Torah scrolls burned in synagogue fire in northern Israel

Jews in the northern Israeli city of Tiberias were horrified to learn late Tuesday that in the afternoon, a major fire had consumed the city’s Mishkan Shalom synagogue and its seven Torah scrolls.

The cause of the Election Day blaze is not yet clear.

It appeared the fire was ignited near the Holy Ark, according to Israeli fire and rescue officials in northern Israel.

“When I arrived along with the fire department, the sight was horrific, as the Sifrei Torah were up in flames,” said United Hatzalah EMT Rami Levi.

“It was a miracle that no one was injured, or worse.”
