Fresco by Scotto, the non-kosher Manhattan Italian restaurant picked by Prime Minister Netanyahu and his patron, Casino Magnate Sheldon Adelson, for their get together following Bibi’s UN Assembly speech this week (See Bibi, Sheldon, Doing Traif Italian Lunch After UN Assembly Speech), has become the focal point of a raging storm in Israel’s Haredi newspapers.

After all, those newspaper argued, a prime minister so vociferous on the rights of Jews to a variety of territories and security guarantees could spend some time concentrating on the obligations of those same Jews, at least when he’s dining in public.

They dubbed it “The pig restaurant” scandal, even though, according to the NY Post, Bibi had veal chops.

Now the daily Maariv has revealed that after his lunch at the pig joint, Netanyahu was the guest of honor at a dinner with a group of Jewish billionaires at the Chart House, a sea food joint offering crabs, calamari and shrimp, which are all on the don’t list in Leviticus.

And while the pig lunch with Sheldon could pass for a private affair—just a meeting of a man and his sugar daddy—the Chart House gig was as official as they come. Present were Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer and his wife, Netanyahu’s chief of staff Ari Harow, and Netanyahu’s man in New York Ze’ev Rubinstein.

The tycoons munching on forbidden crawlers included Mort Zuckerman, Morad Zamir, Daniel Levi and Israel Schwartz.

Maariv noted that one of the billionaires at the table was Spencer Partridge, who gained notoriety a while back over the “Bibitours” scandal – he airlifted Netanyahu and his family around North America on his private jet, which the Israeli AG investigated for a while. Now the case was closed and so the friendship can be renewed over a plate of Shrimp.

A reader criticized my coverage of Bibi’s pig lunch, calling it “hate speech.” I suppose she will have something to say about this piece, too. I don’t believe I’ve advocated outright hatred for Bibi – but I did question his judgment. Manhattan is packed with quality kosher restaurants, every one of which would have been delighted to close for a day and feed just Bibi and his deep pockets.

It’s not a crime for Israel’s prime minister to eat traif in public, but it’s certainly in bad taste. Even when the meal is delicious.

  1. you can’t forever go on about israel being a jewish state, and not expect the occasional comment about a total lack of adherence to the jewish religion.

nor can you build for your self a “jewish state” and hope to marginalize those who most fanatically follow the jewish religion.

  3. We are a modern people . Thousands of Israelis eat non kasher. Why should the Prime Minister of Israel not do so in public if he wants rto do so ? There are hundreds of good non kasher restaurants in Israel .
It is time that we are open about a topic which is not secret to anyone .
Stop the hypocrisy and the religious straightjacket .

  4. The PM is still alive and Is still my leader and the best in the world. If God was against him eating there he should have struck him dead, so I guess there was no poison served “Long live Bibi / Israel.

  5. as the leader of the JEWISH state, he sets an example to the world. His action reflects hypocracy by eating in public taref, and holding meetings on Shabbat and holidays with foreign dignateries something his father and Begin would never do nor any Arab leader would do so where is his intellectual Harvard sense? dID Sarah EAT TERAF FROM HER MOTHER’S KITCHEN OF BILGORAJ? I KNOW HER FAMILY WOUILD BE VERY ASHAMED.

  8. Whatis the problem here? So, a Jewish man ate a meal at a restaurant famous for its pork. This is why the Jews in the world have gotten along with the world’s population. Theyhave always known how to “go with the flow”, and not try to try to push their beliefs on anyone. So what if Mr. Netnyahu didn’t follow kosher guidelines while dining. It’s NO ON’S business, but his!

  10. This article was annoying. While all Jews should eat Kosher, not all do. And as the PM of Israel, BIbi should.

    But…
Bibi served in the IDF and was injured in that service to protect his fellow Jew, which is more than the Hareidim have done.

Bibi helped build Israel and continues to, rather than leech off of it, as the Hareidim do.

And further, Bibi is a gentleman. He would never throw hot coffee at women, nor spit on them, or call little girls whores, or strike a woman as the Hareidi do.

And finally, Bibi Netanyahu would never cause a Chillul HaShem with the viscious, disruptive display of false modesty on an airplane as the Hareidim just did. No, he may not have eaten Kosher. But, who was there to see him eat?

But, the outrageous display by the Hareidim left many people, Jew and gentile, alike, with a bad view of Ultra-Orthodox Judaism.

And now they speak Lashon Hara….. My, what fine examples of Observant Jews they are.

  12. But we don’t know what he ate at the seafood restaurant. There are always vegetarian offerings on the menu. My rabbi obm had to eat in treif restaurants all the time while in ministry because his city didn’t have kosher restaurants. He told me he’d just get coffee in those instances. But even if Bibi ate treif, no one ever said he was Orthodox. Reform Jews eat seafood all the time. He’s not Israel’s chief rabbi, he’s a secular leader.

  14. Religious straight jacket? Get a life. This is undermining Judaism and Pipi could have gone to a Jewish owned Kosher restaurant and given the business to a Jewish owner. Pipi represents the Jewish state and is not a private individual. He also represents the Jewish people but he is subservient to the Jew hating CFR which he is a member of.

  15. Jus as I’m sick and tired of Effin’ Muslims having the audacity to tell the world what non-muslims should do and how they should love (according to Muslim’s evil koran), I’m sick of religious Jews telling less religious jews how to live. If you want to spend your whole life reading the bible, good for you! Don’t think you’re better than anyone else. Because you’re not!

  16. As was pointed out, there are a large selection of excellent kosher restaurants available in New York City. why not hold an official Jewish get together at one of them? Then religious Jews could attend too. Of course, just because seafood is on the menu doesn’t mean that the attendees were necessarily eating it. Maybe the writer should check the facts before stating what the attendees were eating.

  17. I don’t think that was ever in question. Like many modern Jews, Bibi probably pays lip service to Halacha. He may respect Jewish ritual, but doesn’t practice it to any great extent.
