Marine Le Pen: Wearing Yarmulkes Should Be Banned

French right-wing politician Marine Le Pen said she supports a ban on wearing yarmulkes in public in addition to a ban on Muslim headscarves.

“Obviously, if the veil is banned, the yarmulke [should be] banned in public as well,” the French daily Le Monde quoted Le Pen, leader of the National Front, as saying in an interview published on Friday.

Le Pen’s anti-immigrant, anti-Islamist party has long supported a ban on Muslim headscarves, veils and burkas. France’s minister of education, Vincent Peillon, said Le Pen “was fanning the flames of fundamentalism” with her statements. “She is the main fundamentalist,” he said.

The president of the Conference of European Rabbis, Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, said Le Pen has “once again exposed herself as being unworthy of the mainstream French political space.”

“Her suggestion of a ban on wearing a kipah in public takes us straight back to the times of state-sponsored anti-Semitism under the Vichy regime,” he said. “Any sane politician will disqualify these comments as total madness and profoundly insulting to the French ideals of freedom of expression.”

Founded in the 1970s by Jean-Marie Le Pen, Marine Le Pen’s father, the National Front has established itself as France’s third-largest political party. In 2002, it made it to the second round in the presidential elections, clinching 17 percent of the vote.

  1. Why would the French want to ban kippot? I think I know why.

When I was a child, we used to spend the summers near Deauville, in Normandy, my mother told the landlady, after several years of renting, that we were Jews.

She simply couldn't believe it. "You can't be Jews". she said. Then she came closer to me and started feeling my head going all over it. Finally satisfied, she stopped and said "You're not Jewish you don't have any horns."

  2. Arie Rosenrauch says:

I understand obama has already contacted le pen to ask her help in writing a "ban the kippah" law in the US.

  3. OMG! This is an awful lie, in the entire World! Here in Brazil, until a burr that looks like a head with horns, is called 'head Jew'! Horrible!

  4. Acanthospermum hispidum DC. That is the specie of cocklebur sheep found here in Brazil, called 'head Jew'!

  5. Reina M Avila says:

The Kippot, unlike the Muslim headscarves, do not conceal ones identity by covering the hair and facial features. It is no different than a cap and is ridiculous to ban it for no other reason than it is worn by Jews.

  6. She is a trash representing the same trash… Lets ban democracy mith! Its the Orwell's farm…with bloody outcome

  7. Its obvious many left wing intellectuals/media try again to take a part of what she says in order to attack her easily and try to demonize her by portraying her as anti-Semitic.

This quoite, concerns only a debate about ban in public official (secular) spaces, and not private. Nor against religious officials as priests, rabbis in their everyday life and practice.

In reality she essentially charged Muslim provocative wearing such as veil, burqa, djellaba.

She added on French TV 1 :

"It is obvious that the yarmulke is not a problem in our country, but our country has changed and the delicate balance that we found in the exercise of religion has been disrupted by massive immigration from twenty years "I ask our fellow Jewish citizens, this small effort, surely this small sacrifice that allows equality, demand that we ask all and sundry. I'm sure that many of them are quite ready to make this small sacrifice."

"In the Republic I cherish, the rules are equal and therefore must also apply to all religions even if indisputably, some are more problematic than others".

For some other garments like the djellaba Marine Le Pen said that the garment "ostentatious signs involved as they were described in the Act 2004, which prohibits the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols in school and I want to see extended to public space in its generality".
