President Shimon Peres said Thursday in an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 News that Israel alone should not and cannot attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. With this statement, Peres has effectively positioned himself in direct opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

In the interview, the president stresses: “It is clear to us that we alone cannot do it. We can postpone it, but we know clearly that we have to go along with America. There are questions of coordination and timing, but no matter how much nearer the danger is growing, at least this time we are not alone.”

In Israel’s political system, the role of president has been designed as largely ceremonial, intended to preserve the balance of Israel’s democracy. President Peres’s decision to oppose the Prime Minister, who holds the executive powers, is a deviation from decades of tradition, and may result in some harm to the institution of the presidency itself.

Peres also addressed the commitment of President Barack Obama to Israel in connection with an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. “This is an American interest, and he (President Obama) sees this interest,” clarified the president. “Obama is not saying this just to please us.”

The president added that “Israel must rely on herself, but that does not mean she should give up on friends. When I say that I have a right to self-defense, it does not mean that I must be angry with everyone, whatever for?”

During the day, Thursday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak addressed the possible attack on Iran in the Knesset plenum, explaining why this action was necessary. He said that dealing with a nuclear Iran would be difficult, expensive and more dangerous. He added: “The decision, as required, will be made by the Government of Israel, not by groups of civilians and not even by editorials.”

The Channel 2 News full interview will be shown at 8:00 PM Israel time, 1:00 PM New York time.

  1. Peres should resign, he's done enough damage to Israel. Of course, resigning would be the honourable thing to do if Peres had any honour.

  2. see my article "Urgent Warning to American Jews".
If the US attacks Iran, NYC will be attacked, probably by Russia. Iran has treaties with Russia & China. 10 years ago God warned me about Putin, and told me to tell Amerfican Jews to leave NYC & go to israel. He had told me that origianlly 18 years ago, from Ezekiel 33 "warn them about danger". 10 years ago he quoted it again, saying "tel them the sword is coming".
Right after 911, God said to me, "tell them NOW".
Revelation 18, in the New Testament, describes a city that is the center of the arts and commerce that will destroyed in 1 hour. It is describing NYC. I have that witness & so do other prophets. God never stopped using prophets; it is an office in the church, according to the new testament, Ephesians 4:11.

    • Roc Diaz says:

the new testament is a false book of false revelations. dont come to israel

    • Roc Diaz WRONG. you're ignorant of the Old Testament also. Read Isaiah 53 and jeremiah 31:31. Both describe a new covenant where God will forgive sins. Jer says "I will make a NEW COVENANT – where I will forgive their sins." Isaiah 53 says "for the transgressions of my people he was stricken..my righteous servant shall justify many, for he shall bear their sins." I asked God if Jesus was the messiah and I had a dream where he showed me 2 scriptures: Jer 31;31 AND Zech 12-14. Zech describes when all the nations are gathered against Israel, Jesus will return, saying"they will look upon me whom they have pierced, and mourn for HIm an only son" a reference to the fact that there IS a trinity, Father son & holy spirit. The new testament says 'there are 3 that bear record in heaven, the Father Word 7 holy SPirit & these 3 are 1"
See my article "How to reconcile the trinity & the schma"

Exek 38 says God will make Russia attack Israel, so He can smite them to show his glory. it is soon. If Israel attacks Iran, Russia will attck Israel since Iran has treaties with Russia & China.

  3. do not forget an attack is a great danger.

  4. Arutz Sheva notes.

Coalition Chairman MK Ze’ev Elkin criticized President Shimon Peres on Thursday evening, after his comments regarding Iran.

“It’s too bad that President Shimon Peres is going back to being the old Peres of Oslo and suggesting once again that we gamble with the security of the citizens of the State,” said Elkin.

“If Begin had listened to Peres at the time, Saddam Hussein would have attacked us with missiles of another kind entirely during the Gulf War. If Rabin would have listened less to Peres at the time, we would not have gotten a terror base and missiles in Gaza threatening the south and Gush Dan,” he added.

Peres has always been politically correct and often practically incorrect.

The threat from Iran is the greatest ever faced by Israel Whatever Peres says should be disregarded.

  5. Bruce Becker says:

uhmmm…Peres.. HUSSEIN Obama is Not on your side or on the side of America or Western Civilization……liberalism is truly the most dangerous Mentall Disorder.
