Anti-Semitic Thugs Attack Stamford Hill Synagogue, Worshipers in London

Sunday, March 22nd, 2015

A gang of around 20 young men in the Stamford Hill section of London stormed a synagogue in the neighborhood late Saturday night. The gang yelled obscenities and threats, beat worshipers and vandalized property according to IsraelHatzolah’s official Twitter account.

British police told media in a curt statement they were treating the incident as an anti-Semitic incident due to “a remark” made by one of a group of drunken men who tried to break into the synagogue after leaving a nearby party just after 1 am local time. Six were arrested, police confirmed, on charges of assault and disturbing public order.

The police statement hardly describes the siege that was underway before help arrived.

One member of the Ahavat Torah congregation who witnessed the attack said the mob shouted “We will kill you!” He also said they physically assaulted the worshipers inside the synagogue and tore apart prayer books.

One Jewish man was beaten about the face and had a tooth knocked out after he tried to apprehend one of the attackers on his own and haul him off to police, having spotted the scene while passing by.

Police said they have increased patrols in the area to provide reassurance to the community – but if so, none were around when this attack took place.

A new Campaign Against Anti-Semitism hotline is about to be launched in response to the sharp rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Britain over the past two years. Prime Minister David Cameron was the keynote speaker at the annual dinner for the nation’s Community Security Trust (CST) last week. The organization monitors anti-Semitic activity in the country. In his speech, Cameron announced a series of financial measures totaling more than 11 million British pounds Sterling to support Jewish community security across the country.

“At a time when once again the Jewish communities of Europe feel vulnerable and when anti-Semitism is at record levels here in Britain I will not stand idly by,” Cameron vowed. “I will not turn a blind eye to the threats that the community faces. If the Jewish community does not feel secure then our whole national fabric is diminished… We are going to fight anti-Semitism with everything we have got,” he promised.

Anti-Semitism More Than Doubles in UK, Figures Show

Monday, February 9th, 2015

Anti-Semitism in the United Kingdom has more than doubled over the past year, according to figures gathered by the Community Security Trust. (CST)

When the incidents were broken down by category, the highest spike was seen in abusive behavior, which nearly tripled since 2004, but which more than doubled from 2013 to 2014 – a total of 884 incidents last year alone.

In fact, incidents of damage and desecration nearly doubled; the number of assaults were up by 25 percent and the number of threats (92) increased by 142 percent. The highest spike was in anti-Semitic literature, which was six times higher in 2014 than in 2013.

The greatest rise in incidents recorded by the CST in its annual report occurred in London (583) and Manchester (309) in northern England. Included were 81 violent assaults. One case involved a baseball bat and a glass.

Odd, and sad: in 2013, the same organization recorded its lowest number of anti-Semitic incidents for eight years commented David Conn, a commentator for The Guardian.

Home Secretary (interior minister) Theresa May called the statistics “deeply concerning,” according to Reuters.

Prime Minister David Cameron had already told parliament last Wednesday, “We need to do everything we can to help this community feel safe and secure in our country… I would hate it for British Jews not to feel that they have a home here in Britain – safe, secure and a vital part of our community.”

Really? Seriously? How perfectly splendid. But perhaps Cameron should give this a teensy bit more consideration: after all, even his fellow MP Ed Miliband is being targeted. Where does it end?

British MP Ed Miliband is not excluded from being targeted on Twitter by local anti-Semites, regardless of his liberal views. This post was uploaded quite recently.

It is no surprise to any thinking individual that a survey last month found that 25 percent of Britain’s Jews have spent the past two years mulling the prospect of leaving the UK for good. The survey, conducted online by the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, found that 56 percent of Jewish people in the UK believe anti-Semitism now “echoes the 1930s.” More to the point, 58 percent said they believe Jews have “no long-term future in Europe.”

Holocaust denial is not unusual among anti-Semites although some validate the genocide and in fact praise it, saying Hitler "didn't finish the job." In the case of this post to Twitter from the UK, it was the former.

As a matter of fact, students at a small Jewish elementary school in London were drilled on how to respond in case of a terror attack.

Perhaps that’s not a bad idea. Last week a far-right neo-Nazi group announced plans to hold a march under the banner, “Liberate Stamford Hill” next month to protest “Jewification of Great Britain.” Stamford Hill is an area of London that is home to the highest concentration of Orthodox Jews in the country.

The group, which also calls itself “Liberate Stamford Hill” has planned its rally for March 22 at 2pm local time in the Stamford Hill district. For obvious reasons, the CST has expressed concern.

British ‘Jewish Police’ Force to Protect Mosques

Tuesday, June 25th, 2013

The “Shomrim” Haredi police uniformed police force in London has offered to protect mosques in the Hackney district following violent attacks on local mosques, the British edition of Huffington Post reported.

The Shomrim regularly patrol the heavily Jewish populated area of Stamford Hills and often detain suspects until police arrive. The group’s origins are in New York, where the Shomrim organized after being tired of long response times of the local men in blue.

Muslim leaders met with Shomrim officials in a London area mosque  to discuss mutual cooperation, promoted by Hackney councilor Ian Sharer, an orthodox Jew who helped found the Muslim-Jewish forum.

“In our ward, the three councilors are two Haredi Jews, and one religious Muslim. We have been friends for many years, and we get on every well,” he told Huffington. “This is a very serious situation, and so I thought, why not call my friends from Shomrim?”

The Muslims welcomed the  offer and now have the Shomrim phone number to call if there is trouble.

Recent Muslim attacks have included arson on a community center and a homemade explosive device that was found at a mosque.

Rabbi Drowns During Ritual Dipping in the Ocean in Wales

Monday, August 6th, 2012

The Daily Mail reported that Stamford Hill, London-based Orthodox Rabbi Dov Berish Englander, 47, on holiday at the scenic seaside town of Aberystwyth in West Wales, “got into difficulties” while performing a full body ritual immersion.

Last Thursday, Rabbi Englander walked into the ocean for an early morning ritual bath. A guest at a hotel overlooking the bay rang 999 after seeing him struggling to stay afloat. A lifeboat and rescue helicopter were sent to the scene and the lifeboat crew pulled the drowning rabbi from the water.

Despite the efforts of paramedics to resuscitate Rabbi Englander, he was declared dead at Bronglais General Hospital, Aberystwyth.

Rabbi Englander was greatly respected for his scholarship and charitable work.

The seaside resort of Aberystwyth is a popular destination for Haredi families.

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

In June, Satmar Chasid Rabbi Chaim Breisch died after struggling in a rough sea off Broadstairs, Kent.
