Firefighters Battle Fire in Jerusalem Forest

Tuesday, September 13th, 2016

Five Israeli firefighting companies spent the afternoon battling a blaze in the pine woods of the Jerusalem Forest on Tuesday, west of Jerusalem in the Judean Mountains.

According to Fire and Rescue authorities, the fire was judged to be of medium intensity and posed no immediate threat to nearby residents despite the windy conditions.

On Sunday, firefighters battled a much larger forest fire in the same area.

In order to extinguish that blaze, fire officials needed 10 firefighting teams on the ground, supported by six firefighting planes in the skies working together for hours against the flames.

Nearly two dozen people were evacuated from the Zippori Center guesthouse, located between Jerusalem’s Har Nof neighborhood and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial museum, due to the thick smoke.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters Get Control Over Jerusalem-Area Forest Fires Near Beit Shemesh, Givat HaMatos

Tuesday, June 7th, 2016

Firefighters were once again faced with flames in the forests around Jerusalem as the temperatures soared and dry air created a tinderbox among the trees.

A team of four firefighters managed to get control of a forest fire in Horesh, in the area of Givat HaMatos, according to local officials by around 2 pm Tuesday afternoon.

There was a serious concern the blaze would reach buildings located in the area; as a result, people living in nearby caravans temporarily evacuated their homes.

Likewise, a similar firefighting team of four was deployed to the forested hills surrounding the area near the southwestern Jerusalem suburb of Beit Shemesh.

The flames had reached an abandoned forest, but firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, said Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson Udi Gal.

No injuries were reported from either site.

Forest Fires Blazing in Jerusalem Hills and in Northern Israel

Thursday, May 26th, 2016

Residents around the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramot were asked to leave their homes on the Lag B’Omer holiday, during the day on Thursday (May 26) as a large forest fire broke out in the area.

Firefighters warned that the blaze could easily spread to their homes due to the high winds in the area, according to a statement by the Fire and Rescue service.

A fire also broke out in the area of Gush Tefen in northern Israel, forcing area officials to summon at least four fire and rescue teams to battle the blaze.

Less than 10 days ago, a large fire also broke out in a warehouse in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Givat Shaul.

The weather in Israel was warm but very dry and windy during the day, making it easy for any stray spark to ignite and erupt into a blazing fire.

Abu Ghosh Resident Charged with Arson

Tuesday, July 1st, 2014

A resident of the Israeli Arab village of Abu Ghosh has been indicted on charges of starting a forest fire in the area west of Jerusalem.

Abu Ghosh, friendly to Israelis for decades, is comprised mostly of Christian Arabs and is extremely popular both locally and abroad for its world-famous hummus.

Apparently one of its residents is not nearly as friendly to Israel, however. An indictment was filed in Jerusalem District Court on Tuesday against 19 year old Sa’id Abd al-Rahman, charging him with arson.

Rahman was accused of igniting a fire, using a lighter, last Sunday at a grove on HaTamar Street. He allegedly lit the blaze after a number of other fires were already burning in the area, according to the indictment.

Firefighters succeeded in extinguishing the blaze within 15 minutes – though not before half a dunam (1/8 acre) of forested land had already been destroyed.

The crime may indicate that Rahman intended to participate in an act of arson terror, a relatively new recent type of terrorism being perpetrated against Israeli by Palestinian Authority and Israeli Arabs especially in forested areas.
