Guess What? High Cholesterol Helps Elderly Live Longer

Getting old is not so bad after all. An Israeli study says the reward for keeping a low cholesterol diet until age 80 or so is to let it all out and munch away at French fries and high-fat ice cream.

A new Israeli study suggests that people in their 80s should throw away the low cholesterol diet and go for the French Fries and steak.

Researchers at the Belinson Medical Center in Petach Tikvah, located adjacent to Tel Aviv, tested 500 elderly patients over a period five years and reported that those with higher cholesterol live longer. The average age of the patients was 82.

Dr. Abraham Weiss, deputy director of the Department of Geriatrics, said that cholesterol, long thought to be risk to good health and a contributing cause to heart disease and brain damage, is actually good for people once they reach the Golden Age.

The Maariv newspaper reported the researchers’ conclusions Thursday and pointed out that the patients were not given any drugs to reduce cholesterol during the study.

Every person is different, but Dr. Weiss estimates that the surprising findings indicate that cholesterol has a reverse effect for the elderly and actually helps soften the arteries.

He warned that the study should not be accepted as conclusive but that doctors should think twice before assuming that it is advisable to give the elderly drugs that lower cholesterol.

Those under the age of 80 should continue to keep their cholesterol levels low.

February is American Heart Month in the United States, and the U.S.-based Home Access Health Corporation advised this week, “We all know people who have suffered a heart attack or stroke unexpectedly; that’s why it’s important for people to manage their cholesterol levels as part of an overall approach to good health.”

But once you get to the 80s, you might be able to healthily go back to eating chicken liver, b utter, whipped cream and lots of puddings.

  1. Reuven M. Rosenberg says:

Cholesterol is a very crucial platform molecule for the creation of other molecules. Very often problems arise from having low cholesterol, not high cholesterol. This is in the medical literature. Ask your doctor to check the literature and tell you why he is using very powerful drugs to lower your cholesterol and put you at risk.

  2. Reuven M. Rosenberg says:

Far more problems arise from low cholesterol vs. high cholesterol. This can be readily confirmed by the mainstream medical literature. Cholesterol is a crucial platform molecule in the creation of other molecules like steroids and sex hormones and is actually cardio-protective! The brain and every cell in the body need and use cholesterol and without it the body simply can't function.

The problem is not cholesterol, but rather systemic inflammation. Read that line again and again until you understand it and you are able to let go of the mental propaganda that high cholesterol is dangerous. 3. I know that there is 2 kinds of Cholestero.one ispositive the other is negative. I beleive the article means thepositive one. thanks for this information. iam vegeterian. I am 64 years. good health but after 80 I don't beleive that I can eat any kind of meat.

    • Actually there is a difference in LDL particles, not all are bad. Low fat diets cause over-consumption of carbohydrates, which is why our fat-obsessed society is fatter than ever and diabetes is rampant. Vegetarian diets are nutritionally poor. If you don't want to eat meat, have fatty fish like salmon.

  4. I shall reach 80 in october 15th 2013. I have started to have wine and dine theory back into my daily to do things.

  5. The research is good, but this article is shot through with errors. Steak yes, fries no. Butter yes, ice cream and puddings no–sugared dairy products contribute to cataracts, and there is growing consensus that Alzheimer's disease is Diabetes 3. Grass-fed beef is best. Soup with marrow bones is as good for you as it was for your bubbie & zaydie, just leave out the barley. Enjoy eggs scrambled in butter, and get lots of vegetables. Put real cream in your coffee, and have fun! AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE 80–LIMIT CARBS AND FEEL BETTER!
