"The zigzaggy conduct of Naftali Bennet is classic opportunism, and the public will judge him for it, his plan is nothing but empty spin,” said on Monday Minister Daniel Hershkowitz, head of the "Jewish Home" Knesset faction. Hershkowitz was referring to the candidacy of MKs Zevulun Arlov and Naftali Bennet, and quoted an opinion piece published last weekend by Mekor Rishon's pundit Sofia Ron-Moria, where she quipped that she "won’t buy a used car from Bennet or Orlov."

The Israel Defense Forces on Sunday began a week-long drill of a text-message warning system that sends alerts to cellphones about imminent missile attacks in particular areas. Egyptian president Morsi made several sweeping decisions on Sunday afternoon, announced by the presidential spokesperson in a televised statement. Al Ahram reported that, to start, Morsi cancelled the addendum to the constitutional declaration, issued by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) on June 17. The addendum stipulated that the head of the SCAF, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, was to remain minister of defense until a new constitution was drafted. Not any more.

A combat soldier in the Kfir Infantry Brigade, Sgt. Lee Rosenthal, is also one of the best bridge players worldwide. Just last week the Israeli bridge team placed second in the world bridge championship for competitors under the age 21 held in Taicang, China a week ago. The skillful players overcame teams from China, Italy and dozens of other countries, defeated only by the Dutch team by a single point. Among the team members are two IDF soldiers, completing their full service.

In its war against the West and Israel, Iran has apparently given up its attempt to portray itself as being unaffected by the sanctions against its economy and, taking a page out of the Palestinian playbook, is now switching to the opposite approach, pushing the suffering of individual Iranians under the cruel sanctions. Of course, for all that to change practically overnight, all Tehran has to do is stop its nuclear project and open up its facilities to international inspectors.

Two strong earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday, killing 153 people and injuring more than 1,300, with many buildings being reduced to rubble, according to Iranian officials. Thousands are fleeing their homes and staying outdoors, fearing more damage from aftershocks – at least 20 of which have hit the region.
