And Now, to Complete the Set: Right Winger Bashing Scarlett Johansson

Friday, January 31st, 2014

I confess that I never heard of Debbie Schlussel until this morning, when a friend sent me her article “Scarlett Johansson, Israel, Oxfam & SodaStream: Starlet’s No Hero; History of Hanging w Israel Boycotters.”

You know me, I’m a sucker for unexpected news, so I dug right in, but before I did, I checked Debbie’s About page and discovered some stunning facts: did you know that as both an attorney and a frequent New York Post and Jerusalem Post columnist, her writings and commentary on radical Islam and her legal actions against radical Islamic parties have gotten a great deal of attention — and results? She caused FBI Director Mueller to revoke an award to an American Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorist. She caused Caribou Coffee to have its worst financial quarter ever, when Schlussel exposed the coffee chain’s radical Islamic ownership.

And she went undercover, dressed as a religious Muslim woman, to the Islamic Center of America, to expose its support for terrorism, and anti-American, anti-Semitic hate.

So I wasn’t surprised to find out that Schlussel does not have the highest opinion of Scarlett Johansson. She “obviously knew what she was getting into when she chose to lend her name, face, and presence to Oxfam, an organization that has been openly antisemitic, anti-Israel, and pan-Arabist for decades. It was that way when I was in high school. It’s not news,” she writes.

All of that is completely true. London religious Jews wouldn’t dream of setting foot inside an Oxfam thrift shop. It’s one of those well known things: you can buy Coke without a hechsher and you don’t shop at Oxfam.

“And yet Johansson–who had no problem “dating” (euphemism) anti-Israel Iran apologist Sean Penn, and attending a dinner honoring the Emir of Qatar, Israel-boycotter extraordinaire and owner of anti-Israel, anti-American Al-Jazeera–also had no qualms with Oxfam’s vicious anti-Israel doctrine for the eight years during which she was involved in the organization.”

“If you believe she didn’t know about and didn’t agree with Oxfam’s radical views,” writes Schlussel, “then you also believe the same about Barack Obama sitting in Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church. And I have some land in Gaza to sell you.”

Schlussel very much doubts Johansson’s pro-Israel credentials, pointing to the actress’s PR statement in response to the Oxfam imbroglio. “She supports Israel AND Palestine. But what is Palestine? I thought pro-Israel people realized there is no ‘Palestine.’”

Schlussel insists the star “didn’t sign on to be pro-Israel. She signed on to make a sexy Superbowl ad and make a lot of money. Cha-ching.”

But Johansson is not the only one getting skewered by Schlussel, who, in 2002, was named by radical Muslim University of Michigan Regent Candidate Ismael Ahmed as the reason for his defeat. You thought SodaStream were the good guys, seeing as they stick it to the left with their kum ba ya hiring policy in Judea and Samaria? You wish.

“SodaStream is one of those typical Israeli companies that panders to Muslims because they are politically correct and think this will help them escape the Judenrein boycott Israel campaign,” Schlussel rages. “They hired a lot of Palestinian Muslim workers. They built an on-site mosque, forever making that mosque (and the ground beneath and surrounding it) Dar Al-Islam ["Islamic land"] in the eyes of Islam. That’s Scarlett Johansson’s kind of company.”

What a huge mistake that was. “But because the company is owned by Jews, it’s never enough,” Schlussel warns. “No ‘good deed’ toward Muslims goes unpunished. Dhimmis are useful idiots, always and forever.”

“Scarlett Johansson as Israel’s new spokesmodel? Not even close,” declares Schlussel. “Courageous? Not even in the same ballpark.”

Scarlett Johansson Left Oxfam

Thursday, January 30th, 2014

Scarlett Johansson is ending her relationship with the humanitarian group Oxfam International, for their criticism of her endorsement of SodaStream, an Israeli company that operates a factory in Judea and Samaria, AP reported.

A statement released by Johansson’s spokesman said the actress has “a fundamental difference of opinion” with Oxfam International because the group opposes all trade from Israeli settlements, saying they are illegal and deny Palestinian rights.

“Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years,” the statement said.

This represents an annual income loss of about $100,000 for the humanitarian folks. In a sense, as one of the JewishPress.com readers has suggested, Scarlett BDSed Oxfam.

“She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam,” the statement continued.

The actress, the first global brand ambassador of SodaStream International Ltd., will appear in a commercial for the do-it-yourself soda maker during the Super Bowl half time, February 2.

Last week, the Oxfam website announced it was “considering the implications of her new statement and what it means for Ms. Johansson’s role as an Oxfam global ambassador.”

Well, implication this!

Incidentally, Johansson said last week she was a “supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine.” But that didn’t seem to leave an impression with the anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian crowd that kept pushing the organization to dump its biggest rainmaker.

Johansson has been supporting Oxfam International since 2004, becoming their global ambassador in 2007, both fundraising and promoting awareness of global poverty. She traveled to India, Sri Lanka and Kenya to highlight the impact of traumatic disasters and chronic poverty.

A spokesman for SodaStream in Israel told the JewishPress.com that the company is not planning to comment on Ms. Johansson’s decision.

Pro-Israeli Group Invites Johansson to ‘See for Herself’

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

The nationalist Legal Grounds organization in Israeli has applauded actress Scarlett Johansson for standing up for Israeli-based SodaStream and invited her to Israel as their guest “to see for herself the benefits that SodaStream and other Israeli companies based in Judea and Samaria provide to people of all religions and ethnicities.”

SodaStream recently signed on Johansson as its world ambassador, including an appearance in a commercial to be telecast during the Super Bowl game on Sunday. The company also is on the Boycott Israel target list because one of its 20 factories in the world is located east of Jerusalem, in the Judean Desert that the Palestinian Authority claims is its territory.

Johansson issued a statement earlier this week that SodaStream’s policy of hiring Palestinian Authority workers and giving them equal opportunity and benefits with Jews represents the road to peace.

She stated that she supports “neighbors working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights. That is what is happening in their Ma’alah Adumim factory every working day.” The factory is located in the city’s Mishor Adumim industrial park.

“We would like to recognize Scarlett Johansson for standing up to the anti-Israel BDS movement,” said the Legal Grounds Committee. At a time when there are those who seek to force their agenda through threats of boycotts and increased isolation, it is refreshing to see a public figure who does not just accept the false narrative of ‘illegal settlements’ and ‘occupation’ but understands the subtleties of the issues.”

“We encouraged our followers on Facebook to support Scarlett,” it added. We also applaud SodaStream for serving as such a fine example of the practical application of our Legal Grounds in Judea and Samaria.”

View the Johansson-SodaStream Ad Fox Won’t Let You See Super Sunday

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

What sin did the ad experts commit this year that prompted Fox News to can SodaStream’s scheduled commercial to be aired on Fox News during the Super Bowl Sunday?

Last year, CBS canned the commercial that showed thousands of Pepsi and Coke bottles bursting. The ad mocked the soda companies for hurting the environment while SodaStream customers can make their own soda drinks at home.

This year, the planned commercial did not show any disparaging pictures of those environmentally unfriendly bottles.

Instead, it stars Scarlett Johansson, SodaStream’s new ambassador to promote its machines.

The half-minute commercial was fine, until Johansson uttered the four naughty words, “Sorry, Coke and Pepsi.”

“No way,” cried Fox. How dare upstart SodaStream make fun of the manufacturers of two of America’s favorite unhealthy drinks.

SodaStream’s ad agency came up with another version of the commercial, without those four awful words.

UPDATED: Fox News Rejects SodaStream’s Super Bowl Ad (Video)

Monday, January 27th, 2014

See the update at the end of the article.

Fox News has followed the lead of CBS last year and has rejected a scheduled SodaStream ad that promotes its product at the expense of Coca Cola and Pepsi.

The Israel-based company has won headlines the past couple of weeks by Scarlett Johansson’s staring down the Boycott Israel movement and maintaining that SodaStream, which has a factory in Judea, otherwise known as part of the West Bank, actually promotes peace by hiring Palestinian Authority Arabs and treating them on par with its Jewish workers. The commercial that was canned before it could be aired during the Supper Bowl last year mocked Coca Cola and Pepsi for hurting the environment with its plastic bottles. SodaStream machines make the fizz in a machine in the home or office.

This year, Fox News is broadcasting the Super Bowl, and it is upset by the proposed commercial in which Johansson says, “Sorry, Coke and Pepsi.” Fox insists that the ad not name the big guys, which have a combined sales of $115 billion a year compared with only $562 million for SodaStream. The proposed SodaStream commercial was designed under the leadership of Alex Bogusky, one of the big shots in the world of advertising. He told USA Today, he is thoroughly upset “that Fox protects its big advertisers to the detriment of the environment and consumers.”

SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum told the newspaper, “If I could get my money back, I’d be happy to be out of that deal.” The reason might be that SodaStream has won so much free publicity that it may not be worth paying Fox News to air a commercial, especially if it cannot knock Coke and Pepsi. Below is a trailer for the commercial.

Update: JewishPress.com received the following update from SodaStream: A modified version of the ad is now running, with the phrase “Sorry, Coke and Pepsi” having been replaced with different words.

Johansson: SodaStream Gives Equal Pay, Benefits and Rights (Video)

Saturday, January 25th, 2014

In a statement released to The Huffington Post, Freedom Seltzer Queen Scarlett Johansson says she never intended on being the face of any social or political movement, distinction, separation or stance as part of her affiliation with SodaStream,” but since the anti-Zionist crowd on the left has been after her, she wants to “clear the air.”

“I remain a supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine,” Johansson said. “SodaStream is a company that is not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbors working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights. That is what is happening in their Ma’ale Adumim factory every working day.”

Johansson made direct reference to Oxfam, the international aid organization for which she has been a prolific fundraiser and supporter, and which supports the boycott of Israeli products made in Judea and Samaria.

“As part of my efforts as an Ambassador for Oxfam, I have witnessed first-hand that progress is made when communities join together and work alongside one another and feel proud of the outcome of that work in the quality of their product and work environment, in the pay they bring home to their families and in the benefits they equally receive,” Johansson said, adding:

“I believe in conscious consumerism and transparency and I trust that the consumer will make their own educated choice that is right for them. I stand behind the SodaStream product and am proud of the work that I have accomplished at Oxfam as an Ambassador for over 8 years. Even though it is a side effect of representing SodaStream, I am happy that light is being shed on this issue in hopes that a greater number of voices will contribute to the conversation of a peaceful two state solution in the near future.”

And now, for your viewing pleasure, a SodaStream video about building bridges between Israelis and Palestinians. East your heart out, electronic intifada…

Oxfam Conflicted by Pressure to Drop Great Fundraiser Johansson

Friday, January 24th, 2014

This is sooo much fun: leftist activists who’ve staked so much prestige on the good looks and good work of Hollywood star and sweet, caring person all around Scarlett Johansson, now have to work out a new take on her because, listen to this – she works for Jews, and the worst kind of Jews, the settlers, who took away Arab land just because said Arabs tried to kill them. But I digress.

According to the NY Times, the international aid and development group Oxfarm International “has distanced itself from one of its own global ambassadors, the actress Scarlett Johansson, since she agreed to become the face of SodaStream, an Israeli company that makes products in a settlement built on West Bank territory Israel has occupied since 1967.”

How deep is that cut, you ask? Check out the Oxfam web page on Johansson:

A long-time supporter of Oxfam, Scarlett was motivated to get involved by the organization’s response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

In 2007, she met tsunami survivors in Sri Lanka who were rebuilding their lives after losing their families and livelihoods, and saw how Oxfam projects such as village irrigation schemes and schools are helping to reconstruct devastated communities.

Scarlett’s appeal to US consumers on behalf of Oxfam Unwrapped drove over $100,000 in gifts for Mothers Day 2009 and generated worldwide media coverage for the gift catalogue’s Christmas promotion.

In 2011, Scarlett joined Oxfam’s GROW campaign, saying: “Sharing food is one of life’s pleasures… All of us, from Kentucky to Kenya, deserve enough to eat.”

Scarlett has recently supported Oxfam’s Typhoon Haiyan Appeal. She starred a short video urging people to make a donation.

Since she was named as an Oxfam Ambassador in 2007, Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has packed numerous fundraising, advocacy and promotional activities into her busy schedule.

And then at the bottom of the page, this:

Association with Israeli company, SodaStream

We are proud of our relationship with Scarlett Johansson who has worked with Oxfam since 2005 to support Oxfam’s mission to end poverty and injustice… Oxfam respects the independence of our ambassadors. However Oxfam believes that businesses that operate in settlements further the ongoing poverty and denial of rights of the Palestinian communities that we work to support. Oxfam is opposed to all trade from Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law… We have made our concerns known to Ms. Johansson and we are now engaged in a dialogue on these important issues.

Now for a surprise video: actress and environmentalist Susan Sarandon at the International Housewares Association Home and Housewares show in Chicago in 2011, promoting SodaStream. How embarrassing.

We’re back.

Notes the Times: “The charity’s response came after more than a week of pressure from activists seeking to end Israel’s continued occupation of the West Bank through a campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions, known as B.D.S., modeled on the 1980s movement that helped undermine international acquiescence to apartheid in South Africa.”

SodaStream is a major threat to the left in both Europe and the U.S., because it goes against their narrative. Like other Jewish businesses in Judea and Samaria that offer good employment for good wages to more than 30,000 Palestinians, SodaStream presents a path to peace that does not require making anyone give up anything other than their antiquated notions and penchant for violence.

The Left can’t tolerate that, because in leftist dialectics there must be a struggle, to destroy the evil system that is, ushering in the utopian system that will be. I’ve long learned that any politicians who uses the words “struggle” and “fight,” as in “I will fight for better wages,” is a leftist. He can be a Republican – in his persona he’s a Bolshevik. I prefer politicians who talk about building stuff, cooperating, protecting rights.
