arab occupied Apartheid areas and the Jew is forbidden. There are signs everywhere warning us to stay out.
When the Arabs cry Genocide and Apartheid it certainly does not pertain to Israel but instead to the Arab countries and their own people, the Arabs. The Jew is unable to be found in those locations unless they want to commit suicide.
When you see the college students protesting around the world and making all these accusations against Israel you really see how ignorant and narrow minded they are today.

  11. That takes a lot of "chutzpah," even in Israel. BUT good for him. No one should be able to tell Jewish people "Jewish protocol". In their own land. I see this as dear and covert antisemitism. Dr. Hanna I'm glad he stood his ground. We need more like that in America. (2-25-2015)

  12. I think all these Palestinians working in American consulate in Israel should be deported as persona non grata because they are dangerous to deal with. They will definitely not protect American Jews in times of danger – maybe they will even attack. No, they are not to be trusted. But how come, these Palestinians are assigned at the American Consulate? The diplomatic staff should consist of mostly true-blue Americans, just as our staff in any Philippine Embassy or Consulate anywhere in the world is mostly Filipino, and just a few locally hired clerical workers.

  13. Why is there a US Consulate in Ramallah? All CA activity is in The Embassy Tel Aviv. May be a good place to spy on the PA enemy. Why should any jake leg working in an American Consulate in Israel be so gutless and insulting? Sickening State Dept pukes…

  14. I haven't been this ashamed of America since Jimmy Carter and this Black Panther Muslim is even worse.Michelle obama said she was never more proud.I suppose a piece of crap would rather be in a septic tank than in a clean well lite city on the hill.Obama has divided this nation more than even Lincoln did.
