Through The Ages In Jewish Song: Itzhak Perlman on His New CD Collaboration with Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot

Perlman-Helgot-082412

I remember that evening. That is very nice to hear.

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

I am a classical music violinist. So my favorite music is classical. But I also enjoy listening to rock ‘n’ roll and to some of the oldies.

Do you have any interests or pastimes besides music? Are you a sports fan?

I’m a baseball fan. Unfortunately, my team has been playing very badly lately. Yes, I am a Mets fan.

Any closing thoughts on the new CD, with its release just two weeks away?

I am very excited about this. The violin is the perfect instrument to complement the chazzan. The violin touches the soul, and that is what the chazzan does in prayer.

I expect the CD to have a wide audience both here and in Israel. The cover is half in English and half in Hebrew. In Hebrew it is called “Hedim LaNetzach.”

Editor’s Note: “Eternal Echoes” (Sony Masterworks, distributed by Sameach) will be in stores September 4 and available wherever Jewish music is sold.

About the Author: Naomi Klass Mauer is associate publisher of The Jewish Press.
