New Visa Lets ‘X Factor’ Winner to Work in Israel as Singer

Monday, January 20th, 2014

Rose Fostanes, the Filipina caregiver who won Israel’s “X Factor,” will be allowed to work in Israel as a performer.

On Monday, Israeli Interior Minister Gideon Saar ordered the Population and Immigration Authority to issue Fostanes an artists’ visa, which will allow her to be employed as a singer. The visa also requires Fostanes to stop working as a caregiver for her employer of the past five years.

Saar interceded when it was revealed that Fostanes’ work visa was valid only for employment as a caregiver.

Fostanes, 47, chose the artists’ visa over one that would have allowed her to continue working as a caregiver while singing on the side.

Her prizes on the “X Factor” include professional representation and the opportunity to record an album with an Israeli record label.

The family that employs Fostanes had to agree to the change in the visa status.

Fostanes has been working as a caregiver in Tel Aviv for the past six years and lives in a small apartment in Tel Aviv with seven other Filipinos. She has been working abroad in order to send money to her family and partner since she was 23, and has not been home to see her family in two years.

At least 20,000 Filipinos work in Israel, mostly as caregivers.

X-Factor Judge to Visit Israel and May Choose to Be a Jew

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013

The expected birth of a boy to Jewess Lauren Silverman and her Roman Catholic boyfriend and X-Factor Judge Simon Cowell has prompted him to plan a trip to Israel and think about becoming Jewish, the London Mirror reported.

He told the newspaper he wants to make a “more informed decision” before he commits to the faith.

Let’s not count on Cowell, whose father is Jewish, to undergo a conversion according to Jewish law, but at least he can be counted on to support the IDF. He donated $150,000 to the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces at its recent annual fundraiser in Beverley Hills.

The Mirror reported that Cowell, 54, previously has not expressed interest in religion, but a source said, “He is open to reason on the subject of religion and the faith in which his [expected] son is brought up.

Silverman, 36, has elected to undergo a C-section and her husband has booked a $20,000-a-night private hospital in the United States for the event.

Paula Abdul to Celebrate Bat Mitzvah at Age 51 at Western Wall

Monday, October 28th, 2013

American singer, multi-platinum recording artist, choreographer, dancer, television personality, Grammy and two-time Emmy Award-winner Paula Abdul arrived on her first visit to Israel this week and plans to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah at the Western Wall, 39 years late.

She also will meet with President Shimon Peres on Tuesday.

Abdul was born in Los Angeles to Jewish parents. She once said, “My father is a Syrian Jew whose family immigrated to Brazil. My mother is Canadian with Jewish roots. My dream is to go to Israel for a real holiday.”

Israel’s Tourist Minister in 2006, Yitzchak Herzog, invited her to visit, which she said would be a “dream come true” but did not happen until this week. The visit may be a prelude to a singing performance next year, the Boycott Israel movement notwithstanding.

Abdul plans to visit major tourist sites in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the Galilee and will explore Israel’s fashion, dance, culinary and music scene.

She began her  dancing career at the age of eight and became a sought-after choreographer before she began to compose music and sing. Abdul starred in the hit reality show about her life “Hey Paula” and, in recent years, has served as a judge on the popular American talent shows “American Idol” and “X-Factor.”

L.A. Gala Brings In $20 Million for Friends of IDF

Thursday, October 24th, 2013

Simon Cowell, celebrity judge of the “X Factor” and formerly “American Idol,” and Grammy Award-winning musician Lionel Richie were among those who attended The Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Western Region gala Wednesday, which raised $20 million.

Cowell contributed $150,000, and Richie performed for a crowd that included the CEOs of several prominent technology companies, the organization said. Individual multimillion-dollar donations included $4.5 million from the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews led by founder Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein.

The organization aims to provide well-being and educational programs for soldiers in the Israeli Defense Forces, including the Lone Soldier program, which supports Israeli soldiers who are immigrants or otherwise separated from their families.
