Jews Leaving France, Ukraine Generate 50% Increase in Aliyah

By: JTA

(JTA) — Jewish immigration to Israel during the first quarter of 2014 increased by 50 percent over the corresponding period last year, mainly due to arrivals from France and Ukraine.

In total, immigration to Israel under its Law of Return for Jews and their descendants during the first four months of 2014 increased by 50 percent over the first quarter of 2013, from 4,073 to 6,101, according to data compiled by the Jewish Agency for Israel ahead of its Board Of Governors meeting, which is scheduled to open on Sunday in Jerusalem.

The figures do not cover immigration from Ethiopia, which ended last year with the arrival of the last of the Falash Mura.

Nearly all of the increase, or 93 percent of the difference, comes from Western Europe and Ukraine.

Of the 2,652 new immigrants who immigrated to Israel, or made aliyah, from Western Europe in the first quarter of 2014, more than 80 percent were from France, where Jewish community leaders have warned of growing anti-Semitism.

The corresponding period last year brought to Israel only 789 new immigrants from that part of the world, of whom 58 percent were French.

In Ukraine, where the government was toppled this year in a revolution that sparked an armed territorial dispute with Russia and Russian-backed separatists, the Jewish Agency was responsible for bringing to Israel a total of 1,107 Jews during the months January-April this year, compared to only 592 new immigrants during those months last year.

Immigration from other parts of the former Soviet Union increased by 10 percent over the first quarter of 2014, bringing a total of 1,642 new immigrants.

Immigration from North America during the first quarter of 2014 increased to 621, an 18-percent rise over the 525 who came during the months January-April of 2013.

  1. Elyse Dorm says:

If they make the muslims leave then they will have plenty of room for the Jews in Israel.

  2. Kenneth Schreier says:

Yes indeed, the Jews are continuing to be gathered from the four corners of the earth to Israel. This is wonderful event as the nations continue to oppress the Jews. Hashem's word continues to ring true as stated. They will be ingathered from the distance corners of the earth and returned to their land. Judgement Day for the nations is approaching. G-d keeps His promise to his people and the nations will face ruin for 1000s of years of oppression. They have not repented and continue to disbelieve in G-d and His prophets. They have indeed reaped their own ruin! Amen

  3. Ronny Mol says:

It is very SAD that French and Ukrainian Jews have to make aliyah as a last resort, how MUCH BETTER TO MAKE ALIYAH BECAUSE IT IS the homeland of the Jewish people. European Jews NEED to get out ASAP but how can a family of 12 leave. Where is the money to help them make aliyah? I suggest taking a city approach. Get the city's Jews out and sell the Jewish communal property to support that city's Jewish absorption to Israel.

  4. Kenneth Schreier says:

There is plenty of space in Israel for the entire world's population of some 16 to 18 million. No problem as it is Hashem who brings them from the four corners of the earth!
He will indeed make the land prosper more as more and more Jews return.

  5. I wish even those in America, EU countries, elsewhere could come back home and join their people of their roots. By doing that they boost their economy in Israel, show true love to your roots. I pray for this to happen very soon. It is painful to leave all that you have earned but you will be truly free at heart You will have the true joy of life!!!
