Some 52 security prisoners incarcerated in Ramon Prison began a hunger strike Monday as part of a nationwide action by terrorist prisoners across the Israel Prison Service. More than 90 others are threatening to join.

Inmates are striking in response to the tightening of security measures in the prisons. Those measures are being implemented to prevent the infiltration of prison cell phones, and illicit cell phone conversations between terrorist inmates and their counterparts outside the prison walls.

In addition to the 52 terrorist inmates who launched the hunger strike on Monday night, 33 terrorists in the Nafha Prison and 60 Hamas terrorists incarcerated at Ketziot Prison have announced their intention to join the hunger strike — which doesn’t include water.

But only two of those who are currently striking have also vowed to abstain from water as well.

All personnel in the Israel Prison Service are maintaining a routine alert, according to the Hebrew-language 0404 military website.
