Twitter announced on Sunday that it permanently banned the personal account of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) for tweets that repeatedly violated Twitter’s COVID-19 misinformation policy. Twitter suspended Greene’s account after she tweeted on Saturday about “extremely high amounts of Covid vaccine deaths” and included a misleading chart that pulled information from a government database of unverified raw data, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, which collects self-reported cases from patients and healthcare providers.
According to Twitter, this was the congresswoman’s fifth strike, following a fourth strike she received in August for falsely posting that the vaccines were “failing.” Twitter issued her a third strike in July after she had tweeted that Covid-19 was not dangerous and that vaccines should not be mandated. A fifth strike means Greene’s account will never be restored. But her official Congressional account, @RepMTG, remains active since her messages on it have not violated Twitter’s policy.
Rep. Greene posted on Telegram: “The Silicon Valley Cartel finally pulled the trigger. . .Twitter permanently banned my account! They fear me SPEAKING THE TRUTH. I’m exposing the DC swamp’s lies, corruption & fraud. I have big plans to fight back but can’t do it without you. Will you stand with me? Sign your petition >>>
Last January, Twitter temporarily shut down Greene’s account for attacking a state election official over voter fraud allegations. Twitter and other social media platforms have banned former President Donald Trump for life after the attack on the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
On July 14, Greene apologized for comparing the US government’s vaccine rules to the Holocaust and stated that “there is no comparison” between the safety measures and the genocide of 6 million Jews during World War II.
“You know, we can look back in a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star and they were definitely treated like second-class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany, and this is exactly the type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about,” Greene said on Real America’s Voice. She then responded to a news report about a Tennessee grocery store that required employees to display vaccination logos on their name badges, tweeting, “Vaccinated employees get a vaccination logo just like the Nazis forced Jewish people to wear a gold star.”
Greene apologized after a visit to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and after incessant condemnation from fellow Republicans. “I have made a mistake. I wanted to say that I know that words that I’ve stated were hurtful, and for that, I am very sorry,” Greene told reporters.
Twitter spokeswoman Katie Rosborough said on Sunday: “We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy.”
