Is this surprising? What do you expect from the man who is now starting the seventh year of a four-year elected term of office?
The Palestinian Authority is corrupt through and through… and, as we say in Hebrew, "הדג מסריח מהראש" ("The fish stinks from the head").
Mahmoud Abbas, like his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, is corrupt to the bone– perhaps even more so than Arafat, since the late, unlamented Yasser had no sons to share the loot with.
Is it a coincidence that one of Abbas' sons is the owner of the largest cell phone service providers in the Palestinian territories?
The day will come when the Palestinian-in-the-street won't wait any longer for the next elections and will hold a different kind of election, with the losers hanging from the nearest lamppost or tree branch. Once that happens, all bets on what kind of government (or none at all) is chosen by the people are off.
My guess is that there will be civil war between the various clans until an organization like Hamas can take over and consolidate their power.
