Obama Scolds Egypt by Cancelling Joint Military Exercise

President Barack Obama announced Thursday that the Egyptian security forces’ brutal campaign against Muslim Brotherhood opponents has convinced him to cancel a major joint US-Egypt military drill that takes place every two years and is a source of prestige to the Egyptian army.

“We want to sustain our relationship with Egypt [but] our traditional cooperation cannot continue as usual when civilians are being killed in the streets,” he said.

Obama did not hint of a more severe reaction, such as reducing military aid to Egypt. GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a fierce critic of the Obama administration’s foreign policy, openly hinted that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is partly to blame for the violence in Egypt.

“As we predicted and feared, chaos in Cairo,” McCain tweeted. “Sec Kerry praising the military takeover didn’t help.”

  1. Honestly, I do not understand Sen. McCain, whom I previously highly respected.

  2. Farid Saad says:

That just to show that he is still calling the odds.Minister of defense in Egypt, the no 1 that Obama needs to cooperate with for the exercises, has refused answering his call after evacuating Rabaa from MB.Minister of defense let his assistants to answer Obama, telling him that if he wishes to talk to someone, he ought to talk to a similar president, obviously Obama was pissed off…and rightly….all that does not give any ground for any cooperation. Also, as Egyptians, we refuse absolutely any cooperation with this administration. We feel like sheeted, we have been sheeted & we are sheeted.Any future talks between Israel & Egypt needs to be carried by Israel , alone.

  3. If clashes doesn't end in Egypt berween moderate Muslims and Mulim Brotherhoods could be very dangerous to outbracke a civil war like Syria, perhaps is there a solution like in Sudan, one moderate muslims goverment and other mulims brotherhood goverment and Suez Canal under UN control and Sinai under Israel control, or we are near to a WWIII,
