I believe this is the explanation of the Mishna in Pirkei Avos (chapter 1) “Asei Lecha Rav – Make for yourself a Rav.” We all need needs a rav for “ourselves” to balance out the sense of self that blinds us from making impartial decisions. Note that the Rambam says that the rav doesn’t need to be greater than you; surely the idea is that you need a “second opinion” from a reliable, unbiased, unbribed person.

We are blessed in this generation to have so many great and devoted rabbonim and rebbeim who want to help and guide us to make the correct decisions. May Hashem bless us with the wisdom to find our guides for life and the courage to allow them to lead us on the path Hashem would like us to travel.
