While uniforms and all types of clothing are externals, they can have a major effect on the way we act and even more soon on the way we are perceived. In this sense, they can be either a force multiplier of or force detractor from what we are trying to accomplish. A number of years ago I had a discussion with some students on the importance of dressing appropriately. As we were leaving one of my students turned to me and said: “I get it. I might fly to vacation in sweatpants but I would be very nervous if the pilot was wearing sweatpants and not his uniform.” What more needs to be said?
