A self-described former terrorist, Dr. Tawfik Hamid states that the Arabs' suffering must be acknowledged, but the source of their suffering is their own leadership.

Dr. Tawfik Hamid is a unique and solitary voice in the Islamic world. A self-described former terrorist, he was a member of the militant al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya with Dr. Ayman Al-Zawaherri who later on became the second in command of Al-Qaeda and now heads it. He stresses he has never actually committed an act of violence.

Dr. Hamid is currently a Senior Fellow and Chair for the Study of Islamic Radicalism at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. Dr. Hamid has a medical degree in internal medicine and a master’s degree in cognitive psychology and educational techniques. He writes that some twenty-five years ago, he recognized the threat of radical Islam and the need for a reformation based upon peaceful interpretations of classical Islamic texts. Hamid believes the real message of Islam has been hijacked by many people throughout history. Those people defamed Islam and portrayed it incorrectly. He says he started to preach in mosques to promote his message of and, as a result, became a target of Islamic militants, who threatened his life.

Expressing his opinion on the peace accords between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, Dr. Hamid places the blame for their failure on the Palestinian leadership. He states that the Arabs’ suffering must be acknowledged, but the source of their suffering is their own leadership. The PA leaders and Hamas are cynically and immorally using the Arabs’ plight for political and religious gain. “One million Arabs live in Israel with the Jews and they are not suffering like the Arabs who are actually controlled by the Arabs. To be honest you have to say that the Palestinian suffering is because of their leadership, not because of Israel,” says Dr. Hamid.

“The solution is in the hands of the Palestinians”, he says, “They have to take the decision to stop the suffering of their people.” he believes the key to peace is for the Arabs to change their attitude towards Israel. If they truly extend their hand in peace, all will be resolved.

  1. Micheal Ugwu says:

Can international community do something with this hard fact?, or are they still beleive that isreal are the aggressor. True moslems are always known by their stands and earnest contributions on burning issues. Many thank's to Dr. Hamid, keep it up.

  2. this is the real truth

  3. JoAnn Morris says:

Thank you for speaking the truth. Shalom.

  4. Jim Little says:

That took balls, thank you sir! Shalom

  5. Tawfiq Hamid is really not being quite honest here. He lays the blame for the failure of the talks on the Palestinian leadership. In fact, the leadership has nothing to do with the failure of the talks. The essence of the conflict are the sacred commands in the Koran and the sayings of Muhammad to make war against the Jews and either to subjugate them or kill them. No Moslem leader, whether Palestinian or Iranian or Pakistani or whatever, will violate those commands. Hamid knows the Koran, so he knows this. Why isn't he telling the truth?

  6. We must treat others as we wish to be treated. Kindness, Compassion and love could heal the entire Planet.
    I'd like to have freedom.

  7. Finally someone with a brain and logic. However Carl Goldberg is right. about tthe Koran which also allows Muslims to lie to a non Muslim. And those one million Muslims living in Israel with the right incentive could turn on the Jews at the drop of a hat. That Koran drives millions of people with hatred toward any non Muslim.

  8. Aldo Mimoun says:

It took a lot of courage for this gentleman to say the truth about arab's attitude towards the jews. I hope he'll continue to spread the word among his arab brethen.

  9. Ida Plaut says:

Good to know there are such Muslims.

  10. …ok – so the essence of this conflict are the sacred commands in the Koran … agreed. Nevertheless, immense improvements to the Palestinian quality of Life could have been achieved if their leadership would have done what Dr Hamid laments 'has not happened' … to say nothing of the billions-upon-billions of western monies whittled away in secret accounts or wasted otherwise but to build up – and for the world to see – their 'State of Palestine'.
