For Internal Peace And International Cooperation

We presented our case at a June 2011 UN conference, at an April 2012 gathering in London, at the European Union Parliament in May 2012 and again in Hebron a month later. And just this week the Knesset Caucus held a conference at the U.S. Capitol for the purpose of gaining congressional support for the initiative.

As we prepare to recite the Days Of Awe’s solemn prayers in a heartfelt way, we pray that the Almighty will open the hearts and minds of our people – with the goal of living in peace with one another. We also strive for the nations of the world, led by their governments, to accept our yearning for peace and to work sincerely and honestly to achieve it.

(Yevamos 26b)

Question: I recently loaned money to a friend who has been able to repay only part of it. This was an interest-free loan. We exchanged a signed IOU, not a proper shtar with witnesses, since I have always trusted her integrity and only wanted a document that confirms what was loaned and what was repaid. Now that shemittah is approaching, what should I do? Should I forgive the loan? And if my friend is not able to repay it, may I deduct the unpaid money from my ma’aser requirement?

The 10-day period from Rosh Hashanah-Yom Kippur is, as is well known, a time to begin personal introspection – an occasion to look back at one’s mistakes of the past year and plan the needed changes to improve oneself in the New Year. In the U.S. it is also a time for Americans to make positive “resolutions.”

In our time we must always take advantage of the opportunity for a second chance to revive our identity as Jews in Eretz Yisrael, for without the identity of Israel as a Jewish state, we are truly at a spiritual and physical loss.

The Jewish Press is proud to announce a new monthly column by the founder of the Shas Party, Member of Knesset Rabbi Nissim Zeev.
