Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced Israel will accept an invitation from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to open a permanent office at its Brussels headquarters in Belgium.

The invitation allegedly came after Turkey lifted a veto that blocked the upgrade five years ago. If true, it is another move that signals a warming of the ‘big chill’ between Ankara and Jerusalem since 2010.

“This is something we worked on for many years,” Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting.

“I think this is important to Israel’s standing in the world. The countries of the world want to cooperate with us because of our determined struggle against terrorism, because of our technological knowledge, our intelligence deployment and other reasons.”

Israel is currently a participant in the NATO Mediterranean Dialogue, together with Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Mauritania and Morocco.

  1. this has nothing to do with a ‘diplomatic upgrade’ dont be delusional…. with the spread of unvetted refugees and the increase in terrorist activities throughout the EU, NATO needs israel’s counter-terrorism know-how, experience and brains close by as they are all bracing for the day they will be attacked again

  2. To make it easier for the US and EU countries to spy on Israel. NATO which has Turkey as a member for decades, is not worth Israel’s time. To allow a Islamist country, now that Turkey has changed fro a secular one, and which has been aiding ISIS as well as committing genocide on its Kurdish population, is inexcusable.

  3. Hopefully President Trump will either pull the US out or downgrade our membership in NATO, an alliance that serves no purpose other than to allow our European allies to transfer a major share of their military budgets to US taxpayers.

  4. Several countries including Germany pay to have US troops stationed in their respective countries so if the US pulls out of Europe either the government will have to pay these troops on U.S . SOIL OR DISCHARGE THEM FROM THE MILITARY. If this occurs the military will become weaker and therefore makes claim of building the military up from where Obama left it is in serious doubt. You can`t have it both ways.

  5. Norman Gardner They pay some of the cost of stationing troops, a small per cent of the total cost. On the other hand these worthless "allies" spend billions to develope the Eurofighter, a plane almost as good as an F-15 which went into service 20 years earlier.

  6. If Israel is going to work with NATO to bring about peace, the World will be in pieces! The Holy Spirit will not work with the unrighteous and the unjust! It is time the world said goodbye to all Lucifer's well established institutions. Who is the ruler of the world???
