Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko reported having a “great conversation” with the new president of the US last Friday, and reassured Sputnik-Belarus that Donald Trump is “not as stupid as people think.”

“He is no fool, as many people think,” Lukashenko explained. “I believe [his reputation] has to do with the [media’s reaction] when someone who isn’t part of the elite makes it to the top.”

“He is surrounded by a lot of smart people,” Lukashenko continued. “80% of them are Jews, and do not tell me that they are a stupid nation. It is not stupid when they prompt, talk and help.”

The President of Belarus said he talked to Trump about how to communicate with the Russian leadership. He also cautioned Sputnik-Belarus not to place too much hope on cooperation with Trump, stressing he is “first and foremost the president of the US.”

Lukashenko said that Trump had told him he was not planning to turn back globalization – despite his rhetoric of protectionism. Apparently Trump still he considers globalization “the trend for the ages.”

“We and the Russian people have to build our own lives, not look at America and Syria,” the Belarusian leader concluded.
