Public transportation, traffic signals and general infrastructure has shut down in the nations of Argentina and Uruguay due to a massive power outage that struck both at 7:06 am local time (1006 GMT) Sunday.

“A massive failure in the electrical interconnection system left all Argentina and Uruguay without power,” Edesur Argentina wrote in a tweet on Sunday.

The UTE energy company in Uruguay said in a statement, “A fault in the Argentina network affected the interconnected system, leaving the entire national territory without service, as well as several provinces of the neighboring country.”

Nearly 50 million people are affected by the electrical failure. It’s unclear what has caused the blackout, and it’s not clear when service will resume.
