U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton angered Palestinian Authority officials Sunday with a visit to the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem just a few hours after his arrival Saturday night.

Bolton is in the region for a four-day visit to Israel and Turkey.

“Undermining international law by representatives of a superpower will only lead to lawlessness, the logic of power rather than the power of logic,” wrote Saeb Erekat, former chief negotiator for the Palestinian Authority and head of the PLO executive committee, on Twitter. “This behaviour will not change the fact that East Jerusalem is occupied territory and the capital of the state of Palestine.”

U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman joined Bolton for the visit to the Western Wall, as did Israeli National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer.

The group received a guided tour of the Western Wall tunnels by Soli Eliav, chairman of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation. They also viewed a virtual reconstruction of the Holy Temple that once stood upon the same site.
