Russian defense officials denied late Monday night a report earlier in the day that Russian fighter jets escorted two Israeli F-16s away from Lebanese air space, specifically in the area of Tripoli.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement quoted by Sputnik, “The information spread by one of the Israeli news outlets about an alleged ‘interception’ of two Israeli F-16s by a Russian Su-34 in Lebanese airspace is amateur nonsense.” The ministry did not specify which news outlets it was referring to; however, numerous Arab sources reported on the incident.
