Tomb of the Patriarch Closed to Jews on the Following Dates

Thursday, June 9th, 2016

Due to the Islamic month of Ramadan, access for Jews to the Tomb of the Patriarch in Hebron will be forbidden on the following dates:

Friday: June 10 Friday: June 17 Friday: June 24 Friday: July 1 Saturday: July 2 Wednesday: July 6

There may be changes to the Saturday and Wednesday lockouts.

Jewish prayers on those dates will be held at the plaza of the 7th Step. It is called the 7th step, as when the tomb was under Islamic control, Jews were not allowed into the tomb, and not allowed to step higher than the 7th step.

The Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron is the burial site of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rivka, Leah, Adam and Eve (and the head of Eisav).

It is sacred to Jews, and also to Muslims, who revere Abraham as a prophet and father of Ishmael.

Fatah to Netanyahu: Stay Away from Jewish Holy Site

Sunday, February 15th, 2015

The Fatah and Hamas terrorist groups have threatened Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu with an escalation in terrorism. The threats were issued over Netanyahu’s plans to visit a Jewish holy site in Hevron.

Netanyahu is planning to visit the Tomb of the Patriarchs (Maarat Hamachpelah), the resting place of the Biblical patriarchs and matriarchs and one of Judaism’s most holy sites.

Fatah spokesman Osama Qawasmi issued a statement reiterating Fatah’s traditional claim that the Tomb is a Muslim, not Jewish, holy place. The site “is solely a mosque,” he claimed.

Fatah similarly claims that the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Kotel (Western Wall), and the tomb of the biblical matriarch Rachel in Bethlehem are exclusively Muslim holy places.

Qawasmi warned that if Netanyahu follows through with his planned visit, “we will defend our holy places.”

A Hamas spokesman similarly threatened violence if Netanyahu followed through with the “crime” of visiting the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

Fatah is headed by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Abbas has previously termed Jewish visits to the Temple Mount a “desecration,” and has accused Israel posing a threat to the holy site.

‘Observer’ Vehicle Used as Cover in Hebron Stone Throwing

Sunday, January 5th, 2014

This report was compiled with information from Tazpit News Agency and Tzipi Shlisel.

Jews driving through Hebron on Sunday morning were surprised to be hit by a barrage of rocks. Many private cars as well as a bus were hit at the Erez junction, near the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

One of the vehicles had its windshield shattered. No one was injured, thank God.

The drivers were surprised to realize the rocks were being thrown at them from behind a TIPH vehicle, which was being used for cover.

Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) is an international civilian observer mission stationed in the city of Hebron. It was first established in Hebron in 1994, and then shut down a few months later. After multiple attempts, the temporary presence was more permanently reestablished  in 1997 and continues operating until today, with a temporary break in 2006 during the Palestinian riots and attack on TIPH headquarters.

The stated mandate of the mission is “to promote by their presence a feeling of security to the Palestinians of Hebron and to help to promote stability in the city.”

It appears that TIPH is doing their job very well, as these Palestinian Authority citizens felt very secure in using a TIPH vehicle as cover for attacking Jews.

Following the attack, a number of the Jewish citizens began to chase after the stone throwers, but the latter managed to escape into Palestinian Authority controlled Hebron (H1) which makes up more than 80% of this ancient Jewish city, and where Jews are forbidden to enter under Palestinian Authority Apartheid laws.

According to its mission statement, TIPH monitors the situation in Hebron and reports on breaches of the agreements on Hebron between the Israeli and the Palestinian side, as well as international humanitarian law and international recognized human rights standards.

Netanyahu Orders Return of Jews to “Patriarch House” in Hebron

Monday, September 23rd, 2013

In response to the murder of IDF soldier Gabriel Kobi on Sunday, in Hebron, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given orders to act immediately and permit the return of Jewish residents to the “Patriarch House” in Hebron.

Netanyahu said, “Whoever tries to uproot us from the city of our forefathers will achieve the opposite. With one hand we will fight terror, and hurt the terrorists, and we will continue with the other hand to strengthen the settlements.”

Under the previous government, former Defense Minister Ehud Barak evicted the Jewish residents of the “Patriarch House”, with Prime Minister Netanyahu’s tacit approval. A court determined that the sale of the “Patriarch House” to the Jews of Hebron was legal, but they required the Defense Minister’s signature, which wasn’t forthcoming.

The Hebron Jewish community blessed the Prime Minister’s decision to restore Jewish residency in the legally purchased property. The community added that the government is fulfilling their historical and moral duty to return Jews to the city of our forefathers, and should take all necessary steps. Security should be increased so that Sgt. Gabriel Kobi is the last victim.

If and when Jewish residents are actually allowed back into “Patriarch House”, we’ll let you know.

Only one question remains, why did a soldier need to be killed for Netanyahu to finally correct this injustice he permitted in his previous government?
