Criminal assault charges have been filed against the rabbi of the Jewish community in oberfränkischen Hof, Rabbi David Goldberg, for circumcision for religious reasons. Chief prosecutor Gerhard Schmitt confirmed that the complaint was filed by a doctor from Hessen, which is under the jurisdiction of the Cologne Regional Court, which decided a while ago that non-medical circumcision was a criminal offense.

According to the “Judische Allgemeine,” Rabbi Goldberg, who is also a mohel, or religious circumciser, was informed by journalists about the lawsuit.

Cologne Rabbi Yaron Engelmayer of the Orthodox Rabbinical Conference declared: “I’m shocked.”

It was the first time that a rabbi has been charged with a criminal violation in the Federal Republic of Germany because he performed a religious ritual..

Maram Stern, vice president of the World Jewish Congress, said there was an urgent need to create legal certainty about this matter. “We hope that the prosecutor will show sensitivity regarding this issue and will not initiate an investigation against the mohel.”

  1. I'm sure that's how the Maccabees felt when they were being sentanced to death for obeying Torah. It's like saying that it's illegal to be Jewish in Germany, again…

  2. Nachum Lamm says:

Geez, how do you anti-brit fanatics find every article? Do you have some sort of alert set up?

  3. Stephen Leavitt says:

Woohoo! The Intactivist nuts are back. Pageviews are going to go through the roof.

Parents make decisions for their babies and children all the time. Having an anesthetic while giving birth drugs the baby as well. There are studies that have shown that many of the vaccines that are routinely given to babies & children are dangerous, perhaps causing autism or other things. Gardasil has been shown to cause paralysis. And yet parents choose these things. Performing a circumcision on a baby as commanded to Jews and has been done for thousands of years is another decision that parents make. Perhaps piercing a baby girl's ears before she's 18 should also be illegal?

    • We are talking about excising the masculine prepuce which, like the feminine prepuce was intelligently designed through the process of evolution to cause sexual arousal when played with. It is an important part of our reproductive organ that is excised without need because of lack of knowledge in physiological functions, proper hygiene and safe use. A little education can eliminate the need to believe in superstitious rituals. Having a healthy prepuce is a joy to behold and a pleasure to reguard. Parents should not have to make a decision based on ignorance, misinformation or superstitions. Because God/Allah, Abraham or Mohammad said so is no excuse.

  5. Jose Denis says:

    Sexual abuse? You're an idiot.

  6. Anonymous says:

Circumcision will never be banned in Germany.
It is however important that the Mohelim are highly trained and have characters beyond repute.

  7. It is not too late to sign this petition in support of the Court Ruling in Cologne! Protect ALL children from unnecessary genital mutilation! To do otherwise, would be anti-semitic!

  8. All you that make a comment against the brit (circumcision) don't understand that this ritual is an important part of proudly being a jew, a man, 'cuz it's part of the covenant between Abraham and G-d. So for the jews it is not an abuse or mutilation of any kind. It's just a religion ritual, part of their way of living.

  9. Katarina TheAtheist Pyne says:

It seems they are moderating out the Intactivist comments. It saddens me really. Plus, this shows that circumcisers care not for the law.

  10. James Loewen says:

Seems al of the many, many the comments supporting children's rights to genital integrity have been removed, only those supporting genital cutting of children remain.

  11. Carter Gale says:

SHOULD CUT IT ALL OFF THIS BASTARD I LIKE ISRAEL /ISRAELI'S-THEY 'HELPED ME ALONG W/ SOUTH AFRICAN ASSISTANCE AT TIMES-IN ANGOLA/NAMIBIA- ISRAELIS ARE GREAT FOLKS-THEIR /ALONG W/ ALL RELIGIONS ARE A CURSE UPON HUMAN KIND.I QUIT BEING EPISCOPLE AT 11 YRS OF AGE. I SURVIVED W/ OUT IT. FOUND TAOISM IN KINGDOM OF LAOS IN LATE '60'S-A PHILOSOPHY !

  12. Steve Clow says:

Naturally they REMOVED the comment as it was too correct and too IN THEIR FACE for their liking.
