The Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel voted to provide emergency aid to the Jewish community of Greece, to help it address immediate needs in the wake of their country's terrible financial crisis. The $1 million will be spread over two years and help Greek Jewish institutions from going under. That amount will be just $250,000 short each year of the income of JAFI's top earner, Dr. Misha Galperin.

Burhan Ghalioun, head of the Syrian National Council indicated that - despite the blood of over 7000 Syrian citizens on the hands of Hizbollah's patron Assad - political expedience alone will dictate its policy: "There are no permanent enmities in politics as there are no permanent friendships. Alliances are built on goals. We want to achieve our goals."

He also thinks "somebody" is plotting an Obama assassination.

The 9th president of the Supreme Court of Israel, Beinisch presided over an active term, in which she wrote landmark decisions like the 2005 ruling against the IDF’s use of “human shields,” the 2007 ruling that Israel's separation fence route must be modified, and the 2009 ruling declaring private prisons unconstitutional. But the most memorable ruling of her legacy may be her penultimate one – the High Court's revocation of the Tal Law.

Many of the participants in an emergency conference last night were adamant on the need to “give up our lives” over the preservation of Torah study, in face of a growing public push for Haredi military service. In the Israeli marketplace of ideas, two views competed this morning: "Don't push them too fast, or you'll get nothing but conflict" – versus "It's time for everybody to carry their fair share of the load." Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman was on the money when he accused retired Supreme Court President Beinisch of committing a hit-and-run…

Recent comments by Media Matters' Senior Foreign Policy Fellow MJ Rosenberg are the most recent incarnation of the age-old accusation against Jews of disloyalty to their own country. It finds its roots in the Biblical villains Pharaoh and Hamen who accused the Jews of Egypt and Persia of disloyalty. It was a central tenet of Nazism, Stalinism and other anti-Semitic regimes. Today, it is the mantra of David Duke, Patrick Buchanan, Reverend Jeremiah Wright and Jew haters of every race, religion and national origin.

In pre-Oscar television interviews, actors Shlomo Bar-Aba and Lior Ashkenazi, stars of the Israeli Oscar nominated "Footnote," which last night became the tenth Israeli nominee to not win the big prize – were telling anyone who would listen that it was definitely going to be Iran this year. And they were right. The Hollywood elite which decides these things gave the nod to Iran's "A Separation," from what we hear a fantastic family drama, and Director Asghar Farhadi has taken home the Oscar for best foreign language film. While Director Joseph Cedar, an observant Jew, went home empty handed for the second time in his career. Bummer.
