Six short and medium-range missiles were fired at the Al-Udeid in Qatar; three missiles scored direct hits at the American air base, the largest in the Middle East, Arab media reported. The base is located in the desert outside Doha. Panic was reported in a Doha shopping mall during the attack.
US defense officials told reporters there were no casualties, but could not confirm the attacks on other bases in the region. Missile debris was reported in the Qatari capital following the Iranian barrage.
According to multiple American news outlets, at least one missile was allegedly fired towards Iraq, and Iranian short-range missile fire was reported at the US Navy base in Bahrain, where the Fifth Fleet headquarters is located. Iranian missiles were also allegedly fired at the US base in Kuwait, and missiles were reportedly fired at the US base in Saudi Arabia.
Other reports claimed 10 missiles were fired at Al Udeid — and only at Al Udeid — with just one missile scoring a hit in an open area in the base. No casualties, no significant damage.
Qatar had announced earlier in the day that it was closing its country’s airspace, without offering an explanation. The United Arab Emirates closed its airspace Monday evening, and Turkish Airlines canceled all flights to the UAE. Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq also closed their airspace.
According to the New York Times, Iran had informed the Qatari government — and the United States — in advance of the attacks, to minimize casualties. Qatar subsequently condemned the attack but did not offer any indication of a planned response.
The Saudi government likewise issued a statement saying it “condemns and denounces in the strongest terms the aggression launched by Iran against the sisterly State of Qatar, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and the principles of good neighborliness. It is unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances.”
The UAE also issued a firm condemnation of the Iranian strike on Qatari territory.
Iranian armed forces said in a statement the attacks came in response to the “blatant military aggression by the criminal regime of the United States” this weekend against the country’s top three nuclear facilities – Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan.
“The message of this decisive action by the sons of the nation in the armed forces to the White House and its allies is clear and direct,” the statement said, adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran will “never leave any violation of its territorial integrity, sovereignty, or national security unanswered.”
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said in a separate statement that its forces had fired the same number of missiles at its Middle East neighbors as the number of bombs used by US fighter pilots in their airstrikes.
The mullahs emphasized that the targeted bases were far from urban and residential areas in Qatar, underscoring that Doha was not the target.
At the White House, President Donald Trump summoned his national security team to discuss the attack. US sources said Trump had no plans to retaliate against Iran for the “failed” attack.
Meanwhile, US Air Force assets have been mobilized across the CENTCOM area of responsibility, according to Fox News, with American fighter jets scrambled from Saudi Arabia after having left Qatar for safety.
Saudi and Qatari fighter jets were reported airborne and Israeli warplanes were seen near the Iraq-Syria border.
In the past 24 hours, six supertankers carrying crude oil made U-turns in the Strait of Hormuz.
By Monday afternoon, US, British and French warships were all reported in the Persian Gulf; all were working a few hours later to intercept Iranian suicide drones heading for US bases throughout the Middle East.
French fighter jets were spotted flying within the US CENTCOM area of responsibility, and US fighter jets were reportedly scrambled to Qatar from Saudi Arabia.
British military personnel were ordered to evacuate from the Royal Air Force (RAF) airbase in the Greek island of Akrotiri, and the UK government instructed its citizens in Qatar, Jordan and Iraq to shelter in place until further notice.
The US State Department also issued a statement saying Qatar likewise advised American citizens to “shelter in place until further notice.”
