The Jewish Press joins K’lal Yisroel in mourning the death, at age 95, of the Skulener Rebbe, zt”l, Harav Yisroel Avrohom Portugal. A long revered fixture in New York’s Jewish community, he was for years among the very senior chasidic leaders and widely acknowledged as a wise and sagacious elder.

He continued and expanded the Skulener chasidus founded by his father, with its legendary focus on the welfare of orphans and other uncared-for children in the wake of World War II. Known as the Chessed L’Avrohom, his concern grew into an operation that spanned several countries.
