B’Tselem Complains to Netanyahu: Security Forces Mete Out Death Sentences to Terrorists

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015

The far-left B’Tselem non-governmental organization (NGO) complained in a letter sent to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week that he is “responsible for allowing a de facto death penalty” to be meted out to terrorists on the streets of Israel.

“On Wednesday a policeman in Jerusalem shot 16-year-old Nourhan Awad of Qalandiya; she was lying on the ground without moving,” the letter began. (Ed. note: it has been edited for brevity) “Her 14-year-old cousin was shot in the same incident, also after being wounded by the initial gunfire that felled her, and she died. And the day before, soldiers shot to death Basarakat Qatnani, 16, of Nablus (Shechem), after she was wounded when she was struck and run over by a car.

“In October there were shot to death in Jerusalem Basal Sidehr and Padi Elon; the shooting at them continued after they were already wounded,” the letter continued.

(Ed. note: B’Tselem fails to point out — and may even deliberately ignore — the fact that in numerous cases, wounded Arab terrorists have risen from supine positions and resumed attacks as soon as their victims’ backs were turned. In fact, the Arab murderer in Jerusalem last month on Malchei Yisrael Street attempted to do exactly that, even as he was faced with armed security personnel.)

“In each of these five cases, we are talking about people who were already “neutralized” and yet the firing continued,” the letter goes on. “Four out of the five were killed, and the fifth was seriously wounded.

“Regardless of who tried to harm anyone or did not, there is no obscuring the harsh reality: these are executions being carried out on the street, without recourse to due process or trial, immediately and publicly; and the suspicion is further raised because in these instances, bystanders participate as well.

“Under the criminal law of the State of Israel, the death penalty was abolished more than 60 years ago, in 1954. In any case, the death penalty was never handed down as a sentence after a conviction for cases of attempted murder….” the letter went on. “Israel does not execute, period. This is a stable and well established reality that was ratified again recently in the Knesset.

“The chilling gap between the normal attitude described above and the current reality is unbearable. In fact, since your tenure the “new normal” would seem to be “shoot to kill” in any case, even when there is no longer a suspect, or the suspect no longer poses any threat.

“This situation is a direct result of the impassioned discussion of government officials and elected representatives in your coalition, winners of your silent support.

“There has been no change in the orders about how and when to open fire when security forces are out on routine operations… and of course it is not legal to fire upon someone who is already wounded; however, in practice the reality is quite different.

“Who can remain silent when security forces are acting outside the law? One cannot wash his hands of the matter. You cannot tell your ears they have not heard it. The continuing silence in view of these developments, together with the general praise of the security operations make clear the policies that you advocate and that you support.

“Silence in light of the comments of Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, that “Every terrorist should know that he will not survive the attack he was going to make,” is a consent to this illegal policy.

“The lives of those who have already been shot dead cannot be brought back, but it is still not too late to stop the moral bankruptcy reflected in our current situation.

“It is your responsibility to make it clear immediately that no one has the authority to execute, and the role of the security forces is to protect the public — not less, but also not more — and not to make the security officers into executioners on the city streets.

“Best regards, Hagai Elad, executive director, B’Tselem”

White Supremacist Sentenced to Death and Tells Judge ‘Heil Hitler’ [video]

Wednesday, November 11th, 2015

Frazier Glenn Cross, the white supremacist who killed three non-Jews at two Kansas City Jewish centers in August, yelled “Heil Hitler” at the Tuesday hearing in which his death sentence was upheld.

Judge Thomas Kelly Ryan affirmed the jury’s decision to send Cross to the death chambers. The 74-year-old white supremacist was evicted from the courtroom for his outburst and ended up watching to end of the trial on closed-circuit television.

Cross, known as Glenn Miller, also was sentenced to 394 months in jail for on various charges.

Relatives of the victims of the shooting spree at the Jewish Community Center and at a Jewish retirement community spoke during Tuesday’s trial.

Cross, acting as his own lawyer, made several motions for a new trial, two of his arguments being that he was the victim of unfair media coverage and that he could not speak when he wanted.

He also argued that Judge Ryan made gestures to “let the jury know he was on the side of conviction.”

Cross exposed his twisted mind by stating that he shouldn’t be sentence to death because all in all, he killed the wrong people and not Jews.

One relative of Cross victim’s said at the hearing:

Cross has said had wanted to murder as many Jews as possible because they have ‘too much power.’

He also said that because of his chronic emphysema, he doesn’t think he has much longer to live.

Next Knesset to Consider Whether Israel Should Sentence Terrorists to Death [election]

Tuesday, February 17th, 2015

Foreign Minister and Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman vowed Tuesday morning that the first bill to be considered in the next Knesset will be one to debate whether or not to impose a death sentence on terrorists.

Liberman contended “we’re inviting more and more terrorism,” in an address at the INSS Conference in Tel Aviv.

“The fight against terrorism is the biggest challenge the world faces in the 21st century,” he said. “This is also Israel’s biggest challenge. But there’s a wide gap between that which Israel speaks to, and that which is actually carried out here,” Liberman continued.

“Releasing terrorists – including those who have committed the most horrendous of attacks, such as the lynching in Ramallah – is the worst possible message to send in the war against terror,” Liberman contended. “We have to show terrorists we are switching gears, that there are no more deals,” he said.

“What’s important is to already starting thinking about how to prevent the fifth round of fighting [in Gaza],” Liberman went on.

“Every military operation must end with a decisive victory, otherwise we’re eroding our capabilities and our deterrence,” he pointed out.

“Because we find ourselves in a military conflict against Hamas every two years Israel is unable to make long-term plans like a normal country – not on policy, and not on economic issues.” This is an untenable situation, Liberman asserted.

Abbas Wreaks Vengeance on Arabs Selling Land to Jews

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

Palestinian Authority unity government chairman Mahmoud Abbas has increased the severity of punishment for Arabs who decide to lease or sell their land to Jews.

Abbas issued the order – aimed at PA Arabs who make real estate deals with “hostile countries” and their citizens – on Monday.

The move followed an announcement by the Ateret Cohanim organization that publicized the acquisition of two buildings in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Shiloach, known also as Silwan, by a private Jewish entity. Nine Jewish families and rabbinic students moved into the two buildings.

Four years ago, a Palestinian Authority court reaffirmed that the sale of land by PA Arab to an Israeli is a capital offense that carries the death sentence.

In Monday’s order, Abbas amended the PA penal code to add a punishment of “hard labor” in addition to life imprisonment for any PA Arab who sells, rents, or otherwise serves as a mediator in a real estate transaction with “hostile nations” and their citizens.

White Supremacist Executed for 1977 Synagogue Killing

Wednesday, November 20th, 2013

A white supremacist was executed in Missouri for killing a man at a St. Louis-area synagogue 25 years ago. The execution had been stayed Tuesday evening by two district court judges due to concerns over the drug used for the execution.

The U.S. Supreme Court early Wednesday morning upheld the death sentence and the use of the drug, leading to the execution.

Joseph Paul Franklin, 63, was executed early Wednesday morning for the sniper shooting of Gerald Gordon, who was killed outside of the Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel synagogue in October 1977 as he left a bar mitzvah. Franklin also was convicted of seven other murders throughout the United States and claimed credit for 20 deaths between the years of 1977 and 1980.

The Missouri conviction is the only one that carried a death sentence, according to The Associated Press.

Franklin also bombed a synagogue in Chattanooga, Tenn., in July 1977.
