Haifa University Predicts Arrival of Jellyfish in Israel Using Sea Temperature and Lunar Cycle

Thursday, August 25th, 2016

Large swarms of jellyfish reach Israel’s coast when the sea temperature ranges between 28.2 and 30 degrees Celsius and during the full moon, according to a new study from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management at Haifa University.

Jellyfish interfere with public systems and can injure and even kill swimmers. Jellyfish destroy fishing nets, poison or crush captured fish, and consume fish eggs and young fish. Jellyfish can clog cooling equipment, thus disabling power plants. Jellyfish caused a cascading blackout in the Philippines in 1999, and damaged the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in California in 2008. Clogging can also stop desalination plants and ship engines.

The Haifa University study reveals, for the first time, a link between sea temperature and the lunar cycle, and the arrival of swarms of Jellyfish along the coast of Israel. “It is possible that individual Jellyfish will also reach the coast under different conditions, but we discovered that the most significant swarms arrive under the above conditions, the proof being that in such periods the number of blockages of the Israel Electric Company’s cooling facilities with dead Jellyfish have been incomparably greater than during other periods of the year,” said Avi Algazi, an IEC system management unit employee who conducted the research.

The five IEC power stations located along Israel’s Mediterranean coast use seawater to cool the steam condensers which turn gaseous steam back to liquid water for reuse in the production of electricity. The stations use three levels of filtration to prevent the penetration of foreign bodies into the stations’ condensers, and there is where Jellyfish usually get caught.

Although Jellyfish have become frequent guests along the shores of Israel, and despite their obvious and immediate impact on humans, until now researchers were not certain as to the factors causing the massive arrival of swarms of Jellyfish one summer, while another summer sees fewer of these electric invaders.

Algazi conducted his study under the guidance of Prof. Abraham Haim, acting head of the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences and professor emeritus at the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management; Dr. Keren Or-Chen of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management; and Dr. Anat Geffen Glazer from the IEC. For his study, Algazi sought to examine a link between the arrival of Jellyfish swarms, as determined by operational events that have occurred at the Eshkol Power Station in Ashdod, and environmental factors such as wind direction and speed and seawater temperature.

The results showed that while the wind was not related to the appearance of giant swarms, 94% of Jellyfish swarms arrivals occurred after the middle of the year (approximately 176 days from the beginning of the year), during the second and third weeks of the Hebrew month, when the moon ranges between almost full to full, and when sea water temperature ranges between 28.2 to 30.0 degrees Celsius.

According to Algazi, Jellyfish also appeared when the moon was in other stages, or when the sea temperature was different from the range cited above. But such occurrences were infrequent, and were usually characterized by a small number of Jellyfish.

The research also revealed that although the blockage of the cooling system filters led to only a small decline in the production of electricity, they did add significantly to the cooling system’s operational costs. “The Jellyfish swarms arrive in June and July, when demand for electricity is high. Throughout those months, due to the high temperature of the sea, both available pumps are operated in order to achieve maximum utilization of the production unit. In addition, Jellyfish, unlike other large objects that get sucked into the cooling system, are not controllable; thus some block the moving filter after penetrating it, and prevent seawater from being pumped in. This causes the cooling pump to stop immediately,” Algazi explained.

UNESCO to Question Jewish Ties to Western Wall in Arab-Sponsored Draft Resolution

Sunday, July 10th, 2016

United Nations Watch, a Geneva-based watchdog organization, expressed concern today that UNESCO may fuel anti-Jewish incitement and violence, and the increasing PA Arabs’ denial of Jewish religious and cultural rights, by adopting an Arab-sponsored draft resolution that denies Jewish ties to Jerusalem’s Western Wall and Temple Mount.

The Jordanian-Palestinian draft text on the Old City of Jerusalem was submitted to the 21-member World Heritage Committee, which meets over the next 10 days in Istanbul for its 40th annual session.

“This inflammatory resolution risks encouraging the past year’s wave of Arab stabbing and shooting attacks in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel, which began with false claims that Israel was planning to damage holy Muslim shrines,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.

Under the battle cry of “Al-Aqsa mosque is in danger,” incitement in September by Fatah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad sparked a wave of terror attacks across Israel which began on the Temple Mount and eastern Jerusalem. At least 40 have been killed and more than  500 wounded. The Arab attacks include 155 stabbings, 96 shootings, 45 car ramming attacks, and one bus bombing.

The draft now before UNESCO includes the following problematic language:

  • The draft refers ten times to Al-Haram Al-Sharif, exclusively using the Islamic term for Temple Mount, without any mention that it is the holiest site in Judaism. This is part of a larger campaign at the UN, and particularly in UNESCO, to Islamize sites historically belonging to other faiths.
  • This year’s proposed draft is even more extreme than the resolution adopted in 2015. The new version three times uses the Islamic term Buraq Plaza while placing the parallel name “Western Wall Plaza” in scare quotes, implying skepticism or disbelief concerning what is the most hallowed site for Jewish worshippers over two millennia, due to the ancient wall’s connection to the Holy Jewish Temple destroyed in 70 CE. Last year’s resolution also sought to diminish the Jewish connection by putting the name Western Wall in parentheses after the Islamic term, yet the new use of quotation marks intensifies the denialism that was famously promoted by Yasser Arafat’s negotiator at Camp David, and which continues in Palestinian Authority statements.
  • Israel, which is referred to throughout as “the Occupying Power” in Jerusalem, is called to restore “the historic Status Quo,” with the new word “historic”—a change from last year’s text—implying a reversal of any changes since 1967.
  • Jerusalem’s light rail, which is used daily by thousands of Arab residents among others, is accused of having a “damaging effect” on the “visual integrity” and “authentic character” of the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem—even though the track passes through an existing highway and only facilitates transportation for visitors of all faiths.

The 21 members on the UNESCO world heritage committee are: Angola, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Croatia, Cuba, Finland, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Tunisia, Turkey, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. Good luck to all of us.

CAIR Says Trump’s ‘Hibi-Jabis’ Comment Endangers Muslim Women [video]

Sunday, July 3rd, 2016

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization which has been shilling for some of the worst anti-women regimes on the planet, believes the real danger to Muslim women in the US is presumptive GOP presidential candidate Donald J. Trump. This is because of Trump’s “apparent support for an Islamophobic town hall question which will endanger American Muslim women.”

During a question-and-answer session Thursday at a town hall event in Manchester, NH, an audience member asked candidate Trump, “Why aren’t we putting our military retirees on that border or in TSA? Get rid of all these hibi-jabis they wear at TSA?”

The questioner was referring to the “hijab,” the Islamic head scarf worn by Muslim women, as part of their task to conceal themselves entirely from male eyes, because males cannot be blamed if they are overcome by their desire and end up raping said women. In fact, under Islamic law, the raped woman is more often than not the party to be punished.

Trump appeared to support the questioner’s anti-Muslim views when he responded, “I understand. . . You know, and we are looking at that. . . And we are looking at that. We’re looking at a lot of things.”

“By appearing to endorse the bigoted views of one of his supporters, Donald Trump is placing all American Muslim women who wear Islamic attire in danger,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “American Muslims, and particularly Muslim women, are facing an unprecedented spike in discrimination and hate attacks, due in no small part to Donald Trump’s Islamophobic rhetoric and policy proposals.”

McCaw added that the proposed removal of Muslim TSA staffers devalues the crucial work they do on a daily basis to protect the nation.

Not crucial enough, apparently, as was evident last month when the acting head of the Transportation Security Administration was reassigned after an internal investigation by the Department of Homeland Security had found security failures at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports. The breaches allowed undercover investigators to smuggle weapons, fake explosives and other contraband through 95% of TSA checkpoints.

Earlier this year, CAIR said Donald Trump’s continued his use of “a debunked myth” about US General John Pershing executing Muslim prisoners in the Philippines using bullets dipped in pig’s blood was endangering ordinary American Muslims who were already facing a surge in hate.

But is it a myth?

In 1941, TIME Magazine ran a letter to the editor from a soldier named J. R. McKey who had served with Pershing in the Philippines decades before. In the letter, McKey describes using pigs in burials to deter Muslim insurgent activities, but does not ascribe the act to Pershing.

McKey wrote, “US soldiers … had a pretty good cure for juramentado [Moro swordsmen] activities. Knowing the horror of the Mohammedan for any contact with swine, and particularly with its blood, these American roughnecks, when they had killed a juramentado, held for him a very public funeral. The body of the defunct bad man having been deposited in the grave, a pig was brought, stuck, its blood sprinkled freely over the D B M, the dead pig thrown in with him, and the burial completed.”

Some reports do say that Pershing was engaged in burying Muslims with pigs or throwing pig’s blood on them. According to the History News Network, a Chicago Daily Tribune article from 1927 describes Pershing sprinkling prisoners with pig’s blood, then setting them free to warn others of being doused with the blood. “Those drops of porcine gore proved more powerful than bullets,” the article wrote.

Christopher Capozzola, a history professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also cited an incident in which Pershing brought a pig’s head to a ceasefire negotiation with a Muslim leader.

CAIR has previously stated that Trump’s pig’s blood claim and other instances of his “Islamophobic rhetoric,” including his calling for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States, his false claim that “Islam hates us,” his refusal to rule out special IDs for American Muslims, and his willingness to consider closing down American mosques place millions of innocent, law-abiding citizens in the American Muslim community at risk.

CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in anti-Muslim incidents nationwide since the Paris terror attacks, the San Bernardino shootings and Trump’s call for a complete ban on Muslims entering the United States.

It is possible however that the former two may be at least as important as the latter reason for hate against Muslims…

Khamenei Tells the World How to Destroy Israel

Sunday, August 2nd, 2015

The difference between Hitler and Khamenei is 80 years.

The Ayatollah of Iran has published a 416-page book entitled “Palestine” and whose book cover features the world “Palestine” on a map of the country he wishes used to be Israel.

Nothing is coincidental in the Iranian regime. The publication of the new book, bound to a best-seller in Iran, is part of a propaganda campaign to brainwash Iranians into thinking that the agreement with the P5+1 powers does not have anything to do with the regime’s ultimate dream of wiping out Israel.

Khamenei explains that is absolutely logical that Israel should not exist for three major reasons:

Israel is an ally of the “Great Satan” known as the United States of America;

Israel is a “hostile infidel” because it supposedly has waged war against Muslims’ and

Israel “occupies” Islam’s third holiest city, Jerusalem.

The New York Post reported that the back cover of the book credits Khamenei as “the flag bearer of Jihad to liberate Jerusalem.”

Israel is not the only country that should be erased, according to the book, which repeats the radical Islamic vision of a Caliphate Empire on all Muslim lands.

That means India also must be wiped off the map. Parts of Russia must be under Muslim rule. Several European countries should not exist as such, and China can kiss good-bye to nearly one-third of its land mass. Ditto for parts of the Philippines and Thailand.

Khamenei’s strategy for taking over Israel and all of the other “Muslim” counties is to create conditions that will convince everyone to leave for a abate life elsewhere.

That means Congress can relax and give its stamp of approval to ObamaDeal because Khamenei does not need a nuclear weapon to wipe out Israel.

Just lift sanctions and give him tens of billions of dollars to fund Hezbollah and Hamas, and perhaps the Boycott Movement.

The strategy actually is a statement of current events. The United Nations, and especially the European Union and the Obama administration, invent every opportunity to condemn Israel for promoting the presence of Jews in a Palestinian Authority country whose principle of “no-Jews allowed” violates the charter of the United Nations.

According to the New York Post’s report and translation from the Farsi-language book, Khamenei wrote:

We have intervened in anti-Israel matters, and it brought victory in the 33-day war by Hezbollah against Israel in 2006 and in the 22-day war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.

And once Iran has a nuclear weapon, if not next year then in 10 or 15 years, any Israeli pre-emptive action could be met by a nuclear attack. One way or the other, Khamenei wants the means to destroy Israel and much of the rest of the world.

His book once again exposes that Iran is no less a threat to Europe than to Israel, but Europe is so overrun by Muslims that its leaders don’t have the strength to see the future.

Instead, they focus on Israel, promoting the “two-state” solution while Khamenei writes in his book that there must be a “one-state solution of a single state of a Muslim Palestine.

Like Iran, it would allow Jews to remain, without a right to vote and only if they prove they have “genuine roots.” that means the a large majority of the Israelis, like myself, would have to get on the next plane and “go back” to the United States, Europe, Morocco, Yemen and the former Soviet bloc, among dozens of other countries.

1 Million Evacuated in Philippines Typhoon

Sunday, December 7th, 2014

One million people were evacuated Saturday as powerful typhoon Hagupit roared into the eastern Philippines.

Trees crashed in the pouring rain and whipping wind, bringing down power lines and ripping the tin roofs off small homes as the storm made landfall.

Most of the central island of Samar and nearby Leyte province, including Tacloban City, lost power.

But officials and coordinators of first responders were cheerful as they spoke to reporters, saying they had things “under control.”

So far, there has been no report of any casualties, in fact, despite winds of up to 110 miles per hour (175 kph) near the center and packing gusts of up to 130 mph (210 kph).

Hagupit, which means “lash” in Filipino, is being called “Ruby” by local forecasters and government officials.

Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas urged citizens over government radio to leave their homes in order to stay safe. “Ruby’s lashing will be severe,” he said. “Let’s be alert. Let’s evacuate to prevent any harm to your families.”

Approximately 100 domestic flights were canceled in the interest of safety.

But the typhoon was not expected to reach the capital, Manila, forecasters said.

Last year, typhoon Yolanda caused tremendous damage to the city of Ormoc, which has a large number of fishermen. The powerful typhoon destroyed their boats, and many were left without the means to support their families.

IsraAID in partnership with Philos provided the fishermen 11 motorized boats which enabled them to reach deep water, where better quality fish can be found, and then sold on the market.

Such fish also find their way to the kosher markets in Israel.

UN Commander Says ‘Raise the White Flag’ as Syrian Rebels Take UN Peacekeepers Hostage, Attack Others

Monday, September 1st, 2014

The chief of Philippine armed forces says it will ask for an investigation of the commander of United Nations peacekeeping troops in the Golan Heights who asked his troops to lay down their arms and ‘raise the white flag’ under fire. Two groups of United Nations peacekeepers — both of them Filipino — managed to elude capture by Syrian rebels in the Syrian side of the Golan Heights during the past 24 hours.

The head of the Philippine armed forces, General Gregorio Pio Catapang, told journalists in Manila that a group of 32 kidnapped Philippine peacekeepers trapped by the rebels in the Syrian side of the Golan Heights had been rescued.

“We may call it the greatest escape,” he said.

“Everyone is in a safe position,” UNDOF Philippine commander Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, said, according to the BBC. “We left our [former] position but we brought all our arms.” In addition, a second group of 40 UNDOF peacekeepers – apparently also from Philippines – managed to escape a seven-hour siege by the rebels after returning fire in self-defense.

The Philippine government has announced it will recall its force of 331 troops in October due to the deterioration of security in the Golan Heights.

A third group of 44 Fijian UN peacekeepers was kidnapped last Wednesday near Quneitra by the Al Qaeda-linked Jabhat al Nusra terror group (Al Nusra Front). The terror organization said in a statement posted on the internet that the captives were “in a safe place, and they are in good health, and that we have given them what they need of food and treatment.”

Jabhat al Nusra seized control of the Quneitra crossing with Israel — the only border crossing with Syria — last week. The group claimed it had carried out the abductions because the UN ignored “the daily shedding of the Muslims’ blood in Syria.”

The Philippine military is planning to demand a probe of the commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on allegations of endangering the safety of Filipino peacekeepers on active duty. (UNDOF was established May 31 1974, the day Syria and Israel signed a disengagement agreement to end the 1973 Yom Kippur War.)

Gen. Catapang told the BBC that Lt. Gen. Iqbal Singh Singha, of India, ordered Philippine UN peacekeepers to lay down their arms to ensure the safety of the Fijian peacekeepers abducted by the Syrian rebels. In addition to laying down their firearms, the general said the Filipino troops were also ordered by Singha to ‘raise the white flag,’ according to the BBC.

“He (Singha) said that if we were attacked we should raise the white flag. I said no way. That means our soldiers will also be held hostage,” said Catapang. The troops defied Singha and informed AFP Peacekeeping Operations Center chief Col. Roberto Ancan instead.

UNDOF is comprised of 1,223 peacekeeper troops from six nations — but it is not clear who will replace the Philippine troops in October.

11 Dead in Philippine Typhoon

Wednesday, July 16th, 2014

Ferocious winds tore through the Philippines and shut down the capital Wednesday as the country’s first typhoon of the season forced some 350,000 people to leave their homes.

At least 11 are known dead so far after Typhoon Rammasun (‘Thunder God’ in Thai) tore off roofs, flung cars around the streets and ripped up trees by the roots in the city of Manila, home to more than 12 million people. Fishing villages in the outlying areas, hundreds of kilometers away, were equally blown flat by gale winds of up to 200 kilometers (124 miles) per hour.

Many foreign workers in Israel have family members in the Philippines, and the country is one of the tourist spots for young Israelis after they finish their military service. A past winner of a popular Israeli vocal entertainment competition was a foreign worker from the Philippines.
