This is news to me. Oprah Winfrey says she ran into Swiss racism when a clerk at Trois Pommes, a pricey Zurich boutique, refused to show her a $38,000 handbag, telling one of the world’s richest women that she wouldn’t be able to afford it. Winfrey earned $77 million in the year ending in June, according to Forbes magazine.

“She said: `No, no, no, you don’t want to see that one. You want to see this one. Because that one will cost too much; you will not be able to afford that,'” Winfrey, appearing on the U.S. television program “Entertainment Tonight,” quoted the clerk as saying. “And I said, `Well, I did really want to see that one.’ And she refused to get it.”

It was back in August, and I somehow missed it. If you did, too, well, here’s your chance to get with it, like us, in the knowitall media…

  1. Well, well, my heart bleeds borscht – a $38,000 pocketbook – that’s beyond my scope of reality – firstly and foremostly, and vis-a-vis “racism” – well, we all know how “neutral” the Swiss were during WWII – hoarding/housing/stealing artwork, funds from European Jews – and sending Jews back when caught entering Switzerland “illegally” – without “papers”. One was fortunate if one had forged papers, mind you.

  3. I have never watched Oprah, and have been accused of racism for not doing so…lol…but one of the commenters under the facebook news feed of this link got it all wrong. Oprah never said she made up the incident. In fact the store, Trois Pomme was soon discovered though Oprah wouldn't mention it by name. The manager admitted the incident, though claiming it wasn't racism. Perhaps it was mere condescension…lol… I often have wondered who would spend $500 on an umbrella from Sax Fifth Avenue, that looks like it couldn't compete for sturdiness against one for $19.95 from Macys, and now I know.
