Israel is mourning the passing of former Justice and Israeli Prize laureate Menachem Elon, who died early Wednesday at the age of 89 and was buried in the afternoon in Jerusalem.

One of his four children is national religious Rabbi Mordechai Elon.

Justice Elon served in the Supreme Court for 16 years, until 1993. During his term of office, he was a candidate for the president, narrowly losing to Chaim Herzog.

Elon and his family fled Germany in 1932 and moved to Israel in 1935.

An ordained rabbi as well as a famous laws professor and author, he co-founded a yeshiva high school in Hevron.

About the Author: Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu is a graduate in journalism and economics from The George Washington University. He has worked as a cub reporter in rural Virginia and as senior copy editor for major Canadian metropolitan dailies. Tzvi wrote for Arutz Sheva for several years before joining the Jewish Press.
