(Some have the custom of checking their tefillin twice in seven years. The Beis Yosef (Orach Chayim 39) quotes the Rosh who says this custom is based on a Gemara [Yoma 11a], which gives that timetable for checking one’s mezuzos. The Rosh, however, notes that there is a fundamental difference between mezuzos and tefillin in that the former are exposed to the elements. Other people do not check their tefillin at all. Finally, others recommend checking one’s tefillin after buying them by giving them to someone other than the seller. By doing this, one ensures that the tefikllin one bought were kosher.)
