White House Seder 2012

President Barack Obama once again will hold a Passover Seder in the White House, perhaps a bit more serious than year’s National Jewish Democratic Council’s ego-centric desecration of the Four Questions, which his aides re-invented to glorify the Commander in Chief.

After “Preacher Obama’s” revival appearance in Israel, he is likely to take more seriously the Passover Seder tradition this year and is even more likely to come up with his own interpretations and meaning of the Seder.

For a man who had the chutzpah to tell synagogue worshippers in Florida during his 2008 presidential campaign that he is “blessed,” as indicated by his name “Baruch” that he said means “Blessed” in Hebrew, he will have no trouble in skipping over 2,000 years of Talmudic study of the Exodus of the Jewish People that led us to Mount Sinai and eventually to the Land of Israel.

Somehow, he will dig into the deeper meaning of Passover and declare that God brought the Jews to Israel to divide the homeland and give most of it to the Palestinian Authority, whose Muslim clerics also have done a nifty job of rewriting ancient Bible. According to them, the Binding of Yitzchak (Isaac) is the wrong version, and it was Ishmael who was bound. If you believe that, then of course the Holy Temples never existed and the Western Wall was Mohammed’s hitching post.

The problem with President Obama’s annual Seder ceremony, as evidenced by his “I believe” Hallelujah speech in Jerusalem, is that he truly does believe he knows better than anyone else, certainly better than Israelis, better than Arabs and better than Talmudic sages.

We would be better off if he were to run a repeat performance of last year’s travesty, when the “Four Questions, designed to educate Jewish children about the Seder, turned into a mockery of the president’s intelligence.

In case anyone forgets, the questions posed by the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) were: Why has President Obama provided record amounts of military aid to Israel?”; “Why has President Obama worked so hard and succeeded at uniting the world against Iran’s illicit nuclear weapons program?”; “Why has President Obama achieved the historic passage of ‘Obamacare’”?; and, “Why has President Obama fought to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid?”

Commentary Magazine’s Jonathan Tobin wrote last year, “Passover is the occasion for Jews to remember their liberation from Egypt and to embrace not only the gift of freedom but also the ability to worship God and His laws as a people.

”While Seders are appropriate moments to remember those in need as well as other Jewish communities — such as that in Israel — which are assailed by foes, it is not the time to be delivering obsequious paeans to American politicians, no matter which party they belong to. That sort of absurd distortion of the festival of freedom bears a closer resemblance to idol worship than it does to Judaism.”

President Obama is not paying any attention to Tobin. In his pre-Passover sermon at the Jerusalem Convention Center last Thursday, he said, “The Seder… is a story about finding freedom in your own land. For the Jewish people, this story is central to who you have become. But it is also a story that holds within it the universal human experience, with all of its suffering and salvation. It is a part of the three great religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam – that trace their origins to Abraham, and see Jerusalem as sacred….

“To African-Americans, the story of the Exodus told a powerful tale about emerging from the grip of bondage to reach for liberty and human dignity – a tale that was carried from slavery through the civil rights movement.”

After invoking a quote by Martin Luther King relating to Moses and Joshua, President Obama continued to the next obvious step – the Palestinian Authority.

President Obama’s inevitable reference to the Palestinian cause when he sits down for his version of the Seder with 20 chosen guests this week will be accompanied by everything that is totally the opposite of the message of the Seder, and that is materialism.

The matzah is the simplest of foods, unleavened bread. Jew lived on Manna during their sojourn in the desert. No cheeseburgers, no ice cream and not even meat, except for the plague that swept the Jews when they demanded meat and the quickly became sorry for what they wished.

  1. Just one correction: Barak means lightning, not blessed (Baruch). I agree with the article-replacing the Passover story with secular meanings is another kind of replacement theology; replacing Jews is another way of wiping us out. It's not okay; G-d did a special thing for the Jewish people to make us His people so we could teach the world about Him. Teaching that the seder is about freedom is not teaching the world about G-d. G-d & His miracles are central to the seder, as is the place of Israel in G-d's plan.

  2. When I saw that the author of this hit peace lived in Virginia that was enough for me to realize his anti Obama rhetoric had strong roots in a disdain even after the presidents trip to Israel was well received. This story has some unfortunate racial undertones that a true respectful Jew would stay away from especially now. Anger and hate offers very little to society. As one poster said give him a break! at least he is trying.

  3. Hitler tried as well…to kill as many Jews as possible. So true is Obama trying…he just gave an additional $500 million to the Palestinian Authority sao that they can buy and build more rockets to slam into Israel and kill as many Jews as possible.

  4. Obama is showing a great disrespect, Chrisitans do not worship Allah and Mohammed. G-d said that in Isaac, Abraham's seed would be called. It was Isaac who went down to Egypt during the famine, and the pharaoh did not know Joseph, so he oppressed the Israelites, and the Lord heard their cry, and delivered them out of Egypt with a might arm and great wonders. Also G-d drove out nations before them, who offered sacrifices to idols. And so the Israelites have a heritage, which the muslim arabs are not part of. shalom

  5. @ Nancy Davis… Anger on his face? ( I hope you'er not serious) Plague on the house of the president? And I thought the Klan was filled with hate. Can we stop the hate on this high holy day some who posted here are not considering that they themselves are filled with leven of sin and disrespect, If you must hate consider David who was respectful to King Saul even to the end of Sauls life. Consider Gods mercy on Nineveh, Israel during the days of Esther, Daniel and many others who found favor by not constantly finding a reason to attack their rulers. Adoni be Merciful to me. Shalom

  6. Mr. Blum I agree. Netanyahu and his voice The Jewish Press do a lot of Obama and US bashing, yet Bennie has his hand out. Support of Israeli does not mean I have to bow to the ultra-Orthodox/Likud view of the world and a Jewish State does not mean eradicating the Palestinians. Unfortunately for them their leadership has consistently back the losing side since the Grand Mufti aligned them with Nazi Germany. A two state solution is the only answer. Israelis and Palestinians will have to make those tough decisions themselves or neither will survive in the long run. Iran is quickly becoming a major power in the area because we destroyed Iraq and with the Shiite Majority it may well become a client state of Iran. Syria is next. Can Israel or Palestine stand up to a new Persian Empire without US support?

  7. Your article and relating President Obama a Victim of Racism/White Supremacy to Pharaoh is tacky, trashy and trifling. WE ALL KNOW that as a non-white person he is not in a position to oppress or subjugate a single one of those White "Jews" sitting at that Seder table or in the state of Israel. You all can be so damned TACKY.

  8. NO I don't notice that "Michelle and the children are not around" I notice they are not in THIS ONE PHOTO OF THE SEDER. Are you SUPPOSED to have FUN dipping your finger in the wine? I don't see anyone else turning flips while doing it and at last years SEDER not a single Jew in the house was acting like they were at a damned circus when dipping their fingers either. I am never surprised at the idiotic comments on these kinds of posts. I supposed tacky authors and their articles attract tacky people like yourself.

  9. The impersonation of Pharoah is accurate and telling. We know Pharoah retained his hard heart, despite the plagues that came upon his land. And when he sought to recapture those who God had freed, you saw what happened to Pharoah and his chariots.

  10. And Claire, how you have obviously hardened your heat to justify responding to rocks with bullets, to unarmed teenage marchers with tear gas, to rockets with f-14s and drones, to building fences through villages and through olive groves, and to destroying the possibility of a two state solution by settling vast parts of the other "state." But hey, I guess you're glad you're not Obama, I mean black.

  11. As a matter of fact you don't give Aid to Israel, as you are giving the non-refundable grants to its neighbours as Egypt and Jordan, but rather the US Government loan of 3 billion US$/year in total. Out of it 3 billions US$ there is 1,4 billions economic and 1,6 billions millitary aid where both ammounts are under conditions that we buy 80% out of it US originated parts, equipments, seeds etc…Or in another words you are crediting us to buy your domestic products-BY ALL MEANS!

  12. Its like putting rings on all of your fingers. the thumb, Israel. First finger- jordan, second- turkeu, third- egypt, fourth- syria…and as palestine is not a state; he just gives Jordan [as they are Jordanians] second helpings. So, giving more than four times as much to our enemies is complaining? We would rather none if you stop your moslem king from funding the moslem brotherhood who wants to destroy America even more than Israel.

  13. michelle. Exactly were any of his forefathers delivered by G-d through Moses whom He chose? then why the disrespect toward those Isaelites whose forefathers were delivered with a mighty hand out of Egypt and out from under Pharaoh's slavery.

  14. Michelle Loves Barack And yes Obama is a muslim, he certainly is not a christian as true christians do not support abortion or same sex marriages, which incidentally the Lord G-d of Israel has forbidden Leviticus 18 verse 22, so Obama is making a mockery of the seder.

  15. William A. McLaughlin yes they can because it is written, that G-d will bring up all nations against Israel, and He Himself will fight for them, No one can thwart the Lord G-d of Israel. remember the six day war, which was almost impossible for the Jewish people to win.

  16. michael, how can you have peace and two state solution, when it is the Arabs aim, to reclaim all the land and drive the Jews into the sea. they are surrounded by hostile Arabs, it was a mistake for them to give away the Gaza strip, and still the arabs arent about to make peace, now they want the west bank, Cant you see that the Isrealites have made the desert bloom, whereas Palestinians never did bestir themselves to work the land, So God has blessed them, and they should be left alone, have they not suffered enough during the holocaust? Arabs are lazy and greedy.

  17. Non-Jews have no business being at a Seder in the first place. It's not their story to take and use for their own agendas. It's like a white person telling the descendant of a black slave "Oh yeah, I know just how you feel!" Cultural appropriation is NEVER OK.

  18. Michael, I actually agree with you here (hey, there's a first time for everything!) The US should stop sending aid to Israel, and in return, Israel should be free to build anywhere she wants, defend herself as she sees fit, and basically put her two fingers up at anyone who tells her differently.

    Happy now?
