It goes back farther than that. After Israel exchanged the Sinai for a piece of paper, the Bedouins living there were now dependent upon the goodwill of Egypt. Had Israel stayed in Sinai and saw the desert bloom in fulfillment of prophecy, the Bedouin would have had a much better life, with education and opportunities. Since the Jews gave away some of the land that Ha'Shem gave them, Sinai has been going the way of Gaza. You know; the way Yehuda and Shomron would be if you gave them away to your enemies also.
That's the bad news. The good news is that Ha'Shem's promises are forever. If you return to the places that you abandoned, He will probably give them back to you another time, like He did before. And this time, instead of giving them away, you can build up the waste places and you – and the strangers who dwell among you, will prosper under Ha'Shem.
Your enemies will still hate you and want you dead, but that's no different from now. The difference would be obeying Ha'Shem and being blessed for it. So you get blessed twice – you get to obey Ha'Shem and also you get His promised blessing.
