It’s On: Israeli Universities Petition High Court Against Ariel University

Left-wing activists reveal the real reason why they, like their professors, want Ariel Dead. Their signs say (right to left): "Ariel is not Israel," "University for Occupation Sciences," and "Don't let the Settler's State take over the State of Israel."

What’s great about the following story is that it shows how diverse academic institutions can act together to achieve a common goal. In the end, when the need arises, differences are dropped and a rare unity can be achieved. If these same institutions collaborated this way on other issues, who knows, we could have an Israeli mission to Mars, if not farther away.
The only downside is that these exulted academic institutions are working in concert to decimate another academic institution, for its original sin of standing close to ten miles east of the “green line,” or the armistice line, where the Jordanian Legion and the IDF interrupted the hostilities in 1949.
Now the fight against the recognition of Ariel University Center as a full-fledged academic institution comes to the High Court: the Hebrew University, the Technion, Tel Aviv University, the Weizmann Institute, Bar Ilan University (way to go, frum brethren), Haifa University, Ben Gurion University and the Open University have filed a petition to nullify the decision to establish a university in Ariel.
The petition was filed against a long list of plaintiffs: the Council for Higher Education in Judea and Samaria, the IDF command in Judea and Samaria, the Israeli government, the Minister of Defense, Minister of Finance, Minister of Education, the Council for Higher Education (CHE), Planning and Budgeting Committee (PBC) and the Ariel University Center in Samaria.
The petition claims that the decision to recognize the University Center as a university is rife with defects and exceeds the authority of the Council for Higher Education in Judea and Samaria. It also claims that the decision is “extremely unreasonable and unacceptable.”
But read the signs carried recently by left-wing Ariel haters, seen in the image above. They tell the real story, with messages like: “Ariel is not Israel,” “University for Occupation Sciences,” and “Don’t let the Settler’s State take over the State of Israel.”
According to the petitioners, there is no need to establish a Hebrew-speaking university in Judea and Samaria, since only 15% of the students are residents of the area.
Yes, it must be the Hebrew.
Just take a look at the number of universities in Judea and Samaria, and the list does not include colleges and other higher education institutions:

Have you heard anything said, ever, about the legitimacy of these institutions? Do you know why? Because they don’t teach in Hebrew. It’s the Hebrew thing, every time.
If only the founders of that hated institution had the sense to call it Arial Madrassa…

The university heads who submitted this petition should be removed from their posts, fired, every single one of them. Enough is enough. Our universities are just chock full of cranks, left-wing extremists & lunatics, anti-Semites (yes, Jewish anti-Semites exist). And, our tax money pays their salaries, that just burns me up. These people spread slander & lies against Israel, they promote boycotts against Israel, & they are infecting our youth with propaganda & lies.
You'd think that a right-wing majority government would be able to get at least some of your proposed program going. How do you explain the fact that it doesn't?
I don't know what gives you the idea that we have a ''right-wing'' gov't. coalition. The Likud is very much a Centrist party. Calling the current gov't. ''right-wing'' is just the usual propaganda from the hysterical Left, a sort of demonization, if you will.
Having said that, our politicians are pretty spineless, the gov't. is scared to death of a major media campaign, complete with charges of ''McCarthyism'', the end of democracy, we're becoming just like Iran, free speech, blah, blah, blah ad nauseum.
By the way, the universities in America are not much better, you have plenty of cranks & loonies & your politicians never do anything about it either.

It's deeper than you may think. The map is divided into people who are interested in views different than their own and ideologues who are in an echo chamber with their ilk.
Reasonable people of good faith can disagree but this must be based on facts, evidence, some degree of common sense. You go where the evidence leads, make an effort to be informed. You go to a number of sources & weigh the evidence.
Sadly, the Left cares nothing about evidence or facts. As you say, an echo chamber ….
Oh, I think both left and right have long ago given up the will to hear other people's views. Remember the Republican debate where the audience booed a Marine who said he was gay? The Tea Party in many cases encourages the Knownothing attitude, and on the left they lose their sanity equally easily.
I wish "right wing" in the US were like the Likud. Under its rule, Israel has better (and universal) health care, more and better regulation of the financial sector, higher taxes on the wealthy, better public transit, lower university tuition, a more generous welfare system — and no attempt suppression of the votes of ethnic minorities. Not to mention a faster growing economy and lower unemployment.

As for the Tea Party, they are primarily fiscal conservatives & believe in the US constitution, they are not racist or anti-gay, they just don't want America to go bankrupt. Charlie Hall The Likud is certainly rhetorically right-wing & free enterprise but they like Big Gov't. – like all Israeli political parties, they're still a bunch of Bolsheviks. They have made some baby steps to limit somewhat the serious problem of economic concentration, a relic of our failed socialist past.
Terry — The ability of employees to negotiate as a group empowers them and works best for the economy, too. The decimation of U.S. unions has resulted, among other things, in exporting our industrial base and impoverishing our lower middle class.
Here, in Israel, a socialized medical program works in stellar fashion. My wife just had a series of space-age operations on her spine, with amazing results — she's walking almost pain-free, for 7 shekels. That's SEVEN SHEKELS, less than $2.
There are magnificent components of Socialism that improve people's lives without compare. There are also components which encourage corruption — exactly the way it is in Capitalism.
We shouldn't be blind ideologues, but take what's best in both schools of thought. Israel has shown great examples of this approach. Take the control over the banks — there are no derivatives in Israel. They're illegal. That's why Israel snapped out of the 2008 crisis relatively unscathes. The U.S. economy is yet to recover from the hands-off approach to controls.

Unions are a 19th century solution to 21st century problems. Are you trying to tell me that the Histadrut is good for Israel's economy? C'mon, that's a bad joke. Just take a look at our electric company, that mismanaged disaster of a company. And, public sector unions are bankrupting the municipalities all over America. Look what unions did to General Motors, good grief.
Jobs are not leaving America because of the decimation of industrial unions, that's baloney. The US is losing jobs because of a poor investment environment, over-regulation, high taxation. It's not even high labour costs since productivity is more important than wages.
Your wife's operations did not cost 7 shekels. We pay taxes to subsidize medical costs. The system is very bureaucratic & many people take out supplemental private insurance. I'll certainly admit, however, that the system works far better than health care in the US which is fast becoming a nightmare.
I'm not a blind ideologue, I only look at results, at outcomes. When Israel was dominated by Socialists, we were a poverty-stricken Third-World basket case.
Had Israel had free market policies in the 1950s, huge numbers of olim would have starved to death.
Terry Brodsky You are wrong on so many levels. It was pension costs more than anything else that killed GM. Had they done the irresponsible thing they could have defunded their pension plan, dumped the liabilities on the government, and done quite well. That would have cost the government far more money!
Another contributor to GM's problems was that all the Japanese automakers received huge subsidies from state governments to build plants in the US. It is hard to compete against a state-subsidized industry. Many of the Republicans who opposed the GM bailout were from states that had given those subsidies.
The non-union workers at the Japanese plants make about the same as the union workers at the American automakers, but American salaries for corporate executives are far higher. American tax rates on individuals are lower than in any other free country — and much lower than in Israel. It was the LACK of regulation that caused the crash of 2008, a crash that did not affect Israel thanks to its regulation, a level of regulation that even the Democrats in the US don't dare propose. America can learn much from Israel!
Worthy of note is that GM's pension plan was fully funded as of summer 2008.
Partially, it was indeed pension costs but GM has been losing market share since the 1970's. The bail-out did nothing – look at their share price today. American corporate taxes are very high actually.
Israel has exhorbitant taxes plus a very high cost of living & low salaries – due to excessive economic concentration, monopolies & semi-monopolies, high import duties & quotas, lack of competition, low productivity, & monstrous unaccountable bureaucracies – all the residual effects of our socialist past. Our banks, by the way, rob us blind, give credit to cronies (our oligarchs) which is very risky, they are very inefficient & over-staffed, & they have the most bizarre opening hours.

The protesting lefty students, who think they are being virtuous, are really pawns of their university's administration, whose REAL motive is not political but financial. Another university competes with them for government funds. Each new university in Israel has been opposed by the existing universities for the same reason.
Oh, it's also ideological – they want a monopoly on ideology. The universities are one of the last bastions of Leftism in Israel. I'm not discounting your opinion, it's absolutely true that it's also financial, amazing as it sounds, Leftists just love money, they're parasites with an immense sense of entitlement.

That actually IS an issue, as Ariel has not been annexed by Medinat Yisrael. Nevertheless it IS possible for a government to run a university campus beyond its borders; for example the University of Maryland has locations all over the world:
