Defeated Everywhere Else, BlackBerry Looking for a Win in Cairo

The website e-week reports that BlackBerry Canadian Maker Research in Motion (RIM) just told its shareholders at their fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call March 29 that BlackBerry smartphone sales fell by 21 percent between its third and fourth quarters. During the same period, revenue fell 19 percent.

But don’t mention any of this to the Egyptians, who appear to be pinning their hopes on the outmoded, outdated, outsmarted smartphone.

Al Ahram just reported on Sunday that BlackBerry’s maker RIM will open its first Africa-based development center in Cairo.

The center, which will be hiring Egyptian software engineers, will be established at Smart Village, the high-tech industrial park located alongside the Cairo-Alexandria road on the western edge of the capital.

It’s probably a good thing the Egyptians didn’t go with Psion…
