Mass. Transit Authority To Restore Ads Critical of Israel

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said it was restoring dozens of ads critical of Israel to its transit system that had been taken down following public complaints.

The transit system said the 80 ads would be put back in the Greater Boston area and that there had been a “miscommunication” with its advertising contractor Titan, according to the Boston Globe. The ads, which went up on Oct. 21, were removed several days later by Titan following the complaints.

“There was a breakdown in our established procedures for handling complaints about specific ads,” according to a transit authority spokesperson.

The ads are comprised of four maps that show what is called “Palestinian loss of land – 1946-2010.” A message alongside the maps reads “4.7 million Palestinians are Classified by the UN as Refugees.” Connecticut resident Henry Clifford, chairman of the Committee for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine, paid for the $40,000 campaign.

Geller Submits Anti-Islamist Ads to MTA Rebutting Hate Israel Ads

The American Freedom Defense Initiative, the group that brought you subway ads equating Muslims to savages, is hoping to install yet another round of anti-Islamist posters, this time at Metro-North stations.

Pamela Geller, NYC’s most outspoken Islamophobe and executive director of the AFDI, submitted the ads to the MTA Tuesday.

Geller’s ads are in response to a pro-Palestinian campaign by American Muslims for Palestine, which hit Metro-North stations on Monday, the first day of Passover.

The posters use a quote from Nobel Peace Prize recipient Desmond Tutu comparing Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians to apartheid in South Africa.

The new campaign will feature the headline: “This is Islamic apartheid” above disturbing images, including one with two blindfolded men about to be hanged with nooses.

The caption below reads: “Gay under Islamic law (Sharia).”

Due to a previous court ruling that required the agency to post Geller’s other anti-Muslim ads, the new posters are expected to be approved.

The MTA, however, will likely include a prominent disclaimer on the ads that reads, “This is a paid advertisement sponsored by the American Freedom Defense Initiative. The display of this advertisement does not imply MTA’s endorsement of any views expressed.”

Geller wrote of the ads in a blog post:

This anti-Israel ad is exactly the technique that Hitler’s minions used. If you read the writings of Goebbels, the Nazi narrative was that they were the victims. They were the put-upon ones. That’s how they sold annihilation. And this is the same thing. It’s not surprising that Islamic supremacists would appropriate the propaganda methods of the Third Reich, as they partnered with Hitler and shared the same goal.

 

Train Posters Citing Tutu, Urging End to US Aid to Israel

A display of fairly insulting posters along the platforms at 25 Metro-North train stations went up this week, calling for an end to “apartheid” by stopping U.S. aid to Israel, WABC News reported.

If you stayed home for Passover, you were spared these unsightly messages – but they’ll be there tomorrow morning, on your way to work, if you travel from suburban New York and Connecticut,.

A group called American Muslims for Palestine paid for the billboards, which are displayed at 25 Metro-North stations. But the true force behind the latest effort to soil Israel’s name is—you guessed it—all Jewish.

“The campaign against U.S. aid for Israel targets neither Jews nor Passover, but rather Israeli apartheid and injustice. And the best way to honor Passover, which celebrates Jewish liberation from ancient oppression, is to champion Palestinian human rights today,” said Michael Letwin of Jews for Palestinian Right of Return, who spoke at Tuesday’s launch of the billboards at the Metro North Harlem station.

Naturally, they posted them in Harlem, where the big decisions about U.S. aid are made.

The ads call for the end of U.S. aid to Israel and call the treatment of Palestinians in the disputed territories “apartheid.”

A quote from Bishop Desmond Tutu is featured at the top of the billboard, where he says how distressed he has been since his visit to the Holy Land.

You can read the full article (Apartheid in the Holy Land), it truly comes across as the ramblings of a tired old man, regurgitating the cliches he has been fed, combining them with familiar resentments: “And how did it come about that Israel was collaborating with the apartheid government on security measures?” he wonders, betraying the sad fact that the realities of an embattled Israel in the early 1970s are still his measure of today’s realities.

There are no suicide bombers in Tutu’s view of history, no Jewish graves, no massacred families, only suffering Palestinians. He condemns Israel’s action in Judea and Samaria, following the massacre of the Park Hotel in Netanya on the seder night, April, 2002. Tutu writes: “The military action of recent days, I predict with certainty, will not provide the security and peace Israelis want; it will only intensify the hatred.”

Wrong. In 2002 the IDF, once and for all, broke down the terrorist infrastructure and either killed or threw most of the thugs in jail. What followed was a period of growing prosperity for Judea and Samaria Arabs, and a tight hold of the IDF on Arab terrorism.

The good bishop would have had Israel just lie there and turn the other cheek. In that he follows a long tradition of church leaders.

Antisemitism is such an ever shifting thing. They used to call for our heads because we were racially impure, now it turns out we’re the new racists.

The ads feature a disclaimer by the MTA stating the agency does not endorse the views expressed. That’s when the ads are in favor of killing Jews (or leaving them defenseless so someone else would do the killing). In cases when Jews try to fight back with their own, anti-Jihadist ads, as in the case of Pamela Geller, the same MTA fights them tooth and nail.

After Drawn Out Battle, Chicago Transit Allows Anti-Jihad Ads

It took months and plenty of sturm and drang, but the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) finally caved and accepted our #myjihad ads. It is disturbing that a government agency is working hand in hand with a Hamas group, but that is indeed the low state of the world at this point in the war.

Here is the white flag. Look at how the city of Chicago calls our defense of freedom, of minorities, women and children, Jews, Christians, and Hindus racist, intolerant and “hatred.” They have the indecency to call us “morally reprehensible.” Oh, the irony. They are morally reprehensible for denying us our First Amendment rights. They are morally reprehensible for carrying water for the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. They are morally reprehensible for abandoning religious minorites, women and children living under the boot of the most oppressive and extreme ideology on the face of the earth.

Our ads are like the silver cross to their Dracula. And the jihad-aligned media can’t get enough of the Muslim Brotherhood lie. Lawsuit forces Chicago to accept anti-jihad bus ads Neil Munro

The Chicago Transit Authority has agreed to display plain-spoken anti-jihad ads on city buses, following a lawsuit by the American Freedom Law Center.

City officials initially rejected the American Freedom Defense Initiative’s anti-jihad ads, even after the city accepted bus ads that touted a sanitized portrayal of jihad as exercise and education rather than warfare.

The center’s anti-jihad ads are “morally reprehensible — advocating racism, hatred and intolerance of cultural diversity,” said a Feb. 4 letter from Karen Seimetz, the general counsel of the city’s bus authority.

Rep. Maloney Presses Feds for Generators to Help Pump Out East River Subway Tunnels

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan/Queens), spoke with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Ray LaHood today seeking urgent Federal disaster aid for the efforts of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to pump out tunnels under the East River.

“The power is out in the East River subway tunnels, and Con Ed and the MTA cannot predict when power will be restored. Portable generators are needed to power the pumps to empty the tunnels, and that’s what I’ve asked from both DOT Secretary LaHood and Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Fugate,” said Maloney.

“New York City took an enormous hit from this storm and our thoughts and prayers are with all who have been affected by this disaster. I am deeply grateful to all the first responders who braved the elements to help those in need— and to the workers now in the field working to restore normal conditions.

“The storm’s combination of wind and flooding caused the largest storm-related outage in Con Ed history and the worst conditions ever in the 108-year history of the New York subway system.

“Recovery efforts are now underway but it is going to take a significant period of time to repair this much damage. I will do everything I can to ensure that all available Federal assistance is forthcoming.”

Following their conversation, Congresswoman Maloney sent the following letter to Secretary LaHood:

Dear Secretary LaHood,

Thank you for speaking with me earlier today about providing emergency federal assistance from the Department of Transportation to the MTA to help deal with record flooding in the New York City subway system. Providing this emergency federal disaster funding will greatly aid in the recovery process, by covering the costs of generators needed to address flooding in the subway system, as well as other immediate needs.

As you know, the subway tunnels going under the East River serving, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx are totally flooded. MTA can’t ascertain damage or time it will take to repair until the tunnels are pumped out, but they can’t be pumped out because there is no power for pumps from Con Ed.

Sandy inflicted widespread and significant damage to our country’s largest transit system and I deeply appreciate your assistance as we recover from this disaster.

MTA Sneaks In Free Speech Restrictions, Bypassing Court Ruling Favoring Anti-Jihad Ad

In what many, including legal scholar Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz, call “unconstitutional” restrictions on free speech, the board of the New York City Transportation Authority unanimously passed a new set of regulations governing the kinds of advertisements it will accept. The MTA is now empowered to ban any ad the  MTA

reasonably foresees would imminently incite or provoke violence or other immediate breach of the peace.

The new regulations also require disclaimers to be included in any political, religious or morality-based ads, stating  that they do not represent the views of the MTA.

These new regulations were announced on Thursday, September 27, just three days after the American Freedom Defense Initiative ads were put up after a lengthy and costly court battle brought by AFDI and its executive and associate directors, Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, to enforce their First Amendment right to free speech.  That ad appears in 10 subway stations in the New York subway system.  It reads, “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man.  Support Israel.  Defeat Jihad.”

The spokesman for the MTA, Aaron Donovan, admitted to a reporter from The Blaze that the changes came in response to AFDI’s anti-Jihad ads and the ensuing litigation.

Initial reports were that commuters were passing by the ads without any noticeable responses, but apparently there were complaints that instilled fear in MTA board members.

There was at least one widely publicized attack against the ad, engaged in by Egyptian-American activist Mona Eltahawy. That attack was motivated by the woman, who has only been a U.S. citizen for one year.  Eltahawy claimed that her acts of criminal vandalism, which were caught on videotape by The New York Post, were legitimate acts of free speech and non-violent protest.

Eltahawy was arrested and charged with various offenses.  When she was released from prison the next day, Eltahawy was critical of her time in jail.  However, Eltahawy  neglected to mention that when she was detained by Egyptian police during the Arab Spring uprisings, her arm and her wrist were broken and she claimed the police repeatedly physically and sexually assaulted her.

The newly-elected Egyptian president, former Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Morsi, instructed the Egyptian Consul General, Zousef Zada, to monitor Eltahawy’s case.

The New York Times reported on the new restrictions, without any comment regarding the potentially unconstitutional regulations.

Instead, the venerable leader against the assault on the First Amendment – The New York Times - merely reported the outlandish statements made at a press conference announcing the changes, by the MTA chairman, Joseph J. Lhota.   “We’ve gotten to the point where we needed to take action today,” Lhota said, in what must have been a reference to anger directed at the anti-Jihad ads, “You deal with a free speech issue with more free speech.”   Like Eltahawy, Lhota appears to believe that free speech includes official action taken to restrict free speech.

The MTA may hope it has avoided a First Amendment challenge because its restriction is “viewpoint neutral.” This is because the new regulation does not overtly single out any special group or groups for special treatment, which was the fatal flaw pointed out by Judge Englemayer in his July 20 ruling which forced the MTA to finally post them, after a year-long delay caused by their rejection of that ad on grounds determined to be unconstitutional.

The new restriction is sure to inspire potent legal challenges on other constitutional grounds.  For example, can one “reasonably foresee” what kind of ad will “incite violence” or a “breach of the peace”?  A legal challenge on numerous grounds should be anticipated, as predicted by Dershowitz in an interview with The Algemeinerin which he referred to the new rules as not only “unconstitutional,” but also “plain dumb.”

And to argue that ads, such as the anti-Jihad ones, will incite violence, whereas the pro-Israel ones would not, because they did not, might lead to an argument underscoring the point of Geller’s ads. That ads perceived by Muslims, to be anti-Muslim, such that they justify violence, could conceivably be used to prove that Muslims are unable to tolerate First Amendment norms in the same way as do other ethnic groups.  And that argument itself might, under this theory, incite violence.

The MTA’s ‘Demeaning’ Double Standard

It took a federal judge to get New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority to allow ads to run on buses calling for support of Israel against terrorist attacks. Though a year ago the MTA accepted an ad sponsored by an anti-Israel group calling for an end to military aid to Israel, it initially refused to permit display of an ad sponsored by a pro-Israel group that read, “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man./ Support Israel/Defeat Jihad.”

The MTA rejected the ad, finding that it violated one of the MTA’s written advertising standards that prohibits ads with “information that demean[s] an individual or group of individuals on account of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, gender, age disability or sexual orientation.”

The MTA’s refusal to permit the ad led to a lawsuit brought by the sponsoring group, the American Freedom Defense Initiative, claiming a violation of its right to free speech.

An MTA official, Jeffrey Rosen, told the judge that the MTA’s decision was based on its position that the ad used the words “savage” and “Jihad” to identify those who fail to support Israel and this “demeans a group (or groups) of individuals on account of their religion, national origin, or ancestry, including Palestinians or other Arabs or Muslims who do not share AFDI’s views on Israel.”

Though the judge held that the references were reasonably understood to mean Muslims and Arabs, he nonetheless held that the MTA’s “demeaning” standard was too loose and provided no objective guidance as to what was permissible and what was not and allowed the MTA to pick and choose the kind of speech it would allow.

He went on to give examples of ads that were allowed in the past which were clearly uncomplimentary to individuals and groups. This state of affairs was incompatible with the constitutional notion that government may not censor speech, he said.

Those who chafe at the high-handed way New York City officials often take positions in the exercise of their official duties that go out of their way to accommodate and identify with Muslim and Arab sensitivities, should certainly welcome this decision.

Actually, in the light of the recent anti-American rioting in Benghazi, Cairo, Tunis and other Muslim/Arab venues, all Americans should welcome anything that militates against the notion of granting the slightest legitimacy to those outrages and the people who perpetrate them.
