Jasser noted in a commentary online Tuesday that although el-Sisi called on Muslim clerics to combat extremism in Islam, “he never uses the word freedom, never uses the word liberty.” What is needed, he said, is for Muslim leaders in places like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to “declare a separation between mosque and state… When I hear a Muslim leader say that, then I will take a second look that they’re real about it,” Jasser said.
