11 Dead in Philippine Typhoon

Wednesday, July 16th, 2014

Ferocious winds tore through the Philippines and shut down the capital Wednesday as the country’s first typhoon of the season forced some 350,000 people to leave their homes.

At least 11 are known dead so far after Typhoon Rammasun (‘Thunder God’ in Thai) tore off roofs, flung cars around the streets and ripped up trees by the roots in the city of Manila, home to more than 12 million people. Fishing villages in the outlying areas, hundreds of kilometers away, were equally blown flat by gale winds of up to 200 kilometers (124 miles) per hour.

Many foreign workers in Israel have family members in the Philippines, and the country is one of the tourist spots for young Israelis after they finish their military service. A past winner of a popular Israeli vocal entertainment competition was a foreign worker from the Philippines.

IDF Wraps Up Rescue Mission in the Philippines

Monday, November 25th, 2013

The IDF humanitarian delegation to the Philippines will leave from home on Wednesday and bring with them  two Philippine children who will be transferred to the Schneider Hospital in Tel Aviv for further medical care.

A military ceremony welcome the team at  Ben Gurion International Airport, during which Hanukkah candles will be lit.

During the past two weeks, the IDF medical teams have treated 2686 patients, including 848 children in field hospitals. Doctors, nurses, and medical staff performed 60 surgeries, most of them life-saving cases, and the IDF gynecological team was involved in approximately 36 births.

Home Front Command soldiers and officers worked on repairing schools damaged by Typhoon Haiyan and worked towards establishing infrastructure to allow water and food supply to the local population. Some of the IDF medical and rescue equipment will remain in the Philippines to be used by the German-Austrian delegation. The remaining equipment consists of eight tents, generators, various medicines and an X-ray machine.

IDF Delivers Premature Baby in Philippines (Video)

The God of Global Warming

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013

Originally published at Sultan Knish.

After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Mayor Ray Nagin said that the storm was divine punishment for “being in Iraq under false pretenses.”

Not only was a Liberal deity taking a position on WMDs and punishing George W. Bush by evicting a lot of black people from their homes; but the Democratic divinity was paradoxically also committed to progressive housing policies.”This city will be a majority-African American city. It’s the way God wants it to be,” Nagin promised.Bush is out of office. America is no longer in Iraq. And Democrats have been forced to search for new theological explanations for hurricanes, typhoons and volcanoes.

In response to the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan; the green prophets of the left are prophesying that their liberal deity is angry over capitalism and industrialization.

“Whenever Mother Nature wants to send an urgent message to humankind, it sends it via the Philippines. This year the messenger was Haiyan,” The Nation wrote.

The message was apparently that Mother Nature, not to be confused with the nice elderly lady who runs a blog about alternative medicines, really hates prefabricated housing.

“That it was climate change creating the super typhoons that were taking weird directions was a message from Nature not just to Filipinos but to the whole world,” The left-wing magazine claimed.

For those infidels questioning whether Nature (capital N) was really speaking through a struggling lefty publication begging readers for money to pay its postal bills, its expert on typhoon theology had an answer.

“Is it a coincidence, ask some people who are not exactly religious, that both Pablo and Yolanda arrived at the time of the global climate negotiations?”

It is of course the very definition of religious faith to assume that a bearded woman in the sky is sending storms to threaten global climate negotiators (while missing them by two hemispheres and 6,000 miles). A more cynical person might suspect that climate negotiations are arranged around storm season for maximum effect.

The Nation, which regularly condemns “Bible Thumping”, had switched over to “Whole-Earth-Catalog Thumping”; building a religion around a Mother Nature who communicated her wishes through hurricanes and bankrupt liberal magazines.

Pacific Islanders used to believe that volcanic eruptions were angry notes from their volcano gods. The Yaohnanen tribe in Vanuatu on contact with civilization modernized their beliefs, and after encountering a younger Prince Philip decided that he had come from the volcano and that they ought to worship him.

And so the Prince Philip Movement was born. The islanders are modest in their requests of their god. “If he can’t come perhaps he could send us something,” the Yaohnanen Chief suggested, “a Land Rover, bags of rice or a little money.”

The Philippians may seem absurd, but their religion actually took a step forward from worshiping a volcano, which did nothing constructive and just destroyed things leaving the tribesmen to wonder whether the volcano was angry at their unjustified presence in Iraq or the waste carbon emitted by their cooking fires, to worshiping the Duke of Edinburgh, who can do constructive things like send them autographed photos. And perhaps one day a Land Rover.

While the savage tribesmen were approaching the margins of civilization; Prince Philip’s son was reverting to savagery and blaming everything wrong with the world, from local weather to the Syrian Civil War, on the great volcano god of Global Warming.

After some winter storms, Prince Charles announced that, “severe weather conditions in our country are, I have no doubt, the consequences of man-kind’s arrogant disregard of the delicate balance of nature.” It was the sort of statement that would have been commonplace a century ago. The only thing missing was that “Nature” had replaced “God”.The Yaohnanen tribe had moved on from worshiping a volcano god only capable of destruction; but the son of the living god they worshiped seemed eager to find a volcano god to worship. The savages were trying to become civilized, while civilized men were trying to become savages. At the Washington Post, the Rev. Dr. Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, a former president of the Chicago Theological Seminary and a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, gathered the tattered remains of her religion around herself and argued that Typhoon Haiyan was caused by human sin and needed to be atoned for by “confessing” that human beings cause typhoons.

But then Thistlethwaite, displaying less faith in whatever god she believed in than Ray Nagin had in his Chocolate City divinity and The Nation in its typhoon-hurling Mother Nature, added that “These “superstorms” aren’t an “act of God,” but an act of willful disregard for God’s creation.”

That is to say, God is dead. Instead Republicans must confess to the liberal theologians who speak for the superstorms, that they were the ones who made the winds blow. And if they don’t, then the speakers-to-superstorms will also hold them responsible for the next hurricane.

What miracle is the Rev. Dr. Thistlethwaite’s faith in superstorms founded on? Like the storms themselves, it’s a bit circular. “The fact that we are having to invent new language to describe such massively destructive storms, like “Super Typhoon Haiyan” or “Superstorm Sandy” suggests we need to take a different look at such violent storms today and theologically assess the human responsibility for them.”

Using the Rev. Dr. Thistlethwaite’s reasoning, the fact that we have a word for Superman suggests that we need to seriously investigate whether there are superhuman beings among us who can leap tall buildings in a single bound. But worshipers of the liberal God of Global Warming who hates the War in Iraq, white people living in New Orleans and carbon have a looser relationship with facts than Pacific Islander tribes.

The term Superstorm isn’t new. And neither are superstorms. In a listing of storms from 1932 onward, the first one shows up in 1940.

Back at the UN Climate Change summit, which apparently incites Mother Nature to spout off  typhoons like soda bubbles, the representative for the Philippines, Naderev “Yeb” Sano, threw a tantrum and demanded that Global Warming skeptics visit the islands to see the devastation.

Then he announced that he was going on a hunger strike until something meaningful was done.

In 1991, Tropical Storm Thelma killed over 5,000 people in the Philippines. The President of the Philippines has estimated that the death toll from Super Typhoon Haiyan will be less than half that

Before Christianity and Islam, people in the Philippines believed that storms were brought by Saraganka Bagyo, the God of Storms, or Galurâ, a giant eagle who brings storms. Another story has it that they originated from a dispute between the descendants of the sea god and the sky god. Now Carbon has become the new Storm God, bringing bad weather because people won’t do anything meaningful, like cripple their economies and destroy their standards of living to appease him.

Sano, like Prince Charles and Ray Nagin, is reverting to a paganism buttressed by a science so bad that it is indistinguishable from superstition and magical thinking.

Despite the Rev. Dr. Thistlethwaite’s faith in a superstorm apocalypse derived from spending too
too much time watching the Weather Channel, there is no actual pattern of increased storm activity. Nor is Mother Nature targeting UN climate negotiations with typhoons. The only pattern here is the one that a liberal religion that believes in little except human evil assigns to storm patterns.

If the God of Global Warming worshiped by The Nation and the Rev. Dr. Thistlethwaite seems senselessly malicious, it is because it exists in their minds as a reflection of human evil. The left proclaimed the death of God only to find themselves in need of some entity to inflict ruthless punishment on those who did not believe in their left-handed path; which in the absence of the Gulags they were no longer able to do.

Liberalism in act of idolatry built the God of Global Warming in its own image. Like liberals, their deity can destroy, but not create.

The God of Global Warming is the embodiment of liberalism and holds all the politically correct beliefs while carrying out brutal atrocities in the name of the left’s favorite political causes. With a moral logic as flawed as that of its worshipers, it is a deity that kills people in the Philippines for the carbon crimes of Americans and kills people in New Orleans because Bush bombed Iraq.Science only truly began to take off when scientists stopped trying to base it around their preconceived worldviews of how things should be, but began to actually draw conclusions from the data, instead of fitting the data into their conclusions. The human race did not suddenly become much smarter in the last few centuries. Instead our greatest minds learned a little humility and began getting out of the way of the data. Instead of trying to force reality to conform to their philosophy, they experimented with building a philosophy around reality. The left has killed reality-based science, along with so many other human accomplishments.

Global Warming is the worship of the left. It elevates its petty biases against industry and the middle class to the status of a religion. It insists on their right to act as the mediators between individuals and the economy or else the God of Global Warming will unleash her superstorms on the bourgeois infidels.

NBC Lauds Israel (And it’s Not Even Hanukkah Yet!) VIDEO

Sunday, November 17th, 2013

NBC News chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman was reporting live on Friday, Nov. 8 in Bogo, Philippines after the cataclysmic Typhoon Haiyan struck that nation of islands on Nov. 8.  Bogo is where the Israel Defense Forces set up their hospital, and began treating those in need. The IDF has named this “Operation Islands of Hope.”

Of course the bigger miracle -  or at least the more important one – is that the Israelis are able to help so many.  And the thanks?  A baby was born at the hospital.  A healthy baby boy.  The parents named him Israel.

Israeli Army Sends 148-Member Team, Field Hospital to Philippines

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

The Israel Defense Forces has sent a 148-member humanitarian delegation to the Philippines to provide search-and-rescue and medical services to areas hard hit by Typhoon Haiyan.

The team left Israel on Wednesday equipped with a field hospital as well as about 100 tons of humanitarian and medical supplies, according to the IDF. The team will set up the field hospital in Tacloban, capital of the Leyte Province.

Officers from the National Search and Rescue Unit of the Home Front Command and senior doctors from the IDF Medical Corps are part of the team.

On Monday, five search-and-rescue and medical experts arrived in Tacloban to determine the urgency of a rapid IDF response. Based on their assessment, the chief of the General Staff, Lt.-Gen. Benjamin Gantz, ordered the immediate deployment of the large-scale delegation.

How Do We Understand It All?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

As I write this column I am returning from the Philippines. Yes, the Philippines! Are there any Jews there? Hashem’s people are scattered throughout the four corners of the world. And now, as we enter the period described as Chevlei Moshiach, the holy flock has to be awakened and gathered.

Rabbi Azaria and his dedicated rebbetzin, Miriam, are leaders of the small community. How strong is Yiddishkeit in Manila? The answer is: as strong as the pintele Yid, a spark embedded in the Yiddishe neshamah. It’s not visible to the naked eye, but if you know how to ignite it, it suddenly becomes a flame, and that is what I experienced in the Philippines.

Even as I write this, I would like to report to our Heavenly Father that, Baruch Hashem, in all my travels, I have never seen the pintele Yid fail to emerge. To prove that it does exist, even when not visible: A man approached me following my speech and related that he is an American career soldier who has been stationed in countries where Jews are considered infidels. He and other Jewish members of the military were given the option of removing the designation “Jew” from their dog tags to protect their lives in case of capture. “Neither I nor any of my fellow soldiers ever considered this an option. Despite our secular, assimilated background, we would never deny our Jewishness. I just thought that you’d be happy to hear this, Rebbetzin,” he concluded.

And I surely was, for it testifies that even the most secular heart, the pintele Yid is very much there. Time and again, I thank Hashem for granting me the zechus of seeing that miracle unfold and Baruch Hashem, the Philippines was no exception.

The power of the pintele Yid never ceases to amaze me. Often well-intentioned people warn me to be careful in what I say. “The audience,” they confide, “is very secular. There is much intermarriage, and no regard for Torah and mitzvos.” I listen and thank them, but have never taken their advice. I speak the emes, which is Torah, from my heart, and Baruch Hashem, I have never seen it fail to awaken every Jewish heart. The secret is all in the pintele Yid that Hashem embedded in all Jewish souls.

I relate this so it might be a merit for our people in this difficult time. Almighty G-d, surely You must see that, despite the forces of assimilation that have eaten away at Your children, they never lost their pintele Yid. So please, Hashem, grant us the opportunity to bring all Your children home without suffering and sacrifice.

The plight of our brethren in Eretz Yisrael is always before me. From the creation of the State, 62 years ago, our people have experienced attack after attack; war after war, and for the past eight years, Southern Israel has had more than 10,000 rockets launched against them. It’s one thing to read or hear this, but it’s something else again to understand what that implies. Try to imagine for a moment that you are a resident in Southern Israel. Nowadays, the rockets are raining down not only on Sderot, but are penetrating deeper into the cities and of Israel, including Ashkelon, Ashdod, Netivot and Beersheva.

Now imagine that you hear, “Tzeva Adom! – Code Red!” You have to run for your life and have 15 seconds to reach a bomb shelter. Now imagine that when you hear the alert you are out shopping…and what if your children are not at home? Where do you find them? And what if you are elderly and have difficulty moving – never mind running? What do you do first?

Have you considered that children in these communities cannot play outdoors? In many locations schools are closed, for they simply cannot take a chance. Even older children are afraid to sleep alone and need parental comfort. And there is no end in sight, for the goal of Hamas is to kill Jews and annihilate Israel. Nothing short of that will satisfy them.

For eight years Israeli have seen their neighbors, friends and family maimed and killed. Throughout, Israel exercised restraint and did not react – something no nation on earth would have done. But now that Israel has chosen to defend the lives of her people, almost the entire world has turned against her. Anti-Israel demonstrations are everywhere. It matters little that Israel has made Herculean efforts to protect the lives of Arab civilians, and that Hamas terrorists use these very civilians (including children) as their shields.

Cunningly, they hide in hospitals, schools, and mosques, daring Israel to attack so they can cry “Holocaust! Humanitarian crisis!” The media and nations parrot their accusations and never stop to consider that these thugs are not freedom fighters, but murderers who worship death, who believe that killing Jews is their god-given command and if, in the process, their own families are killed, so much the better. They died a martyr’s death, gained world sympathy for their cause, and further incited abhorrence for Jews and Israel.

It defies imagination that all these “do-gooders” have not questioned the hypocrisy of Hamas terrorists who were given billions of dollars in aid to build an infrastructure, in which her citizens might live, thrive and create a viable Palestinian state. No one asks where those billions have gone. No one has thought to ask Hamas, ostensibly so concerned for the welfare of her people, why it used these funds to purchase lethal weapons and dig tunnels through which to smuggle them.

The Israeli government uprooted its own citizens from their land so that there might be a Palestinian homeland. Israel left behind the magnificent greenhouses it had created in the heart of the desert, which could have provided a livelihood for the Arabs, but Hamas chose to destroy it all, and replaced it with launching pads for terror. It is in the interest of Hamas to keep the Palestinians living in squalor so that they may tug at the heartstrings of the nations and justify their deadly attacks on Israel and the Jewish people.

World hatred of Israel and the Jews is difficult to comprehend. Israel created the only democracy in a region where, for centuries, oppressive dictatorships have held sway. Moreover, there is no nation that did not encounter the savage barbaric hand of Islamic extremists. To one extent or another every nation has had its 9/11. So how could these so-called freedom-loving people align themselves with these savage terrorists?

In addition to the age-old answer of anti-Semitism, 21st -century man has another reason to condemn Israel and label her a Nazi state. Although they would never admit to it, contemporary man is plagued by guilt for the Holocaust. How could an enlightened, civilized world have perpetrated such satanic evil, and how could democratic nations have countenanced it?

There are no good answers to these questions so Jews have become a source of embarrassment. By their very existence, they point an accusatory finger at the nations, so they are more than happy to absolve themselves of guilt by accusing Israel of Nazi tactics. And then there are the liberal leftists, who believe it is politically correct to support any terrorist group so long as it appears to be the underdog

So once again Israel finds herself alone. But that should imbue us with strength, for what we are witnessing is so irrational, so senseless, that it can only be explained as the Hand of G-d. Something unprecedented is happening in the world. If you know Prophets, you will realize that what is occurring was foretold thousands of years ago, “It is a time of travail and suffering for Israel, but from that very suffering shall emerge her salvation.”

As I write these words, it is Parshas Vayechi. The patriarch Jacob on his deathbed gathers his children to tell them that which would occur in the pre-Messianic period: “Assemble yourselves and I will tell you that which will happen in the end of days. Gather yourselves, sons of Jacob, and listen to Israel, your father” (Genesis 49:1). But strangely enough, Jacob does not make the revelation, and our sages explain that Jacob went blank – Hashem took away his Ruach HaKodesh and thereby prevented him from relating that which would happen. Why?

Could it be that Jacob did tell us what would happen in the pre-Messianic period – that G-d would be calling, but that we would be blank and not perceive His message? Since 9/11, we have had one wake-up call after another, from natural to economic disasters, and now, we are in yet another crisis. All our icons are collapsing so that we, the Jewish people, might come to the realization that “There is no one but G-d.” Our wake-up calls come, but we are blank – we do not understand. We have yet to hear the call of G-d and turn to Him.

The terrible suffering that has been predicted for this period is unfolding before our eyes – but alas, we do not hear His voice. We do not consider or comprehend. In his blessing, our father Jacob gave us an antidote through which we can protect ourselves during these difficult times: “Gather yourselves and be one – unify as one. Cease your bickering and turn to G-d and His Torah for that is the key to your redemption.” It is all summed up in the Talmud through a three-fold formula, and B’Ezrat Hashem, in my next column I will outline what exactly that means.
