חַד-מַשְׁמָעִי

Due to its importance in politics and in day-to-day life, there are many ways in both English and Hebrew of expressing the idea of making something absolutely clear.

Perhaps the most common such expression in Hebrew is חַד-מַשְׁמָעִי, translating to unequivocal or unambiguous in English.

חד-משמעי means, literally, of one meaning, where חד  is an abbreviated version of אֶחָד meaning one, while משמעי  comes from the word for meaning itself, מַשְׁמָעוּת.

For example:
הַמַּכַּבִּים הֶעֱבִירוּ לַיְּוָנִים מֶסֶר חַד-מַשְׁמָעִי.
The Maccabees communicated (literally, passed) an unequivocal message to the Greeks.

כָּל יוֹמַיִם, כָּל שֵׁנִי וַחֲמִישִׁי listen The literal meaning of every other day in English is every two days. Its Hebrew equivalent is כָּל יוֹמָיִם listen. But there’s another meaning, one seldom used, to the expression every other day as well, more along the lines of all the time or very frequently. Here every other day is used with a tone [...]

אִי-וַדָּאוּת Human beings have a need for clarity and organization – we seek certainty in order to relax and go about our day.
