NY Times Blaming Israel for Egyptian Havoc

According to the way the NY Times sees the world on Monday morning, Israel is "Escalating Efforts to Shape Allies’ Strategy."

The first outright finger pointing at Israel was published in the Sunday NY Times (Pressure by U.S. Failed to Sway Egyptian Military Leaders from Crackdown):

The Israelis, whose military had close ties to General Sisi from his former post as head of military intelligence, were supporting the takeover as well. Western diplomats say that General Sisi and his circle appeared to be in heavy communication with Israeli colleagues, and the diplomats believed the Israelis were also undercutting the Western message by reassuring the Egyptians not to worry about American threats to cut off aid.

Israeli officials deny having reassured Egypt about the aid, but acknowledge having lobbied Washington to protect it.

When Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, proposed an amendment halting military aid to Egypt, the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee sent a letter to senators on July 31 opposing it, saying it “could increase instability in Egypt and undermine important U.S. interests and negatively impact our Israeli ally.” Statements from influential lawmakers echoed the letter, and the Senate defeated the measure, 86 to 13, later that day.

The fact is, Israel—and the Saudis—are trying desperately to save America from its own delusions about a democratic Arab world springing forth with equality and freedom for all. Egypt’s neighbors are anxious about the possibility of a civil war in Egypt and understand that a firm government is the essential first step towards recovery from the events of the past three months and the past two years in Egypt.

But now, according to the way the NY Times sees the world on Monday morning, Israel is “Escalating Efforts to Shape Allies’ Strategy.”

The original headline, according to NewsSniffer, was “Israel Puts More Urgency on Shaping Allies’ Actions” and was modified twice since the earlier posting.

An unnamed Israeli government official told the Times that Israel is going to spend this week twisting European and American arms in an attempt to prevent them from pulling their support from the Sisi regime, even though his soldiers have been brutal in their treatment of the Muslim Brother demonstrators.

The official explained the Middle east realities in blunt terms: “We’re trying to talk to key actors, key countries, and share our view that you may not like what you see, but what’s the alternative? If you insist on big principles, then you will miss the essential — the essential being putting Egypt back on track at whatever cost. First, save what you can, and then deal with democracy and freedom and so on.”

And he added, even more bluntly:

“At this point,” the official added, “it’s army or anarchy.”

Speaking of anarchy, no one is certain that even with full Western support the Sisi regime would be able to withstand the onslaught of highly motivated, unafraid Muslim Brothers. While the army is bound by some modicum of restraint, the Muslim Brothers recognize no such boundaries. While about a thousand of their number have been killed, they have been joyfully burning down Coptic churches and murdering Egyptian Christians in the streets. Over the long haul, if the Brothers are not stopped effectively, they could wear down the regime and demoralize the army. That could throw Egypt into a full blown, Syrian style civil war.

In addition to it being a public relations disaster for the Obama Administration, as caring individuals like senators Paul and McCain rip the president mercilessly on his policy and call for cutting off $1.3 billion in annual military aid to Egypt, there’s President Barack Obama’s injured ego. A project he began right after his election has collapsed right before his eyes, and despite all of his efforts to communicate his strong views on the matter (Sec. Hagel called Sisi 17 times), the Muslim Brothers revolution is no more.

“The violent crackdown has left Mr. Obama in a no-win position: risk a partnership that has been the bedrock of Middle East peace for 35 years, or stand by while longtime allies try to hold on to power by mowing down opponents,” the Times wrote on Sunday.

So now, it appears, the largely quiet efforts on the part of Netanyahu to communicate to Obama (the two are yet to speak directly since the start of the crisis) how crucial it is that American support—and the Egyptian-Israeli peace deal—remain intact, will be used to portray Israel as some kind of puppet master, goading the generals to shoot into the crowd.

Both Obama and secretary of State John Kerry have been trying to manage the situation during the Morsi rule, the Times reported, urging the clueless hyper-Muslim president to invite the opposition back into the tent, or else he’d have a revolt on his hands. He wouldn’t listen, either. It upsets American presidents, it turns out, when client states who eat out of their hand tell them to go jump in the lake.

But Obama and Kerry are not listening either, to the sound advise of their true friends in the region, Israel and Saudi Arabia. They’re too concerned about appearing as if they condone their client shooting into crowds of his own civilians. So they, too, are telling Netanyahu to go jump in the lake, sound advice and all.

No big deal. He’s been swimming in that lake, on and off, for half a decade.

ny times is always blaming Israel. NY times is not to be trusted ever. Very anti israeli anti semitic paper. very disappointing, I’ts a joke I’d rather read the post than the times lol that says it all :)

  2. JD Mora says:

The NY Times is an idiot and so is Obama/Kerry/Hillary

  3. Claro Magallanes says:

The Brothers kill Christians and burned Christian churches in Egypt. These were not the events during Mubarak regime, not until the Brothers rose to power. Now they still continue with their brutal acts of killing Christians and burning churches in Egypt, how much more if the Brothers continued in power. Saudi Arabia even sided with Egypt present regime for I think they see the Brothers are really a threat to the Arab world. I wonder why Israel is blamed with such events.

  4. Leona Bazylak Quigley says:

    HOGWASH! !! Liars & anti-Semitics!

  5. Curtis Townsend says:

As long as Israel lives, they will be blamed..

  6. Shemayah Shiloh Phillips says:

Speaking of Christians, which Israel does not persecute in spite of the centuries of evil they have visited on Jews, and in spite of my pleasure in seeing Christians wiped out, it is the same type of people who do evil all day long that blame a mythical devil for all their problems who blame Jews (Israel) the same way. Muslims, Nazis, Christians, etc., will blame a Satan or Jews instead of taking responsibility for their own actions and beliefs.

  7. Jane Samuelson Ellis says:

So it's better to support the Muslim Brotherhood!

  8. Gary Chuven says:

NY Times: All the news that fits, we print. And we are not above manufacturing it when needed to increase our readership.

  9. Danielle Chisolm says:

The media in general is calling this a coup and backing the brotherhood as under dogs. It's so wrong. The brotherhood is killing policemen and burning down churches. Obama has dropped the ball on this yet again.

  10. Danielle Chisolm says:

He made that hideous comment that the Egyptians need to work it out for themselves. How is that possible ? Maybe the US and Halliburton and the IMF should remove themselves from all of Africa and then he can make a statement like that.

  11. Danielle Chisolm says:

Sorry I hate to go on about it but god forbid we should back the secular majority the represents the true meaning of the Arab spring. Oh that's right we make too much money the dictators in power.

  12. Janice Rogers Lilly says:

Shemayah, you are doing the same thing that you accuse the Christian of doing,,this is just a vicious cycle for many. You speak how we blame the devil {yes, he is real and creating evil havoc is what he does}, the devil is an “angel gone bad” and he will do anything to cause hate, illness, sorrow. I don’t know what your “faith” is and I don’t know who or what has turned you personally against Christianity, but I do feel sorry for you as you act like a “Nazi” against Christians. I, personally love and care for all, I love the Jewish people as they are Gods chosen, but for the Christian that is striving to do right in God and you “slam” them,,,,I pray Gods forgiveness for you. Don’t hate us all as many of us care for you and others.

  13. Craig Kirk says:

real question and no joking or playing here don’t the Jews own new York times, what the hell is going on here..

  14. William J Hurst says:

There are Jews that do not believe in Israel, just as George Soros and Barak Obama are against America and are trying to bring it down.

  15. you mean there are those who still read the ny times? it's just an anti-semitic rag that's getting filthier every day. I wouldn't clean a dirty toilet with the newspaper, it would just make it dirtier. yecch.

  16. Ron Mech says:

If America abandons Egypt it will drive it into the arms of the Russians and the danger is that Egypt will return to the cold-war Nasser era. Russia relishes the opportunity to get back into Egypt just as it is in Syria supporting and arming Assad. Watch this space with baited breath!

  17. David Newton says:

Hitler used the democratic system to get elected and then proceeded to dismantle all forms of democracy in Germany. Why is it so difficult for the NY Times, Obama Admin.etc. to understand this analogy. General Sisi is a complete hero and should be given full international support!

  18. The NY Times is the most disgraceful major newspaper in the U.S. It purports to be the nation's newspaper, while being biased in news coverage, editorial content, and as a servant to all the leftists in the world. In this way, it is now a servant of Islamofascism in all its ugly ways.

It is constant in its drumbeat against Israel, and twists the news and its editorials so far to the left, as to make it no longer representative of being a national icon.

Israel, and other nations, are trying to put themselves out of harm's way. While the US plays both sides of the coin, the EU is in its usual fatuous dreamer-state where they defend protecting themselves from terrorists by blaming Israel, the NYT never gives voice to anyone with whom it disagrees…especially overseas.

I can hardly wait for them to be sold to someone who wants to leverage the NYT's name and history for something better than NYT own at present.

They are a disgrace, and merely reflect in the pages what is wrong with the US, and why everyone despises us.

  19. Gerd Kaluski says:

Amazing! The administration is caught between a rock and a hard spot.  It would be a disaster to support the former Morsi Presidency of Egypt, considering Morsi’s and the Islamic Brotherhood,s close ties with Hamas.  It appears that now the majority of the Egyptian population is against Morsi and his failed administrations attempts to turn Egypt into an autocratic Islamic state. The Obama administration would be wise to back Egypt’s new government, or stay out of this situation.

  20. Vicki Morris says:

Egypt is Egypt…no man declares its fate;only the Creator, Our Maker.

  25. Well the NYT can't blame Obama, they have a incestuous relationship so Israel is just a good alternative. No one in America takes the NYT seriously.

  26. Benjamin Fox says:

New York Crimes needs to get it's head out of where the sun don't shine, get off the Nazi plantation who will turn on them when all is said and done.

  27. The NYT is scared not more tabloids, so they are only yellorfin press.

  28. "…urging the clueless hyper-Muslim president to invite the opposition back into the tent…"

Wait a minute, which Muslim president are you referring to?

    (Sorry, couldn't resist. :-) )

  29. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – not Israel – are lobbying the West for support of the Egyptian military. Their campaign is orchestrated by Saudi Director of Intelligence Prince Bandar Bin Sultan – not an anonymous senior Israeli official as claimed by the New York Times, debkafile’s Middle East sources report.

  34. Hitler never got elected. His party got 42% of the vote in the last free elections held in Germny prior to his seizure of power. Because he had a plurality of the vote – his party got more than the Democratic Socialists or the Communists respectively – he used this in a backroom politics intrigue after the election to get in office. But he was NOT elected.

The only analogy that is useful here in comparing Obama to Hitler, is that behind-the-scenes intrigues got Obama in power as well. In 2008, McCain was on track to win in the polls for three solid weeks after the GOP convention…until the stock market crash…the timing of which was engineered by the Gulf Arabs who artifically jacked up the price of oil starting the previous spring in order to force the crash. How convenient. This was their 'last ditch maneuver' to make sure "their" guy got in.

In 2012, the election here was rigged outright. Who really believes that Romney got two and a half million votes LESS than McCain got on '08??!! That Obama "won" with slightly fewer votes than McCain got in '08??!! With everything that was at stake, are we really expected to believe that voter turnout in '12 was not only lower than in '08, but even in '04, even though there were 18 million MORE registered voters in '12 tnan in '08?? What were the chances that Obama would win EVERY swing state??!!

If I were in charge of rigging the election for Obama, I'd have tried to make it look less obvious. It was the crime of the century. Our democracy was utterly subverted.

The extent to which the NYT is in bed with Obama is a total disgrace.

  35. Islamists Parade Nuns as POWs, Replace Cross with Al Qaeda Banner.

    tell a friend.

Egyptian Islamists paraded nuns in Cairo as prisoners of war, looted churches and replaced a cross with a banner that represented the Al Qaeda flag, the London Daily Mail reported. The mobs of Islamists also set fire to the church classrooms.

“We are nuns. We rely on God and the angels to protect us,’ said Sister Manal. “At the end, they paraded us like prisoners of war and hurled abuse at us as they led us from one alley to another without telling us where they were taking us.’.

The mob hit, insulted and groped two Christian women employed by the school. RABBI DR. BERNHARD ROSENBERG

  36. maybe the Americans should keep their nose out of the middle east, they are trillions and trillion in debt, so how can they afford to send military aid to any country?

  37. Michael Gerges says:

    A military junta heads down

  38. Daniel Katz says:

Even if it was true who cares?

At least there is one stable country in the Middle East trying to keep the peace and assist with humanitarian aid.

What has Hamas and it's Muslim Brotherhood backers provided?

If Israel would invade they would be blamed.

If Israel does not invade they would be blamed.

If Israel did nothing they would be blamed.

Gaza's Egyptian border has been closed and the only supplies that are entering Gaza are coming from Israel. And let's not forget water and electricity too.

Maybe Israel should just do nothing instead?

    Then what?

The New York Times can go blow it out their despicable arses.

How about the 100,000 plus dead Syrian civilians instead? Not a word but give them time and this too will be the fault of the Israelis.

  39. Jo Jo Le Tiel says:

The operative word is "blame." Some folks are good at that, eh?

  40. Let's keep the HOOD in Muslim Brotherhood. They are not the brothers of the civilized Muslim community in any country. They may be the 'bros' of Barak Hussein Obama, but they are HOODS everywhere they prosper.

  41. DEBKA is about as reliable as The Weekly World News.

  42. Donny Kligman says:

The same way people who are in debt still pay for a cell phone, cable, and internet. A budget is always put aside for foriegn policy. The US should be involved in the Middle East except obviously Obama is the worst President in US history and has made a mess of monumental proportion.

  43. Mary Carrick says:

Can't say that, or you are a "Nazi who wants to gas 6 million jews!" :)

  44. Pat Brooks says:

It really doesn't matter one bit what NY or ANYONE ELSE says to degrade or put down Israel. Every single Christian KNOWS THE TRUTH! God knows the truth as He is their Leader in ALL THINGS! You're wasting your breathe when you put down Israel! We WILL NOT believe your lies!

  45. cosmodinowitz42 says:

No matter what you say in support of Israel, where the New York Times comes in, they will blame Israel even if a bulb blows out in the bathroom of a non Jewish household. The New York Times biggest pleasure is Blaming Israel for anything and everything. Why do Jewish people still read this rag? Stop reading this paper and stop advertising in this paper. Let them know that you are sick and tired of hearing the Times attacking Israel every day of the week.

  46. I dont believe that anyone really trusts Obama as he sends military aid to the palestinians to buy weapons so that they can keep on firing rockets at Israel. I also believe Obama doesnt know what he is doing.
